We've been talking a lot about wonders recently, and it's given me an idea.

While certain wonders are certainly unique, there are others which certainly are not. West point/Sandhurst is an excellant example. Each empire should be able to produce one of each of the 'demi-wonder' types. Obviously they must not replace other wonders or amienities, and should only affect the city they are in, so you have to choose carefully where you build them. Some examples

Military Training Academy: The top training centre in the country. City and all cities linked to it by trade routes produce veteran units.

National Space centre: The place where all major space launches take place, and large amounts of spin off space research. All science in cities with trade routes to this city (not city itself) have +75% effect of science amienities.

Nuclear testing grounds: 2 unhappy citizens in city and those within 3 squares. Allow civ. to produce nuclear weapons.

How about:?

Secret aerospace center (Skunkworks): Halves prototype developement cost of aircraft.

Saint (fill in the blank)'s Cathedral: 2 unhappy citizens in city become content.

Strategic defense center (NORAD): you detect any nuclear launches and above-ground tests.

Instead of calling them "demi-wonders", just make them normal improvements/buildings and make them harder to build. They could be highlighted in a different colour of something to show that they can only be built once per civ.

Also, I REALLY HATE the protyping thing from SMAC, it was pointless, and is an example of where realism was taken too far, realism should be focused on trade, war etc.

'Micro-Wonders' -what is being discussed here
'Wonders' -what is being discussed in my thread
'Macro-Wonders' -Spaceship-style wonders.

There should be more Macro-Wonders in CIV III, not just so you can beat the game, but to add more to the playing experience.

I think this is a good idea. you would be able to build one of each per civ at a time. Your Palace is a good example of one. the idea is something each civ can build once (or rebuild), but would be difficult to live without.

Palace: classic effect.

Academy: acts as full barracks in home city, allows barracks in other cities to produce vet units (otherwise just have repair function).

Religious center?: allows building of cathedrals.

Nuclear test: allows building of nukes. unhappiness.

Space center: allows building of spaceship parts.
(I hate wonders which give benefits to all civs equally)

NOrad: acts as SDI within your borders.

I'd like to see more.

How about somethings such as:

Postal Service - Increased efficiency.

Mobile Phone Network - Increased production.

Secret Police - Reduced corruption, (decreased happiness)

National University - Increased Science output (increased McDonalds sales)

Good point about the secret police.

postal service and mobile phones- these should be advances which give an efficiency, these don't belong in a particular city. National universtiy is similar, even if you mean the best in the country, there are usually at least 2 that can claim to be that. Norad = SDI? That just doesn't make sense, seeing the absense of SDIs today.

Some more suggestions:
Communications HQ- something like can view inside all cities within, say, 20 squares.

X Square- famous square reknown throughout the land (red square, Times Square, Trafalgar Square). +20% Luxuries in city

That reminds me EC, some of these demi-wonders should have downsides too. Just look at the horrible atrocity that happened in Tiananmen (sp?) Square.

Hmmm. How about protests (not civil disorder) which create -1 happiness per turn they occur. This could mean peaceful protests turn violant later, as demands are not met.

Secret police = Reduced corruption? Hahaha. Yeah right.

Maybe higher percentages for enemy spies, though.

Maybe the secret police/FBI demiwonder would have different benefits under a communist/fundamentalist gov than a republic/democric gov.

Postal service - quite a good example of one per civ needed. increased efficiency? is that the same as reducing corruption\waste? And if so, don't we have enough of this kind? seems like a dud demiwonder. Try for a different effect. the efficiency angle doesn't seem to fit, anyway.

Mobile phone network - I like it. but production? how about trade instead?

National university - I don't get the idea, and I think a science wonder with a national effect (one that's not just a ____ in each city, ala SETI) runs the risk of being too powerful in ICS brand civs. more data please.

EC, The Norad extended SDI effect may be too much, but then, the SDI effect as is is probably too much. revamping of that effect is needed.
On second thought, why would an SDI be city based? most of the models I've heard of suggest a space based system. maybe a national wonder could make possible the SDI defense.
Then again, one wonder to make nukes, then another to make them obsolete may be going too far.

Both the effects of a Postal Service and Mobile Networks could nicely be tied in to the concept of supply if it were included. (Depending of course on how it were implemented) Existing high quality communication and freight systems would have to impart some sort of positive effect on you're ability to supply troops. At least within your own domain.
