Since that thread was so long, and my message would probably never get reached and read, I decided to make this new thread.I would like to know just one question. How do you know only seven civs will be availably per game? |

We have heard two numbers, 7 and 8. 7 means you + 6 + barbarian which = 8. The 8 means you + 7 + barbarian which = 9. I just went back and started a Civ 2 game to be sure. 7 Civs + Barbarian = 8 total. We'll know when Firaxis tell us for sure. The Mods people would of course like 8 Civs + Barbarian so they can play with the numbers. If they go with 8 that would be fine by me, however if they go with 7 there is not much I can do about it. In CTP 2 they went with 9 Civs, (I just open my game to count them)You + 7 Civs + Barbarian.------------------

My question more in detail, is who started the idea that there will only be 7 (8) civs in civ3, and where did they get the idea.I find no foundation of that proclomation. It says nothing about that in the website, and Dan nor anyone else has posted a thread on that here at apolotyn, so I'm just wondering where he got that idea. |

Thanks for the response, Mike, we've been holding our collect breath for awhile now. Although you still haven't said one way or the other, at least it wasn't "we'll have 7 civs". DBoM, all the info we've received so far regarding the # of civs in a game has come from reviewers, all of them saying 6 or 7 AI civs in the game. |

The no. 7 was mentioned by two magazines and the no. 8 by one magazine so far. That's where this (dis-)information came from. Note: This refers to the no. of civs per game. BTW: As long as the thread is - no posts are overlooked. |

 | That would be a tragedy/huge loss. The number in one game is a much less significant affair.Worse still would be if the reason for only having a few civ choices is that they could only find/program a few unique units/leaders. In other words, we could have one bad decision force a terrible reduction in game quality. |

It certainly keeps us speculating about the real number. Now assuming 7/8 are red herrings can it be more than the number of unique civs they give us initially? Would reviewers be stupid enough to report a number if that was not the maximum available on the Alpha build they got to preview? |

I think it's pretty clear what Mike is referring to:1) Firaxis HAS announced that there will be 16 selectable civs. 2) Firaxis has NOT said how many can appear simultaneously in one game. Frankly I'm surprised that such a fundamental issue is still open to adjustment at this late date. I suspect that Firaxis DID intend to stick with the "standard 8", and has been influenced by the vociferous objection to that limit. Whether it can be changed at this stage of development is an open question, but it sounds like they're taking another look. |

I agree with Kull. Why else should have the previews stated that only seven civs were playable at a time then? Of course, it's really great news that Firaxis is still taking this issue in mind... |

This is indeed a strong possibility. If this is the case, it also shows that Firxis is listening to the feedback of fans very hard indeed - contemplating to change the no. at this stage of the game's development. This is a very positive indicator indeed. Go Firaxis! |

I must say it is good news that the number of civs in one game has not been set in stone. OTOH I am troubled by the statement that "FIRAXIS has made no official announcement" on the matter, since we have seen statements in three reviews saying 7 or 8 civs max. In my mind that calls into question all other information in those reviews. If the reviewer just pulled the 7 or 8 civs out of the air, what else did they say that is unreliable? I hope that the answer is that FIRAXIS originally told the reviewer it would be 7 civs max and are now reconsidering (as suggested by KULL). I also hope that making such a major change this late in the game doesn't screw the whole thing up. I'd prefer a quality game with only 7 civs than a pieced-together game with more civs. |

I would assume from the 'no comment' post that while the number of civs won't decrease (obviously), they have likely allowed for more civs, but must test the effects on program stability and computational time. By the end of the game especially, the effect of an additional civ on computational time can be huge. I'll bet the final number is yet to be decided, but it won't be much more than in Civ 2.

Oh, I noticed the latest preview makes a refference to "lesser civilization". I am not sure, though, whether this refers merely to another, less powerful civilization or the so called "minor civ". I would assume the former is the case. |

Actually, "no comment" could be interpreted a million ways. There may still be only 8 civs at once. For that matter, there may only be ONE civ at once and you just play Sim Civ. For a lot a reasons, I wouldn't rule out THAT possibility, either. |

And then yin what would be the exact point of having military units if there was no one there to attack you?I suppose it depends on how they have designed the engine; perhaps they have left it open to be able to implement more civs. But I would certainly like to see more than 8 sides in the game; 16 would be nice...(15 + barbarians) |

Yes, 16 (or actually seventeen, with Barbarians?) would be the most sensible maximum, since I remember hearing the number of different civs is going to be 16... it would be a good idea just to be able to have them all in the game at the same time, if you really want to play against that many civs. However, even if the limit is 8, I am still going to buy the game and enjoy it every bit as much, although I realise it will cause many complications for those who play or design scenarios.

I het the impression that Firaxis is setting up for no more than 16 civs (8 major, 8 minor) in a normal game, since they probably aren't doing the facial animations for more than that. No biggee, that. I was starting to think those facial animation things are about as exciting as the civ2 heralds ( the only multimedia perk from civ2 I ALWAYS turn off). But I hope that it isn't a hardwired thing, and that scenario makers will be able to include a lot of civs if they wish. with or without custom designed faces to animate.BUT, until Firaxis comes out and says something, we won't know for sure. kind of like the 2020 - 2400 endgame date. |

This way Sid can also utilize his new visdim from Sim Golf Next something even less serious.
