I have been getting very angry with several AI Civs. They invade all of my city squares, and my people starve. I regularly insist that they withdraw troops, but they just bring them back. They don't get mad and declare war on me because their units are warriors and horsemen and I am using dragoons. I want to declare war on them, but there is no way of doing it. Does anybody have similar problems? ------------------ Long live the Communists! -- SilverDragon [This message has been edited by SilverDragon (edited April 01, 2000).] |

Another question: How come the AI can declare war on you whenever they want, and their reputation does not appear to get damaged. (other civs sign alliances, treaties, etc. with them.) The human players have to damage their reputations to declare war. |

Demanding tribute will make the AI withdraw, just as they do when you ask them to leave. However, it is more threatening, and you are more likely to get war. On the other hand, you may actually get some tribute(gold or tech). |

One way around this is to put a dip in each border city, and bribe anything that comes your way... Interestingly enough, this doesn't have an effect on your reputation or status with the ai-civ... KhanMan the Mountaineering Sayen |

I guess there are a number of different ways to deal with unwanted troops on your land. Mine is to build the Maginot Line. Set up a string of forts with interlocking zones of control. Make sure the forts are no more than 3 hexes away from one of your cities. That way you dont piss your population off. Try to use 2 units in the forts so the ai cant bribe em too. But, for this to work the frontier must be limited in size or you will eat up your production trying to occupy all the forts. Soooo find and establish choke points early on. The enemy cant squat on your land if you dont let em get there. |

Neon-Your ZOC reasoning is very solid; however, I have found that AI cheating prevents it from working in practice. I have MGE and the AI frequently makes illegal moves where it will move a military ground unit occupying a square adjacent to one of my units to another such square. Has anybody else seen this form of blatant cheating? |

I just love it when I see AI units next to my cities, contact them to get them off my land, and find that "Please remove your troops" selection has 'mysteriously' disappeared. This happens in peace, monarchy or any other government, with any AI attitude. When this happens, I know it's time to brace for a, ahem, 'sneak attack'. The first time it happened, I got so angry I temporarily altered rules.txt and reloaded... |

Neon Deon and shamrock - I have seen the same phenomenon shamrock describes, but only fairly late in the game. I've also seen other people post about their units being bribed by AI troops (not spies nor diplos). My theory is that AI units acquire diplo/spy abilities late in the game. |

You want to goad the AI into war? Here are a few methods.1. The best way is to build a new city as close to one of his as you can get. Definitely within his city's radius. This tends to turn on some threat indicator and is usually enough to get a war, especially when coupled with 2. 2. Every single turn demand tribute, withdrawl of troops even when they're aren't any nearby, etc. The AI's attitude toward you will erode very quickly. 3. Send a relatively worthless unit far into his civ. Usually they will sneak attack it rather than let you have free reign in their territory. |

inca911 - in trick #3, I'd recommend a pair of units instead of a solo unit. The AIs are sometimes smart enough to bribe your instigator over to their side. If you keep your units stacked, they don't have that option. |

Master Bob, I believe that a player's "reputation" counts toward the final score. Besides which, if you break one pact, the other AIs, even allies, seem leery of you for a time, shoving units in your way every time you make a move By the way, is mine a happy bug?...I find that I'm seldom affected by the "no movement to adjoining squares from(ditto) of an opponent" rule -when I meet an AI unit, I simply move 1 square away from it, then go on my way rejoicing, by means of the numeric keyboard, or the "go to" commands. |

George Garrett... MasterBob is correct. Reputation has nothing to do with score. Yes, after you screw somebody, nobody wants to trust you anymore, but who cares. They are all going to hate you anyway no matter how nice you are, so it doesn't matter in the long run. Some have said that a spotless reputation makes it easier to continue "peace keeping" actions under Democracy in combination with the UN... but no one has really proved it makes a difference |

If you don't want to declare war with them directly, then harrass them until they start it. Demand tribute and tresspass constantly, particularly on their developed squares, and they will go to war with you soon enough. Also, the United Nations wonder is a must if you still have a lot of opponents late in the game. Take a city and you always have the option of peace if you have to rebuild your troops. Goad them into war and repeat the process. Piss them off on every opportunity and you will get your war |

About the Eiffel tower, does someone knows how it REALLY works? in code level?I always build it (or conquer it, or bribe it ) and it never seems to help. I sit around, waisting my time, gathering howitzers for years. Many many turns since the last time I destroyed a civilization and still everybody hates me. I have never witnessed Eiffel's effect. Is it for real? And it is true. everybody always end up hating you. so you might as well not care. ------------------- Just make sure you have fortifying units. I always kill enemy units and drain thier cities, and whoops, I'm all out of units. and by next turn they rush buy their own fortifyers. |

The Eiffel tower is a worthless wonder. Even if you build it... keep a spotless reputation... and give things to AI civs, they will hate you anyway as the game progresses. Nothing you can do will stop them from creating all those wonderful deals to stop your aggression. Well wait, their is one thing you can do... you can stay weak and be lossing, and then they will like you |

You are correct... The ET will bring you back to spotless, no matter how much of a scum you have been... and they will still hate you anyway The only reason to build it is if you are going for score... And it only counts as building another wonder. Being spotless doesn't add anything [This message has been edited by Ming (edited April 18, 2000).] |

No problem... I just wanted to remind people. There was a point when people thought reputation actually affected the score. Or, they thought that reputation could help their relations late in the game... wrong on both accounts.Against the AI, reputation will matter early. They are more likely to deal with you. But later, if you are winning, it doesn't matter. The only thing that reputation may matter to later in the game is that some think that if your reputation is spotless, The UN will allow you to continue "peace keeping" action more often if you are in Democracy. I have never seen proof of this, and I'm not sure it matters... but why take the chance |

Thanks for the answers guys.I pretty much have noticed those things on my own, but I wanted to be sure it's not just because I'm being really nasty to other civs. Another war related question: I find joy in annoying AI's to the point when they declare war and then some storng ally of mine declares war for no reason. The problem is, that often the options for demanding tribute disappear, and very often, although AI is invading my territory, I do not have an option to ask him to leave. What's the deal with that? I recall reading in some thread (maybe even this one :eek that when you can't make them leave, it's a sign of sneak attack coming. Have other people noticed it? |

The Eifel Tower, HAH! I think the improvement in your reputation is highly overrated. But, it is there..... I took an enemy city that had the Eifel Tower. My reputation was Atrocious. The turn after my conquest of Eifel, I looked again at the Foreign Minister screen where power rating and reputation are shown, and my reputation had IMPROVED to Despicable. How wonderful. Reputation, no problem; as Ming says, the AI all will hate you late in the game when you get powerful or ahead in science or money or number of cities anyway. So don't look at the chart that shows your reputation and you won't have to be concerned about it. he he he |

Sirotnikov... A good ally might declare war on you when another civ does because they are also allied with them, or they have signed one of those anti agression pacts against you that you see all the time late in the game when you take the lead. Look at the diplo screen every turn or so and see what their attitude is toward you, and watch it get worse as the game progresses... even if they are your ally. You can give them stuff to move it up one or two... but it will go down a level every turn if you are winning. So unless you give them something EVERY TURN... it's a lossing proposition. Just screw em... they will hate you anyway. Also, your options of what you can demand of other civs changes depending on what government you are in. For example, if you are in democracy or republic, you can no longer demand tribute. I hope this helps |

No! No! No! You misunderstood! I guess it's my fault. Reading my previous post I saw that I didn't express my self correctly. I meant that my ally has declared war on the other agressor civ. The question is, why do I often don't have the option to ask other civs to get out of my space? I read it's a sign of a sneak attack, is that true? Sorry.
