Suggestion 2

Random Map creation utility is lacking.

Maps seldom generate that honestly represent the real affect of nature.

Have a world generation utility.

Options are given for distance from sun, axis tilt, age, number techtonic plates, etc.

Pangea continent is created and players define basic techtonic plate definition.

Computer then assigns the distance each plate has moved based on age of world. Rifts and mountain ranges are then defined based on techtonic plate reaction.

Climate could also play a factor in the creation of deserts or jungles near equator, or forests in areas between moutain ranges and coasts.

Finally, have the map accurately represent the shape of a world. Have black unused areas which represent the space lost due to a round world and have points match up so the world actually behaves like a ball instead of a flat square. example currently it takes just as long to go around the world at the pole as the equator . . . this is bogus.

Didn't SMAC already have the thing where on the east side of mountains there was desert and on the west side there was a more lush landscape (or was it the other way around).

Anyway, I think this is something we don't have to worry about, 'cause in every iteration of civ, the designers have always tried to make the world generation more realistic.

For the globe idea look at Risk 2 or perhaps Diplomacy (if you were so unfortunate to buy it),
the idea didn't work too well for those games, but perhaps it will work better for Civ. You
never know...
