I really hope the Ai knows how to use stacked combat because if it doesn't, single player games are going to be very one sided. It will be like Call to Power I and II where Ai civs can't stack units or hardly ever do and as a result are virtually ineffective in warfare. That would be very bad.I raise this issue because we already have 2 versions of civ and the Ai hasn't yet learned how to put planes on a carrier or missiles on a submarine. ------------------ Founder, Dear Leader and Great Helmsman of PROT -the People's Republic Off Topic www.delphi.com/prot1/ If you're happy and you know it, spam a thread. |

In CTP II, The AI had no problem building stacks. And what was in the stacks was sometimes even the right combo. The AI's problem in CTP II was it's meekness. There is a FRENZY MOD available that makes them considerably more aggressive. (So much so that they sometimes forget to defend) So it is possible to program. On the Carrier Issue that AH brings up, that is different. The whole stack never attacks at once. The program looks at options for each unit differently so the resulting attacks usually are far from coordinated. Once a stack is built, the stack can now be treated as a single entity for the programming side. With the very aggressive AI in the Gold version, stacking will change the game dramatically. RAH Well I tried to bring it back on topic |

The same arguement could be given for not having a complex tech tree, or wonders, or anything else. If the AI can't cope then the game is bad. It isn't exactly difficult to send all your spare units to the city nearest the threat then combine them into useful armies before marching into enemy territory. |

Can we get back on topic? If the ai can't use stacked combat properly then the game will be ruined, at least in single player mode. It will just be too easy to wipe out ai civs. Civ I and II give no confidence that they will get it right.

You mean at one point we were on topic? I know what your saying. But in this case, like almost every other new feature, it boils down to how good Firaxis programmed the AI. HOMM3 had pretty good AI stacks, and I see no reason why Firaxis couldn't do the same, unless they didn't try. And since we gamers put it high on our "fix-it" list, AND because I do think Firaxis is listening to us, AND because reports say that Sid wants to get this game done right, I am confident that the AI will be a worthwhile opponent. Mostly confident. |

I agree. The additional element of stacking is pretty trivial compared to assessing sensible places to dig in defensive positions and sensible force compositions to attack with and the right targets to attack. If they can get the AI to do that right then armies that fight simultaneously rather than in queue-formation is simple. |
