Simple poll: What's your favorite tribe to play as in Civ. Don't take it as your favorite position on the Earth map, but just the tribe you play as most.

1) Greek
2) French
3) Roman

well, if it was on real maps, I would be either the English on the Europe map, or the Zulu's on the large world map, keeping their original locations.

Sometimes I play whatever tribe I feel like. One game has me playing as Chancellor Daniel von Anderson of the Germans.

I never play on the map of Earth. Too dull. I usually play the Celts, sometimes the Vikings.

In SMAC, I play as the University or the Consciousness, or on occassion the Gaians.

Apart from favourite civ's, I also have some favourite civ-groupings that I like.
I love playing with seven classic civs (Carthage, Rome, Greece, Egypt, etc.), or seven European ones (France, England, Russia, etc.). Or a modern, global one (USA, Japan, China, India, Germany, etc.) I'll even change the rules.txt to get a nice combination.

My favourite starting position on earth: If I want an easy one, I'll choose a civ from the America's - usually you'll have the whole two continents to your self. Maybe shared with one other civ. For an action-packed game, I'll play a centrally located civ like Babylon or Persia. The opponents will come from three sides.

I miss the ability of creating your own tribe in Civ 2. In Civ I played either the tribe Buffalos with the capital city named Horns or the tribe Kongs with me being King

In Civ 2 I usually play the Chinese or Russians.

I try to play each game as a different civ, but my favourites (the ones I play as the most often) are:
1.Romans
2.Ukrainians
3.Incas
I like to play as some of the "smaller" civs such as Finnish, Belgians, Byelorussians, Norwegians, etc. My latest game was as Vlad Dracul of the Transsylvanians.

Worst Enemies:
1.Carthaginians
2.Celts
3.French

OrangeSfwr: Thanks for your nice welcoming words.
You're absolutely right: Zulus and Russians suck.
I don't know if I imported this hate from Civ1, but I think so.

My favorite location to play on earth are either the americas or india, a faible I have from Civ1.
When I was alreadyso good, that nothing else made fun, I played the Indians and watched how long I could resist behind the Himalaya, not moving out a single unit.

Another thing that actually doesn't belong here, but I saw that many others like me created their own custom civs. Has anyone compiled them? I have about 40 of them from the Mayas to Romanians, from Chileans to the Etruscs.

Civ I: Zulus and nothing else. Ah... the good old days when you could still conquer the world with Catapults......

Civ II: Any Civ that used the "Classical" city style. By Civ 2 my playing style had shifted to a "wait till I get Armor and they're still using elephants" stretegy. Therefore, wars were exercises in simplicity. I'd bet that a monkey could win them with the way they were set up (do not try this at home, lest you wish to obtain Civ-playing monkey who can beat Diety Raging Hordes no problem)

Now I can't go beck to the military stretegy... drat.

Read about him somewhere (don't remember where). IIRC Vlad Dracul=Vlad Tepes=Vlad the Impaler=Dracula, right?

The silliest civ I've played as is probably the Ukrainian National Soccer Team (as Valeri Lobanovskyj). For city names I used names of clubs plus Koncha Zaspa (Dynamo Kyiv training camp).

OT: Vlad Dracul, Vlad Tepes and Vlad the Impaler are the same person. Drakula is only a legend, based on the real person, who was the prince Vlad Dracul. (BTW, in romanian, dracul means "the evil" and tepes means "the impaler").

Check out the whole story here:
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Aegean/7545/Dracula.html

or here

http://members.aol.com/johnfranc/drac05.htm

quote:

Vlad became quite known for his brutal punishment techniques; he often ordered people to be skinned, boiled, decapitated, blinded, strangled, hanged, burned, roasted, hacked, nailed, buried alive, stabbed, etc. He also liked to cut off noses, ears, sexual organs and limbs. But his favorite method was impalement on stakes, hence the surname "Tepes" which means "The Impaler" in the Romanian language.

The rest is legend.

Back to the "Favorite tribe" I must admit in CIV I find every tribe to be more or less equal, if played on a random map (SMAC factions are more different, you know).

That said, I usually let me drive not by tribe name but by the leader of my choice at the moment.
Because I feel I'm the leader as in RPG, I'm "mood" driven, you see .

Leaders I remember to have used:

Einstein with German
Leonardo da Vinci with Roman
Jeanne d'Arc with French
Bell or Franklin with American
Geronimo with native americans

I'm so egocentric...

For me, the historical and geographical accuracy of my game play is very important. I simply wouldn't enjoy playing on a random map. That is one of the reasons why I loathed Call to Power: it didn't come with an Earth map. And when the Earth map finally became available, it didn't place your chosen race in it's proper geographical location - a conundrum which seemed utterly stupid to me.
Thus with Civ, my favourite tribes are always the ones who have the greatest potential to colonise and expand to other portions of the globe. So if I played China, colonising the America's was out of the question, but if I played Spain, or France for example, then the possibility of American colonies became viable and realistic to my imagination.

But over all, England was my favourite tribe, for not only could I fully colonise North America, and not only could I have colonies in Africa and Asia, but also I could colonise Australia.

Bkeela.

Bkeela - I hear ya. When I play on the Earth map, I often reconstruct the empire as it historically was the way you said you do with the English. Usually I play on a map that is a zoomed image of the world...that doesn't make sense...like the Mediterannian, or the South Pacific (maps I make). And then I try to reconstruct the country or empire.

Like to play as the:

1.Texans(Americans) with Washington-on-the-Brazos as my Capitol.

2.Germans (as Matthew II)

3.The Byzantines(Greeks) as Justinian.

I always made sure I played on the world map with the following replicas as my enemies...

1. Aztecs ( Bloody Mexicans)

2. Russians (bloody commies and their vodka)

3. Persians (destroy the crusaders states, eh?)

Yes, nice names...the Ukrainian Football civ has such beauties as Kryvbas Kryvyj Rih, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, Prykarpattya Ivano-Frankivsk, Vorskla Poltava, Chornomorets Odessa (where Oleksandr Holokolosov plays), Zirka Kirovohrad, Zakarpattya Uzhhorod, Systema-Boreks Borodyanka and Polyhraftekhnika Oleksandriya. Other football clubs that are nice as city names:
Total Network Solutions Llantsantffraid FC (Wales), Akranes from Iceland and Ekranas from Lithuania (or was it the other way around?), Dnyepr-Transmash Mogilyov from Belarus, Chernomorets Novorossiysk and Tom' Tomsk from Russia, Panathinaikos, Paniliakos Pirgos and Panionios from Greece, Dukla Banska Bystrica from Slovakia, Antibiotik from Bulgaria, Haka Valkeakoski (sp?) from Finland, Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje and of course Skopje Skopje from Macedonia, and lots of others I can't think of at the moment.

Try it, it's a completely new city-naming experience!!!

Edit: it's a shame most of them are longer than 15 letters though. Abbreviate Creatively.

COOL!!! I did that too!

I like generally the classic civs.

I usually play with:

1. Romans 75% of the time
2. Germans 17% of the time
3. Greeks 8% of the time

(yeah I know I'm bored cause I calculate percentages )

I don't like many Islands since I gereally dislike sea warfare because at king level and higher the computer usually rules the sea and always wins in conditions where I would lose.

I also dislike long and wierd land stripes where one civ blocks me from getting to other civs. I like big continents. I shoudl have the biggest one for my self and have some civs contact me.

I like to play as relatively exotic, non-conventional tribes, usually the Carthagians or the Mongols.

btw, Tiberius, which transylvanian ethnic group do you belong to?

I usually play with the world map and everyone starting on Eurasia (and sometimes the zulus). This generally solves the problems of a huge, hard to kill civilization on the American landmass which would never have developed in real life.

You mean DID not develop: let's say mesoamerican culture lasted from 600BC to 1500AD: that's 2000 years, that's the time Babylonia needed to evolve from the sumerian to persian period.
"Would have never developed" is an ignorant statement.

How many people here like random maps? And what type of randomness (is that a word)? I just let the computer do the stats for me in civ2, but in SMAC I liked lots of rain, lots of rocks, and lots of fungus (and TI of course).

What about you all?

BTW: I'm back from a vacation. School starts in 21 hours 03 minutes 32 seconds
