The ability to CUSTOMIZE the game!
-Units
-New Units
-Maps
-Tech Tree
-etc.

It should be apparent from this entire discussion board that the are a lot of very intelligent, creative people out there who can think up an unimaginable amount of new ideas for games. This is true for almost every genre of game. For nearly every game there is a fan base that formulates and discusses incredible ideas on how to improve the existing popular game.

Wide-sweeping customization would increase the re-playability and longevity ten fold. With the advent of instant sharing of ideas on the internet, there should hardly be a game made that doesn't allow some sort of player tweaking and input. Everyone has there own favorite way of doing things. Customizing a game adds hours upon hours of fun to already great games.

That they, Brian Reynolds and team, don't play it too safe when they make the game. I want a somewhat new game, not something that will feel like a good SMAC expansion with better graphics. Their latest statements make me think so.
