Fortunately for you, every settler comes armed with one. You just have to wait to discover interstellar quantum isotropes before you can charge up the powerpack

Why? What aspect of the game will be enhanced if you add plasma rifles to it? Sure you will have a cool unit that you can use to blast away all competition, but before they added it, you already had a couple really cool units to do that with, they are called the howitzer and the tank.

And besides there are two problems with adding plasma rifles: 1, the likelyhood that mankind will develop plasma rifles as opposed to some other equally powerful weapon, and 2, the timeframe involved before we develop plasma rifles which is not likely to be in the timeframe covered by civ 3

Yes, you've enraged firaxis enough. They won't release the game. Instead, they'll turn to shrimp business. Firaxis Shrimps ...that one more shrimp feelin'

come on, how sillier are we going to get before the website throws something new at us?

Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. There's shrimp kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried shrimp, deep fried shrimp, stir-fried shrimp, pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp san'wich...

Civ3 is like a box of chocolates...

If you want plasma rifles so bad, add them yourself. Firaxis won't add units to their game just to get that one extra sale. (I hope)

If firaxis starts putting in dumb futuristic units like the plasma rifle, which belongs in say alpha centauri two, then I'm going to wait for space empires five to come out instead of buying civ III. LOL

I'm happy to see that only half of the people who responded to this thread took it seriously. There was a time when 99% of the posters on this forum would have gone for my jugular if I'd made a suggestion like this (for example my even better suggestion, "Let's have two types of farm: animal farms and plant farms. The animal farms will occasionally form autocratic governments with communist ideals, led by the pigs on the farm. They will also cause damage to enemies who attempt to pillage the farm because the cattle will stampede and damage the enemy unit." That one got some great responses).

First person Civ, now there's an idea. Your councillors tell you their reports verbally (and only once) until you discover writing, then you get written reports which are out of date because they have to be couriered back to your palace. The map does not become available until you discover mapmaking and send out explorers to report back with new information. Dragons are reported just off the edge of the known world in all directions until superstition dies down. Eventually you get a big office with a nice red button to press anytime you get bored of hearing your generals tell you why you need more armies despite having a budget twice the size of the rest of the world already. An altogether different experience, but could be fun

Yeah, I think the idea went something like "Everybody likes first person shooters, so how about we let the King or Emperor or whoever is in charge run around with a railgun killing enemy units? It would greatly add to the gameplay."

What Civ3 needs... is fashion.

What else has played such a dominant role in world politics and civil happiness? If people wore moccasins you can bet Kruschev (I know that's spelled wrong) wouldn't be so keen on banging his shoe on the table. Certainly, fashions have signaled economic shifts and trends. With a fashion factor in Civ3, more realism, depth, and retro feeling could be used to augment this great game.

Fashion would have far reaching consequences in all parts of society. For example: In the late 1900s you should be able to measure the morale of your troops with a special "mood ring" feature that appears on the icons. All units so upgraded would recieve a 25% attack bonus, as enemy units would be impressed and less likely to fight after seeing how stylish and trendy the enemy forces are. Also around this time a new "disco bar" improvement could be build, increasing trendiness and happiness. Building lots of these makes you less trendy with other nations after disco goes out of style, but having a lot also increases the chance of getting the "John Travolta" leader unit.

Of course, everry time a style went out of fashion massive civil disorder would occur, bringing down democracies and such. To balance this, fashions could be offered as bribes to less trendy nations, increasing cash from exports while increasing world happiness due to the closing of the "fashion gap."

And in addition to all this, the final win-the-game project should be the "Ultimate look." What will happen when this new trend is released upon humanity? Only time and lots of People magazines will tell...

You guys have way too much time on your hands. Why aren't you doing something constructive with your energy, like playing Civ 2?

At least I have an excuse, I leant my game to a friend two weeks ago. Then they asked me to help them move. Now they won't talk to me. What I most want now is for a shrimp wizard to blast me away with a plasma rifle for my stupidity.

Marc (In my friends' defense, they aren't 'not talking to me', we just haven't had a chance to connect. I do trust them to return the game. Giving it up in the first place, however, was incredibly stupid on my part. Maybe we should start a thread on how to handle Civ withdrawl?)

Oddly enough, that's the game that they gave me in exchange. I don't really like it, though. Everything happens way too slowly for my liking (100 turns for a colony ship-come on!)

Try playing the game with Advanced tech level. In that setting each race starts out with several solar systems already colonized. If you do start in Pre-Warp, though, then yes, it takes forever to start colonizing (which is good for me, since I always play a Creative race with a tech bonus so I'm always colonizing in no time flat while my opponents are still researching nuclear drives).
