How cool would an absolute massive (no bigger than that) map be that people all over the internet could play at once? Lots of problems granted, but how cool would it be if you did have it?

Ok problem is that people aren't always online... how about having it so that a nations area is divided into regions (ie. provinces) The initial creator of the nation can they get friends and people he knows that are good and want to, to govern those provinces. You have a large number of people, over the world, so that there is a low chance that areas will be ungoverned at any time.

If no province commanders are online, other province commanders can temporarily take control of their areas. If NO ONE is online, then the computer plays for them.

Have a message system so human players can tell the absent player s the strategy they werre attempting and an auto-reporting system that summarises changes since that commander was last on.

If you played with people you have known over the smaller network games then you know each others strategies and can make rules (ie. "no buying techs") or just preferences among yourselves.

So whatdaya think?

Has anyone ever thought of email Civ, like email chess, and other turn-based games?

You get the idea, at the end of each player's turn, they would email their go to all the other players whose games would then update accordingly.

Admittedly, this would work best with only two players. Also, shuffling turns back and forth over the net at the very beginning of the game would be VERY boring.

Whilst the game is still at the stage where players are waiting for their first cities to crank out a unit, the game could be played over the current net format. Then, when player's civs start to grow, and individual turns begin to lengthen, the game could be switched over to the email format. By mutual consent, of course.

Josef - the now infamous PBEM multiplayter option, coaxed carefully back onto the screen in ctp2, but with that game - no telling if it actually works!

Well, there you go, you learn something new every day! I knew about online games, LAN games and...uugghhh...hotseat games (shudder, eyelid flickers), but not PBEM games. I bet I look pretty stupid now, eh?

You used the word 'infamous'. Are PBEM games really so bad?

I think it would be cool if there was a game where you just logged in whenever you felt like it, and was just given a civ that someone else was tired on playing. When you have to quit, you just quit and the computer gives your civ to someone that has logged on. If there is not enough people the computer will use AI-players. This way the game can go on day and night. I think not more than 32 civs in a game, it will get too slow otherwise, and there can be several games going on. It would be interesting to play since your opponent civs will change playstyle (beacouse some quit and others start). This could create a great mess of broken alliances and interesting situations. And it's always more fun with real people since you can do much more interesting agreements.

Interesting, yes, but is it possible in civ as we have it now? I think we then would have to have real-time civ..... Is that possible without destroying what is CIV? I think that would be V E R Y hard!

Maybe this could be like the game Maxis is creating(of course different ), "The Sims Online"(I think it is called that), where you will play a family in SimCity; get a job, make friends etc. Just make a civ-like game with the same frames(is that the right word?), that could be COOL!!

Who am I? What am I? Do we need Civ? Yes!!

There was a discussion on massively multiplayer civ a while ago. I am, of course, a big fan of the idea.
