First of all I want to say thanks to everyone who participates in this. I don't have time to play much and I live vicariously through your logs and I learn through the table Paul takes the time to post on his site. I was wondering if folks might not mind throwing what version they're using into the log, as well. Thanks either way and please keep it up. |

You'll have an easier time with v242, and I think most of us here use that version. With Multiplayer Gold, the AIs are a lot less friendly. So instead of being able to ally with all the AI civs (like I managed in this game), you'll be lucky to not have them all at war with you. |

No prize for me ... seems I share the booby with Smash - good company anyway Just read the thread more carefully, Well done, Tom! I had estimated Paul's 1725 landing, but never expected it to be substantially trimmed. v2.42 - deity 1863 landing - guess that's no banana! I simply cannot instill sufficient urgency into my middle game - the medieval period drags on forever - I shall have to force myself to research in 5 at a loss rather than 6 at a gain. Ok. As I said a while ao I had a good start. But the problem with Good Starts is that they are an invitation for stupidity. I'm not entirely sure where I went wrong, but I didn't get to old AC 'till 1779. Ought to have been a lot earlier. And without further ado, the log.First, as has become custom, my key stats for the table: AC Landing: 1779 Mon: 2850 BC Repub: 1050 BC Demo: 225 AD Col: 2150 BC Copes: 600 BC Shakes: 225 AD Newtons: 320 AD Darwin: 840 AD Apollo: 1440 AD First Trade: 1200 BC Second: 1200 BC Third: 1150 BC Turns: I don't know Size 12: 825 BC Size 21: 540 AD Now, from looking at the highlights other than the landing date you'd have thought I'd done well. I wanted to have more alliances, I never built a stock exchange, I forgot about manufacturing plants and so on. What should I remember not to do next time? Anyway, this was a good one, I enjoyed it, but as I've said I was dissapointed. Graag ------------------ You should never smoke in pyjamas, you could start a fire and burn your face

Well, Graag, you certainly got to Space Flight quickly. You just didn't have the 80 production needed to get the space ship out the door. I had a similar problem, but was slightly ahead of the game, having researched robotics before space flight. Paul was able to get to AC 40 turns after discovering space flight, which is the fastest possible. It took me 49, and it took you something like 60. Otherwise, great game. You got the caravans out the door very early. |

Table updated. And Tom was right. If you had built a third engineer and a manufacturing plant you might even have beaten him to AC. The difference between 1705 and 1779 may look big but it is only 13 turns. [This message has been edited by Paul (edited May 06, 2000).] |

Well! Took forever to find the other civs due to a hut barbarian killing my trireme's chariot and my first contact, the Vikings, got destroyed by elusive Mongol barbarians. Aurelius—I transformed the wheat, but I did it late in the game after I’d grown my city. The extra arrows kept me at a tech every two turns after colossus expired. By then I could stand a food deficit. |

I'm becoming more and more convinced that luck plays a huge part in OCC. As you can see from my log I was very lucky, I got no barbs from huts, lots of units early and a nomad almost straight away. I haven't really looked at other people's logs much but som people seemed to get really messed up in the all improatant early game by bad luck with huts. I think hut luck is a bit too important in OCC, so may I suggest an OCC comparison game where there are no huts. I'm not sure if you can do this in the scenario editor, but you could make a rule that you cannot pop any huts. It might be fun to give you an advanced unit or two to start with to make up for no huts, say 2 NONE armors or something. I think with no huts we would see landing dates a lot closer together, and the true champion of OCC would emerge (although I did well I don't consider myself that great at it).Graag ------------------ You should never smoke in pyjamas, you could start a fire and burn your face

Well, I don't think there is much doubt that Paul is the champion of OCC. So removing huts would pretty much assure him victory. That said, I would agree that removing huts would provide a closer comparison game. I would go one step further and make the entire map visible at the start. Finding AI civs involves some luck while exploring. I don't think we would need two armor to start. A couple of horsemen or chariots would be enough. |

Luck? Sure, unless the game is reloaded after a bad hut...? I like the idea of removing huts for a better comparison. What I am saying, I don't even know how to play OCC. Sorry to intrude |

Tom, I agree on all accounts. Early contact is also way too important in OCC consdiering a lot of it is luck (again I got some good early contact in this game). I think a totally visible map with no huts would make a great comparison game, and Paul's place as king of OCC could be confirmed. I also agree the armors are unneccessary, I just thought they could be a bit of fun. Nothing to do with the comparison game really.Graag ------------------ You should never smoke in pyjamas, you could start a fire and burn your face

I know what you are saying.Too many techs before Monarchy and you might as well hit restart.Barbs kill all your explorers just as you start the Collosus...etc But that is a big part of OCC.Do I guard that hut till Monarchy?Do I build some roads first and hope to get some nons. These seemingly small decisions have a huge effect on the final outcome.Originally, the fortnight proposal was to play maps rather than sites. Now it ain't much fun wandering around, not finding a spot till 1000bc and find out it is 2 squares from Rome But,maybe a map with several spots with differing special combos fairly close by. Or even revealing several spots. The player could decide which one looks best to them.Factors such as "How long is it gonna take to get there?".Will I have to cross unfriendly territory?""Is that extra whale worth an extra 500 years of wandering" Or variations like no Shake's.No Ike's or,yes no huts.Or a map loaded with spots and you are on your own [This message has been edited by Smash (edited February 24, 2000).] |

Hoss, My food box was always low in this game. I made a mistake of selling the granary at the onset of WLTCD to afford a growth improvement-aqueduct. I never realized that as the food box got bigger the food in the box got smaller and without a granary, it will fall below half during WLTCD growth. One of my many mistakes in this game. (I don't like building a granary in the first place!)But concerning terraforming the Wheat to Silk, I really wondered about what is most important, getting the extra 2 citizens during pre size 20 City or all the trade with the multipliers? That River Silk might be valuable. But in this hilly game, food was probably essential. By the way Hoss, nice score. You obviously have studied hard--though your hut science was most enviable. I take it you like OCC. Have you tried MP yet? What other games do you play? AU |

Graag, I think managing luck is important or should I say minimizing bad luck is important. One thing about this competition, Paul seems to do well with or without good luck. But don't take those huts away! I always feel a bit of a thrill when spinning the wheel. In my game, when my Chariot left the boat for the wood hut, it knew it was 20 tiles from home and the only emmisary of our civilization....should NEVER have risked it! And as some have said, there are moments to guard the hut for later. I little further away was MWHC or NGMAABTAMS for Never Gave me an Alliance but took all my science. I should have stayed in the boat and said hello early on. When you do look at Paul's and Tom's logs, you see some good moves that demonstrate their OCC skills. I like that Tom built some early frieght with the boat. They both sold their coliseums after size 12. Lots of gold in those logs suggesting good diplomacy. When I think back, I had a great start and could have insured a better end. Should have given the Vikings Bronze ! AU |

AU, as far as huts go, I used my horse to go out and find huts right from the start (with my ship scouting the coastlines to help find them). All total I opened up five or six more than you, and yes I was lucky with the techs, but even better luck was getting two nomads. In the long run, though I think the hut hunting hurt me a bit since I was looking for huts instead of other civs. I noticed that Tom and Paul opened up quite a few less than me and it didn’t seem to hurt them.I don’t think that I can play MP. I have v2.42(?) and I don’t think you can do it with that version. Anyway, my schedule is quite erratic at this time and I don’t see how I could convince someone to play when I’m available. Other games? I played Age of Empires a bit and for awhile I was into Railroad Tycoon, but I’m not much of a game player. I always liked strategy/dominate the world games, and back in the days before computers I couldn’t get enough of Stratego and Risk. I guess that’s what drew me to CIV. Concerning the extra citizens vs extra trade, I’m probably not the one to answer since I wasn’t smart enough to even build a collosseum to allow for faster growth without Shakespeare. I too would be interested in what others think.

To answer the river silk question. I did a little comparison during my game when I was trying to decide whether to convert the wheat over or not. I switched to 100% science, and then removed the worker from the already existing silk (in the top right corner). Something like 30 science lost. I then turned two scientists to two entertainers. Something like 40 science was lost. I therefore concluded that the extra food from the wheat contributed more science than the silk would. Why didn't I then immediately convert the top right silk to wheat? I didn't think of it.I didn't think to convert the wheat over nearer the end of the game either. I had a 1 food deficit already, but I could have handled a larger deficit when I was making my run for space flight. Live and learn. |

Hey Tom,Thanks for that engineering. I guess with double irrigated wheat, there is no question that the food is better than the trade concerning Wheat vs Silk. I just did some similar tests and understand your take. Maybe Wine is better than wheat... if you speedsters have the time ! Early on, when population is limited by aqueduct, the silk is probably superior to the wheat...though quickly growing from size 1 to 2 is probably crucial in this one settler competition. The race to Monarchy and Trade might override food or city size--I've been assuming such. AU--Hoss, so you're another Risk fan! Ever play World dominating Diplomacy? Folks, I have prepared a map/scenario for the OCC Fortnight Competition #4. Reading the top of page two of this thread, I believe this map will offer you what you are looking for. This map has no huts, and I've engineered it so that contact with the other Civs will be sped up. There are a handful of decent starting sites not far away from your settlers. If you would like to use it, let me know whom to give it to and how to give it. |

SG - no worry there, I'll be behind you no doubt. I thought I would have this game done last weekend but I was busy and only finished last night. I don't have any highlights prepared (sorry) but I did get a NON settler. The AI didn't encroach on my territory fro most of the game but unfortunately I had two huge barb uprisings on my west coast and they destroyed my mine on the coal and irrigation on the wheat several times. This messed up my structurals production as it took me below 80 shields. I finally got to AC on the eve of the 20th century, 1899. I hate when I do that!!! I just wrote a long explanation of why I didn't land until 1980 and instead of hitting send I closed my internet connection. Okay so now the abbreviated version... I wanted to see how many huts I could get and how tough I could make getting Monarchy even while following the regular direct research path to it. The answer is really tough. I popped some huts and got some techs and some units (which made me supreme) and ran around contacting the AI. This was in MGE, but I made the map for crying out loud, and even though I waited a good while, I still had a basic idea of how it was laid out. So there I am trying to trade techs to get an alliance with hostile AIs and I keep running out of techs before I get them up to worshipful. Long story short - by being supreme you really hurt your abiltiy in MGE to get alliances, that in turn allows the AI to attack you without the repurcussion of another AI coming to your aid. I ended up fighting everyone the entire game. I lost track of how may settlers/engineers got killed, but I think it was more than 15. With all of those techs from huts, I didn't get Monarchy until 600bc and Republic in around 1000ad. I lost a couple hundred j/k city defenders to Zulu Battleships. The Zulu's and the Romans ended up as the dominant civs, only the Americans survived at all. The Zulu's had a spy show up on my doorstep while they were building their ship and they demanded 1000g which I gave to them to get a ceasefire and block their spy from getting fusion, they launched a minimal ship the next turn, but without fusion. I launched three turns later and beat them to AC. The Romans were losing cities left and right to the Zulus by this time and couldn't get their ship completed in time... More to follow. |

Sten - sounds tough. It's really funny to see how the AIs develop in different games. In mine there was no real dominant power, the Aztecs Americans and Vikings were all about equal in size and power. The Mongols were surprisingly weak, sandwiched between Romans and Vikes and the Aztecs occasionally harassed them too. The Zulus had one city and the Romans 4 (but 2 were tiny <4). The Americans & Aztecs shared 4 of the top 5 city spots. The AIs really didn't give me any trouble at all, and they only got up to RR and Metallurgy because I gave them away.I joined quite a few wars for gold. I don't usually do this but I was isolated enough that being in a war with the Romans didn't mean much except that they hated me more than usual . Why did you give up the 1000g instead of just wasting the spy? ------------------ Will everyone stop bloody quoting everyone else in their signature damnit. - Graag |

I didn't waste the spy because the freaking bully Zulu battleship(s) had killed all of my military units. I tried to run her over with a camel but she dove out of the way! The other thing I did that was interesting, but stupid, was I landed a horse next to a vik settler very early which was also next to Trondheim. They requested to trade for Bronze and I thought, hey! they might just be defended with a warrior. So I traded with them and then crushed them. They never reappeared and that let the Romans expand too much. The hit to my rep probably didn't help me get alliances. IIRC when I made the first map I got killed off in 1000bc, now I squeek into AC in 1980... I think I'll let others do the maps from now on. Oh Sten, The sun is shining today. You'll make another map for us. Maybe without a useless port :|I don't know how you folks are making all these funny faces. So the next competition begins! |

what sun??? not over here in Jerry Brown land. rain, rain, rain. That useless port thing made me mad, that was certainly not my plan. I also thought that with the turn in it the AI would have difficulty getting ships in there - not so! Others have made comments about the open tech path... I am not sure what that is refering to, I didn't change anything about the techs... Aurelius - you can check out how someone wrote something by acting like you are going to edit their post... it will show you what they really typed, you just can't change it. ...later: okay there is the sun!!! I can actually see Oakland from my window. There are puffy, non-threatening clouds overhead. I don't have the Haight Street Camcorder working right now, but it looks nice enough given the weeks of rain we've endured. Oh, I think the open tech path refers to being able to research any tech given the supporting prerequisite techs....ie you get CoL and CB and Alpha you will always have the choice of Monarchy in your next advance choices. Sometimes it doesn't happen that way.....but I'm just guessing. Okay you two, stop about SF. I'm jealous, the only time my town played a lead role in a movie they filmed it somewhere else Seriously, why kill off the Vikings early in the game? It only will get you less trib/gifts later on. |

amazing what school will do to your time. Took me over 3 weeks to finish this one. Still haven't even looked at OCC #17 yet and #18 is due to make a showing soon. Anyway, This one was frustrating not having a second settler. Since we had 4 usable as is specials, I kept delaying and delaying building a settler too. Never did build it until i was in Republic and size 4... Looking back, that was probably way too late - Once the colossus was built I should have built one since i was already size 3 and could have grown back to 3 fairly quickly since i would have had 2 wheat to work with... Tom got a nomad?!?!? no wonder he was so far ahead of everyone else. Having the starting trireme was a mixed blessing. I could explore and deliver trade more efficiently, but i also put off building better ships (never did build one, although bribed a transport during the SS construction - of course i was out of freights to deliver by then) and i missed out on a couple demanded trade routes due to the slowness of the trireme. Was kind of funny having a nuclear powered trireme though As usual, I took too much time building extra engineers post refrigeration and it cost me famines when i had to abandon producing grasslands from hills too soon to get production up to 80+... Wound up with nearly 90 production and 4 of 6 engineers dead of famine and less trade than i could have had with all the farmland hills instead of farmland grasslands. I was 1 round too late to save the 3rd and could have saved the 4th by teraforming a plains instead of a hill early on. Having those 2 engineers would have saved me at least 2 turns on the spaceship, if nothing else than just to disband towards them, and i could have had a slightly higher income as well. I had to delay 1 structural by 1 turn simply because i needed something like 5 more gold. I suppose the long time it took to play the game also factored in, since even with the log, i didn't keep track of my thought processes as to when i wanted to do which things. Two interesting things i never really figured out were: why did we have that visible city-sized open area off to the north and why were we unable to build our own naval units? Anyway, maybe I'll get to start #17 or #18 this week. OCC #03 Deity MGENo less than 13 advances came to us in a single turn each, around the discoveries of Automobile and Computers. A unicum, to which the AI tribes contributed by researching Polytheism, Monotheism, Theology and Genetic Engineering, thus giving us a technology bonus. (But not much money in the form of gifts, as we were afraid of getting those horrible techs ). With the good start, too (early N-Settlers, I love forests ), we could hardly miss a fine landing date. ================================================================ AC: 1476 Monarchy: -3050
