Ok, I've just emailed Paul a new scenario. If anyone wants me to email it directly to them, let me know. This scenario is on a medium sized map, so it should prove more of a challenge.I was hoping someone else would create a scenario (so I could defend my win from last game ), but since there didn't seem to be any takers, you're stuck with my attempt. Good luck. |

Sinking Trireme Syndrome (STS) My trireme sunk several times although it was placed in the city. Looks like the program checks only the squares next to the trireme square and did forget the square the trireme is placed in. And since there was only water... I reloaded first time this happened. Did I cheat? Anyway, I finished at 1857. Working out my gamelog now. Does anyone know the English word for "Färbemittel"? BTW somebody wrote into another topic that airports increase the gain of freights. I gave it a try and I didn´t notice any difference. Can someone elaborate? |

Oedo: The airport tactic may have been on the Two Continents Trading Strategy thread. IIRC, you need an airport in the origin and destination city in order to have airports increase the trade bonus.

Tom - looks like a good game. oedo - I too have never seen any trade benefit from an airport in my city. 1857 finish? And without 80 shields either. Looks like I have my work cut out for me. AS - just saw your post. I guess the AI rarely builds airports, at least in the games where I'm really paying attention to trade routes... SG - well what can I say about this game? En garde! |

Sorry about the triremes guys. Here's a work around: when you want your trireme in port, put it on sentry/sleep duty. It will not sink in subsequent turns. |

Okay, now I am three games behind! I guess I will have to take some time off of work to get these done. First I should write an article on how computers and the internet are increasing productivity... SG(1or2) sent me a save map a little while ago that we could use for a game after this one. Sorry I hadn't submitted it yet, I wasn't trying to be rude. |

Thanks Adam Smith. I think I also considered this possibility and even wondered if I should give Radio away. Finally I didn´t Structure in one turn: Rushbuild a temple, then change to structure (you will need at least a 60 shields rate). Cost: 160 gold. Another way is just disbanding an old unit. Post game mentions: I tried this game twice. The log is the first and 'official' game with a few notes marking the second game progress. In both games, I tried to bypass Monarchy, and in fact did bypass Monarchy! But in game one, I had rotten hut luck which led to an 1811 AC date. With Good luck, my second game was 1777 and is obviously not official, but interesting. Point one: I used all my 'none' settlers to join the one city until size 8 to accelerate growth. Point two: In game 1, I mad the mistake of selling off the coliseum after size 12. I lost a lot of flexibility in doing this. Point 3: Didn't even build a supermarket or superhighway in game one! Point 4: Two woods with railroad and a combination of a Factory/refining plant/OffshorePlatform/and Manufacturing Plant gave 80+shields! Point 5: I didn't build a single settler or engineer. Pollution was minimal with all the sea. Point 6: Only the Modules took longer than 1 turn and in game two, I was able to make a ship in minimum time. So begins my entry into the OCC Fortnight competition. I've hung around the threads long enough.Man, Aurelius, 1770's? That's great, even if it was attempt #2. Well, despite what the intro said, when I looked at the map, I deemed it quite possible to get 80+ shields. Just a little engineer work on the land squares (Rail-roaded mined hills) gave me 87 shields. As a bonus, my production did not drop below 80 if I got one polluted. Because this is the way I was going to play it, I saw no need to research refrigeration, so I didn't. This might be a key point for anyone reading this that hasn't played it yet. But if you're reading this without playing, you are tainting your results...to put it mildly. Nice map, Tom. I was going to do an island map for the one after my next map, but I'll have to hold off on that, now, i suppose. My biggest challenge was finding all the other civs, and getting money from them. Usually, I'd give them one tech, and they'd tell me they had more pressing matters to attend to. oh well. here is the log, with the preview above it. As always, please jump in and let me know how I can improve. Monarchy -- 3450bc Republic -- 1050bc Democracy -- 200ad Colossus -- 2200bc Copernicus -- 20ad Shakespeare -- 480ad Isaac Newton -- 980ad Darwin's Voy -- 1754ad Apollo Program -- 1762ad 1st trade -- 725bc 2nd trade -- 600bc 3rd trade -- 500bc Trade -- 2050bc Construction -- 800bc Sanitation -- 1 ad Refrigeration -- NEVER Automobile -- 1600ad Computers -- 1640ad Space Flight -- 1760ad Alpha Centauri -- 1825bc (okay, it was actually 1825ad) Size 12 -- 560ad Size 21 -- 760ad And here is the log...

Good to see my little comment about not getting 80+ shields hasn't thrown people off . I myself only realized after building a manufacturing plant that I could get 80 shields if I changed those two off island squares to forest. (I had tried a similar map a few weeks back - but with only ocean squares - and topped out at 73 production, so I jumped to an incorrect conclusion).I agree with Vik that Refrigeration was superfluous. I also thought that engineers were superfluous until I realized that you could get 80+ shields. I landed in 1841, by the way. Didn't keep a detailed log though. I stupidly didn't give the Greeks Rocketry when they demanded it in the later stages of the game. They cancelled the alliance and immediately sneak attacked me. Luckily, they had not developed Amphibious Warefare so after killing all my freight (that were waiting to rush build components), the Greek bombers and battleships just sort of hovered around for the rest of the game. Edit: Vik, looking at your log, your biggest setback was in city growth. You waited until you had built Shakespeare's Theatre before beginning WLTCDs. If you had built a colloseum a few hundred years earlier, you could have grown to size 12. Then build Shakespeare's and the sewer system and grown to 21. Yuo will find that the cost of building the colloseum is more than made up for by having 5 or 6 extra population units for a few centuries. Hey Vik,I had the same problems finding the other civs. But when I met them, I gave them all the science they would permit. It didn't matter if they were allies or just worshipfully at peace or Hostile/Icy. I just gave them what they demanded and more. And if they only took one or two techs, the next turn, I force fed them the remaining science. Concerning money, I didn't do so well on gifts and I can't remember a single tribute. One thing I noticed in your log that might be off a bit, first science should be Map making. All the huts with that explorer are great. I saw Oedo researched Map first as well. Of course, you may have operated from the perspective of getting a quick Monarchy without Hut Science problems. There are trade offs: It's early huts and early contacts versus Early monarchy given four whales off Gibraltar. But I did get in trouble for being a despot for so long! You mention 1777 as being good on a second try, well, getting literacy and republic in early hut science was very lucky! Concerning the Spaceship, I thought a good tact in this game was to use a dip to get nones and disband them during the Structures phase of the space ship. I did this three times in game one as I hadn't quite converted the land to woods and there was a very rare occasion of pollution during structure-time. I had 80 shields in game one with a supported Transport and Cruiser. One can also use the 160gd temple trick to make one turn structures...but that is why I couldn't do the one or two turn Modules later Engineers were not needed--one pre-worked settler sufficed. And neither was Refrigeration needed....at least I didn't build a Supermarket--though the land was fully improved! That Explorer was Great! I didn't take any huts on the third movement and rarely on the second. Hey Oedo, did you regret selling the Coliseum off early? I sure did! I Didn't have my first trade routes established! For some reason, I've never considered that trade routes make the city people more happy...go figure ! AU |

Aurelius, I didn´t notice it during the game, but you´re right. After the third trade route I could have had survived on a 10% Lux-Rate with colosseum. Without I played a 20%.Crow, yóu´re are also right, Färbemittel is dye. Now I know what they mean with that word . And maybe next time Sten will tell you what a ´kreiger´ is |

I had a great start and got many huts with only 2 barbarian huts.I'm really starting to like explorers.I only had 2 turns for a short time despite maximum science and scientists.I'm starting to think there is yet another difference with the MAC version. At the end I could barely manage 5 turns with 100% science. My trade routes went from +12 to +19 after superhighways so it was well worth it. I learned about the sinking trireme phenomena some time ago while trying to sneak an outpost in a MP game I also built a mass transit for reasons that are currently unclear. 4000-Alcatraz-settler joins city-tax rate adjustment for 1 turn -0-60-40 3900-warrior 3800-Map Making 3500-trireme-hut-horseman-NON-contact Greece-gift horseback-peace-share maps 3400-Laws-warrior-start wonder 3350-hut-50 gold 3250-hut-archer-supported 3050-hut-wandering nomad-NON-hut-100 gold 3000-disband warrior 2950-Monarchy-revolt-gift Burial to Greece-wonÕt ally 2850-govt-Monarchy-hut-100 gold 2750-hut-archer-NON 2650-hut-chariot-NON 2550-hut-50 gold-hut 50 gold 2500-Writing-Collosus-Greeks request alliance-signed-receive 50 gold 2450-contact Canada-trade Laws for Masonary-alliance-gift Map-share maps 2350-hut-Math 2300-library 2200-Currency 2150-hut-50 gold-hut-barb horse 2050-hut-50 gold 2000-market-Canada gifts 25 gold 1950-hut-Literacy 1900-temple-hut-horseman-NON 1800-Trade-Canada gifts 25-gift Myst and Math to Greece-receive 50 gold 1750-share maps with Canada-Greeks cancel alliance-4 units sent home 1700-beads caravan 1650-salt caravan 1600-beads to Athens-56 bonus-salt 56 1550-Philosophy-Republic-Revolt-hides caravan-trade Literacy to Canada for Pottery-receive 50 gold-hut 50 gold 1450-govt-Republic-hides to Athens 80 bonus 1400-start Òwe loveÓ 5-hides caravan 1350-Canada gifts 50 1300-Seafaring-end Òwe loveÓ 7 1250-harbor 1050-Construction 1000-colliseum-trade Canada Trade for Warrior Code-start Òwe loveÓ 7-contact English-gift Construction and Republic-alliance-share maps-contact France-gift Literacy and Math-peace 975-hides to Paris 206 bonus 950-aquaduct-start wonder-gift Republic to Canada-Greeks declare war 875-end Òwe loveÓ 12 850-Medicine-gift 50 gold and Philosophy to Greece-peace-trade Repubic for The Wheel 800-gift Philosophy and Writing to England-share maps-Philosophy to Canada-share maps-trade France Republic for Iron Working-gift Philosophy-share maps-gift Repub;ic and Iron to Greece-share maps 750-gfit Monarchy to France 650-gift Monarchy to Canada-trade Greece Seafaring for Engineering-gift Monarchy 575-CopeÕs-gift Astronomy to France-Iron to England-Astronomy to England-Writing,Trade and Pottery to Greece-wonÕt ally 550-University 500-dye caravan-start wonder-contact Dutch-gift Math,Construction and Writing-alliance 475-dye to Athens-demanded 344 bonus-hut 25 gold 450-Sanitation 425-trade Sanitation to Canada for Banking-gift The Wheel to Dutch-no gifts 400-trade Sanitation to England for Navigation 350-France declares war-gift Navigation to Greece 325-sell colliseum 300-ShakeÕs-sell temple 275-peace with France 225-Invention 125-England gifts 50-Canada 100 75-Democracy-revolt-hut-3 barbs 50-hut-legion-NON 25-govt-Democracy --------------------------------------------------------------- AD1-start Òwe loveÓ 12 20-sewer system 60-build university-start wonder 100-Gravity 120-Canada gifts 50 180-France declares war-Dutch cancel alliance 200-end Òwe loveÓ 22- sell sewer 220-trireme sunk by barb caravel-explorer lost-sell aquaduct 240-Physics-gift Invention to England and Canada-Greece declares war 280-Steam Engine 340-Sir IkeÕs-gift Invention to Greece-peace-trade Physics for Bridge Building 380-Railroad 400-bank-start wonder 420-Gunpowder 480-Magnetism-England gifts 50- 520-Metallurgy 560-Electricity 600-Chemistry 660-England gifts 50 680-DarwinÕs-Explosives-Industrialization-gift RR to England,Canada and Greece-Dutch declare war 720-The Corporation 760-stock exchange 780-Refining-peace with Dutch 820-oil freight 840-Steel 860-salt freight-England gifts 50 900-Combustion-transport 960-Automobile 980-oil to York 192 bonus 1000-superhighway 1020-Electronics 1080-Mass Production 1100-Mass Transit?! Hilarious thing happened in 1AD. In all the years I've played Civ I have never seen it before... After giving all my techs (and they were a lot ) the Canadian envoy told me this after my request for a gift:We are appalled at the pathetic state to which your society has sunk. We have no choice but to present you with the gift of Feudalism, which we hope will help you modernize your civilization Some time later when I gave them Computers and stuff they told me the same and gave me Polytheism... Funny guys Anyway, I screwed up the endgame again, forested that grassland too late so I had to spend too much cash on caravans and lost 7 turns after Space Flight. Could have landed in 1675 . Well, 1725 looks good on my cv too The summary: Wonders: Collosus-2050BC Copernicus-250BC Shakespeare-25BC Newton-460AD Darwin-1020AD Apollo-1360AD Governments: Monarchy-2450BC Republic-725BC Democracy-25BC Size12-500BC Size21-180AD Size23-220AD Trade: 1st-825BC 2nd-725BC 3rd-700BC Techs: Trade-1550BC Construction-1950BC Sanitation-250BC Refrigeration-not Automobile-700AD Computers-1020AD Space Flight-1300AD Alpha Centauri-1725AD 4000BC: Moby's Dick founded 3800BC: Warrior 3750BC: Map Making 3350BC: Code of Laws 3200BC: Warrior, hut 50 gold 2950BC: Hut Currency 2600BC: Monarchy, revolution 2500BC: Hut barbs 2450BC: Monarchy 2300BC: English, gave Myst, Monarchy, Horseback, Currency. This was quite a game. Despite many more mistakes than I usually make, I still managed an 1869 landing. I did get 3800g from trade though. I like these island cities! I really messed up in several places. I should've built a sewer before starting Shakes, I could've had another 1 or 2 citizens. Once I got to size 24 I never sold my sewer or aqueduct. I saved the game about this time & got back to it 2 days later, I guess I just forgot . Also, I never built superhighways because I thought it wouldn't help much, but it seems like some people did. I thought it only affected roaded squares and that's why I didn't bother. I did get one thing right though. I gave away almost all my science up until about the time I got steel, this seemed to help my science rate. Dear friends, I want to post this message here telling you I've completed a scenario for OCC competion. I won't email it to Paul until more people have had a chance to complete the current one. Also, if you are currently working on a scenario for OCC Fortnights, and you want to use yours instead of mine for the #6 competition, no problem -- let me know so I can possibly refine mine some more. I tried to create a scenario that would be a challenge throughout the game -- I thought the barbarian city of Mentos would provide that challenge on OCC #4, but it sadly did not. I sure hope this fits the bill. I have test-played it, and it kept an average player like me on the edge of my seat the whole game. If everything works correctly (and that is a huge assumption with this unpredictable AI), you should experience a new issue to deal with every 15 or 20 turns. Here's to hoping. |

More strength to your right arm and I am looking forward to the challenge - if you are average what does that make me (lamebrain of the millenium, I guess, - had to get that in before too many people volunteered suggestions! ) ------------------ ____________ Scouse Git[1] "CARTAGO DELENDA EST" - Cato the Censor |

let me liken the "average OCC player" comment to chess:I am (or was) rated as a 1700 chess player by the US Chess Federation. Even though I can walk into nearly any auditorium and beat 95%-100% of the people there, a 1700 rating is just an "Average" rating. How can this be? Well, compared to the people who play in USCF rated tournaments, I am just an average player, but compared to the general population, I am well above average. So, while you may consider yourself less than average in our Fortnight competition, rest assured that you would easily beat the majority of the civ2 playing population in an OCC game. You have my utmost confidence in your abilities. Besides, when I practice OCC on my own, I almost exclusively play on little islands. OCC#5 (my first Fortnight Competition) was right up my alley. ***Edited to ask: "By the way, what does 'Scouse Gits' mean or stand for, and why are there two of you? Are you the same, or different people?"***

Vik - Scouse means a person who comes from Liverpool. (It can also mean the local Liverpool dialect, as well as a "Merseyside" stew) Git is a contemptible person. Yes, there are two of us - why? Because, there are not three of us!(yet) When we first registered, there was a doubt as to whether my e-mail would be acceptable to Apolyton, so instead we used SG1's address. Hope you're not toooooo confused. ------------ SG (2) |

SG*, I am still confused, but less so than before. Don't you people speak English over there? I've never heard of a 'scouse' or a 'git' but I have eaten a mighty fine breakfast food called "grits." Based on a recent large-world scenario you (or your brother) submitted in another thread, I would have believed one from Liverpool is called a "Liverpudlian." |

I speak English, you speak American. Grits? Are you eating a road? Remember, we are two nations separated by a common language! Liverpudlian is another adjective for people/things from Liverpool. (Both Scouse and Git are informal/slang words, so I doubt whether you would find either in an American dictionary.) What do they call you guys from Colorado Springs? ---------- SG (2) |

Hi vik - I just did a quick Web search of "Scouse" and turned up --They might be helpful! However, a similar search on "Git" failed to find anything useful - try an on-line dictionary. SG(2) and myself met at the Bridge table and have since become firm friends - I corrupted SG(2) into the horrors of computer gaming and he quickly became a Civ fanatic and that, in turn, made me return to this wonderful game after quite some time away. ------------------ ____________ Scouse Git[1] "CARTAGO DELENDA EST" - Cato the Censor |

Ok, being Canadian, I can probably bridge the language gap between the brits and the yanks (I spell colour with a u, but favorite without - I don't know why, I just do). I would translate "you stupid git", an expression I've heard on many english comedies, to simply "you idiot" in american.Vik, I doubt there's anyone left who's actively working on the previous OCC scenario (it's been over 2 weeks now). I'd encourage you to post it now. |

We and the media/ads people call this place the 'Springs' since there are no larger cities with Springs in the name. Informally, this area is called 'Silicon Mountain'.As for us locals? Don't think there's a name (don't say Springers ). BTW vik, whatcha do here? |

Been here since the late 1980s and I've seen it grow from 250,000 to 500,000. I live in Cheyenne Meadows. For those know the Front Range of Colorado, we are having one of those typical spring weather: sun, wind, rain, snow - all in the same day. |

Great game, I loved the Capt. Ahab & the whales and named my city Nantucket after the famous local whaling island. My personal best OCC finish - landed 1877 but I didn't keep a log. Had a great start - Monarchy the 2nd science I got to research, got 3 trade routes to Athens early before they turned vicious. Got a fair amount of gift money from allies English and Canadians. Couldn't get Americans to ally, they always wanted me to war on English. I gave away a fair amount of tech, but maybe not enough. I went for Miniaturization (for Offshore Platform) early instead of Computer, thinking I'd need many more freights than normal. I did use the freights - 15 extra for 1 per SS Structural since I didn't go for 80 shields per turn. And then 2 freights per SS Module + getting 60 shields, and bought the 3 Components, so I did wind up building the ship in minimum time. But my science was slower because of neglecting Computer in favor of Miniaturization so maybe that wasn't the best choice. Missed Darwin's for the first time, but it didn't hurt much. Only got one polluted square, but it takes a long time for a lowly settler to clean it. Never even built a Manufacturing Plant, but I did build supermarket (little benefit) and superhighways (definitely worth it). | |
