It was a personal best for me, despite the mediocre score. After Astronomy, I experienced a craven fear of losing the tech lead before getting Copernicus. So I got to develop a lot of crummy tech. And the whole area from Shakepeare to Newton is a mess. But I did have fun crushing the English with my piddly army while waiting for the apaceship to arrive. I thought it was a good idea to not rushbuild Colossus at the first opportunity so as to have enough cash to build caravans and improvements in 2 turns each. I wonder if that is so. I also bribed a lot of enemy caravans, which I think helped - I was never short of gold in this game. Most caravan bribes lost money, but there was always a net beaker gain. I wonder if that is a viable strategy. Awaiting comments, ------------------ --grigor |

Aurelius,I experimented with WLTKD, but found that with a small city (4-5) there was no gain or a slight loss. But I didn't try it on a map with 2 wine, which could really make a difference. |

After reading through the logs, there are a few things I dont understand. (I.e., OCC stupid newbie questions.) 1. How do people get away with selling sewers? Does growth stop at 21? Does this mean you can also sell the aquaduct? 2. Why sell the temple or colossuem while still in Republic but before Shakespeare? Are people spending on luxuries to cover unhappiness? This implies foregone science. 3. What are the mechanics (ie, what screens, what options) of extracting gifts from allies ? (When I play Civ straight up, I never have "entangling foreign alliances".) Thanks for the enlightenment. ------------------ "I fear that I shall die a Prince." -Edward VII, Prince of Wales |

Hi Adam, Usually just before completing Shakes, the One City size is 12 and the luxuries tax is required to be at 10 or 20 % depending on the allocation of orange thingys and the presence of a bank. Luxuries at 20% is usually over kill and selling off a temple early can't hurt and it raises more cash and saves a penny in maintenance. Selling a Coliseum at the turn of completion doesn't hurt due to Shakes taking affect. So if you time your money and the selling of the two happiness improvements just right, you can rush buy shakes faster and save luxury tax towards science and tax in subsequent turns.
Concerning selling aqueducts and sewers, I usually forget to sell them I think it's a bad mistake as a Sewer cost 4 gd upkeep per turn. Usually the One City grows to it's maxed out food level--midtwenties. The purpose of the game is to get to Alpha as soon as possible so population is just a means of accomplishing the goal --neccessary science and tax and shield production to get a ship to Alpha. The score is irrelevant or a sideshow.... Sound like good questions to me. OCC is a game of alternating extortion/appeasement. But you want to be worshipfully allied early on. I'm still trying to balance science giveaway with recieving plentiful monetary gifts--not to mention avoiding developing redundant tech. AU--See ya on Alpha.

Hey don Don,You probably want to have a library on hand to maximize the republic trade. And of course, ya need a marketplace. Seems like the loss of pennies due to a lower tax rate during this science stint is easily compensated by trib/gifts. I had a game today that involved spice and two whales and the WLTKD seemed to give a boost to science. It might help getting Republic or Philosophy a year earlier. Of course, I was saddened when the Babylonians got Copernicus built before us Sioux. AU |

I edited in the remainder of my log...Adam - In the MGE version I found it beneficial to save up four techs before contacting the AI so I could gift them up to enthusiastic, trade maps and get an alliance, then request a gift back. The following turn they will be back to uncooperative, so wait until you are back to a decent tech advantage before contacting them again. Also make sure you rush-buy the most expensive thing you can before you make contact so your cash position appears low. |

Sten - I use MGE. You still beat me by 30some years though. My main problem now (now that I've solved my trade problem) is getting my population bigger earlier, I was one of the last to size 21. |

crow - the big differences in our logs, I think, are the alliances that I got and was able to keep - like the English. I noticed that they broke peace with you right away and I had them on my side the entire game. I wonder why - ??? I think my diplomacy style is improving, but I haven't played enough to know if I just got lucky or if my contact pattern works. |

My diplomacy style is usually: demand gold in the early game, occasionally demand gold later (if I know they're weak and/or far away). I'll give away any tech when the AI demands it unless it's a wonder I'm working on. I'll also give away 3-4 techs at a time to get maps and I often give away tech to the weakest AIs in the hope that they might harrass the stronger ones (but I don't know if that works or not). I never give money but I might change that rule based on some of the successes I've read about in the logs. Your idea of building Darwins later on in the game is an interesting one, I think I'll look into it in my next OCC games. |

Glad to see this thread at page 2. Page 1 is over 200k, which takes a while to load at modem speeds.I've tried this map again a couple of times to see how I'd do if I knew where the other civs were from the get go. I'm pleased to say I managed a 1625 landingon my third attempt, two turns before Paul's. This gives me hope that given some luck (and some bad luck for Paul) someone else might win one of these fortnight competitions. Here is my abreviated log for my regame: 2850 BC - Construction 2600 BC - Trade 2250 BC - Colossus 1450 BC - formed Republic 950 BC - size 12 850 BC - 1st trade route 800 BC - 2nd trade route 775 BC - 3rd trade route 750 BC - Copernicus' Observatory 700 BC - Sanitation 625 BC - Shakespeare's Theatre 350 BC - size 21 125 BC - Isaac Newton's College 25 BC - Democracy 260 AD - Refrigeration 400 AD - Darwin's Voyage 620 AD - Automobile 880 AD - Computers 1220 AD - Space Flight 1240 AD - Apollo Program 1610 AD - Launch 1625 AD - Landing I found the AIs to be real research wimps this game. I kept giving all my tech away so the AIs would be researching something I didn't have. They developed about 5 techs amongs't them all game. Saved a couple of turns though on my rush to Space Flight when the English suddenly developed Monotheism and the Aztecs Gerilla Warfare. When I wasn't given a Space Flight prerequisite to research I was able to choose one of these. Trading with the AI that turn, I was right back on the road to Space Flight without loosing precious time. |

Not a whole lot to say on this game (now watch me write a disertation ). Great starting spot. Availability for techs to research was the biggest hold up - and i could have made some better choices along the way if i had remembered that would b e a problem earlier. For example, I bypassed flight several times, and I think it may have cost me 2 turns, since i got fusion power very early. I was stuck researching several of post-space flight techs pre-flight, and i was still able to easily get 2 turn techs while building the space ship, while buying modules outright. I had 8 freights, and didn't use a single 1, still built the ship in minimum time. I also held off researching literacy once and that delayed republic by 2 techs, when techs were slow in coming. That one error there was probably more than the 5 turns that Paul beat me by. As usual, I had to research feudalism, chivalry and leadership - haven't looked yet but I bet others were able to trade for those. I somehow managed to ally with 5 of the AI's this game, keeping 4 throughout (took me a while to make contact with a couple AI), and never was attacked by anything other than stray barb units, who never got close to the city (helped having all those starting units ) With all the mountains, i was able to dictate what terrain the barbs fought upon for the most part. Always had way too much gold because of it, and was able to buy all sorts of structures with greater ease. I just now realized i never sold my sewer system or aquaduct - i was never even close needing to do that.
