500 AD. President Julius decides of the building of triremes to trade with foreign nations. Horsemen recruited to end Zulu threat. 520 AD Issus destroyed by Zulus. Zulu horsemen then killed. 580 AD President J questionnable plan of trading with other nations was put to a severe test by the sinking of a trireme with 2 caravans on board near Ngome. As the elecetions were right after tragedy, President J did not even to dare to run for reelection. In a last pathetic tentative to enter the books of history, the city of Singing Bird was also founded. |

Ribannah, “on ne vit qu’une seule fois” (one can only live once). I took pity of all those little ICS citizen that had no fun at all in their whole existence and decided to gave them some luxuries to soften their lives. More seriously, I loaded the game, looked at the production and decided on my failed foreign trade plan. I did not notice the luxuries were already at 40%. I think Toth did it to boost population. Now I recall that I had some "WLTPD ends" messages. Sorry for my mistake, but “ma tête était dans les étoiles”. Luckily, I only played 5 turns. Shame on me ! I lost beakers, caravans and a city. I’m definitely no candidate for Player of the Month !------------------ Oh Man, when will you understand that your greatness lies in your failure - Goethe |

My new sig just about says it all - thanks Hueij. I've played in nearly every succession game and have found several things - amongst them:- we can all play like absolute plonkers on occasion;
- there is always something new to be learned;
- it's amazing what you can do in a few turns with complete focus
and I feel that these encompass all that is good (and bad) about succession games.------------------ Scouse Git[1] "Staring at your screen in horror and disbelief when you open a saved game is one of the fun things of a succession game " - Hueij "The Great Library must be built!" My first succession game, too, Roman When Lady Ribannah returned to power, she could not believe her eyes. So much had changed! The Sioux had really flourished during her long-time absence. They also had erected a great statue in her honor, as a sign that they had never forgotten her great leadership in the past. But is was, again, time for decisions. Consul Ribannah decreed that from now on, the cities at the ocean would house the scientists, since the air would do them much good. The land-locked cities would once more start building Settlers, and it was ordered that a great many Granaries should be built fast to store the necessary food. Then, she turned her attention abroad. Peace was made with the nearby Zulus, and the art of Seafaring was learned from the Aztecs - for a price. Several foreign cities were sighted, and caravans were sent on their way to set up foreign trade relations. Even the Barbarians in the former Chinese cities would be an option, seeing they were in need of goods we could produce. As her final act before a well-deserved vacation, Consul Ribannah ordered the scientists to research even more seafaring technology, starting with the art of Navigation. 720 AD Chased some evil scientists into the forests 740 AD Order restored in many cities, built 1 Granary, 1 Caravan, 1 Settlers 760 AD Built 1 Caravan ----- Germans meet Persians, make love not war, lots of techs exchanged 780 AD Built 3 Settlers and 2 Caravans, New Sorpigal founded on island ----- Zulus offer Peace - we accept and get 100 tribute , Greeks discover Feudalism 800 AD Astronomy discovered, Seafaring is next ----- 1 Caravan added to Leo's, 1 Temple sold 820 AD Built 1 Settlers 840 AD Built 1 Granary and 1 Caravan, sold 1 Temple ----- Gave Invention and Banking to Aztecs, then traded University for Seafaring ----- Russians start Leo's - we'll beat them yet 860 AD Now researching Navigation; built 1 Settlers Edit: Zipped save sent to DaveV and kcbob ------------------ If you have no feet, don't walk on fire [This message has been edited by Ribannah (edited March 01, 2001).] |

Lighning strikes twice ? To the real business at hand. I made it through 5 turns without starving any size 5 cities, a major accomplishment for me. I had to end my turn abruptly, so city adjustments need to be made. 860 Sell granaries, rush a couple caravans 880 Germans, Aztecs sign peace treaty 900 Russians, Persians sign peace treaty. Zulus demand we withdraw horsemen near Hlobane, we comply. Germans develop Medicine, start Shakespeare's. Germans trade Medicine to Russians for Astronomy. Germans, Russians sign peace treaty. Aztecs complete Sun Tzu's - Arrrrrgh!!! 920 Zulus develop University. We discover Navigation, Gunpowder next. We build Leo's, Russians switch from Leo's to Cope's. 940 Turin founded. 960 Greeks capture Shanghai from barbs. We build Copernicus.

As the fifth millennium neared its end, a new czar rose to power in the great nation of the Sioux. His name was kcbobvarich and his dream was of a great army. To that end, he ordered the building of warriors in many of the cities in anticipation of the discovery of Gunpowder. He also tried his hand at diplomacy with mixed results. 50 gold was obtained from the Zulus while every other nation in the world declared war against us. You win a few, you lose a few. Genoa was founded and the age old desire of the nation was again awakened… Incredible Communist Success. Genoa was followed by Crete as the new millennium dawned. And then, as if in answer to our atheistic supplications, the city of Little Big Horn built a wonder that would ensure our supremacy on the high seas. Long live comrade Magellan! Verona was founded, Gunpowder discovered, our warriors magically transformed into valiant musketeers. Physics was chosen as our next research subject with an eye towards the iron horse and that champion of the masses, Charles Darwin. In his last few days, kcbobvarich founded Salamis and Lisbon and made peace with the Germans, Persians, and Greeks, all the while sending out diplomats to spy out their lands. Such are the ways of the evil empire of the communist Sioux, heh, heh, heh.Now to send to John-SJ and Roman. ------------------ Frodo lives! |

Turn received and played.As I enter the great tribal council of our great nation I see that we are thriving in every way. We have a well run economy, our scientists are making rapid progress, and our trade, both internal and external is going well. The majority of our tribal production is either caravans or settlers. One exception was Little Big Horn which was building A.S. Trading Co. Me, being somewhat of a perfectionist living in an ICS world proclaimed that A.S. would have to wait, LBH is our largest scientific research center, but only houses a Library for our researchers. What LBH really needs is a University. Work on A.S. can resume once the university is complete. Overall, progress has been good but there was one disappointment. Our long range science goal was to research Railroad so that we could build Darwin's Voyage and further enhance our science advantage. Unfortunately, when Physics was discovered the only choices were for Theory of Gravity, Medicine, and Feudalism. Our dream of an overwhelming military force is yet to be realized, but that goal can be obtained quickly as we have many cities and much production potential. Now, on to the future! 1060 - Aztecs, Gave Navigation, Cease Fire, Peace 1080 - The Russians have completed Shakespeare's Theatre. 1100 - Little Big Horn builds University (rush) - Next A.S. Trading Co. The Russians have just started building this as well so the race is on! 1140 - Discovered Physics, now researching Theory of Gravity. Now forwarding to Roman. CCs to thoth and kcbob. |

And so it happened that following John's death, Roman outmaneuvered all of his Politburo opponents and became the General Secretary of the Sioux Communist Party ready to serve the masses and save the workers. In celebration of his victory the proletariat found two new cities, all competing to be granted the title Romancity. Being true to socialist ideals, though, Roman declined this honour and instead let them be called Hamburg and Prague. Immediately on assuming power Roman set out to build the communist society. Leonardo's Workshop built by his predecessors helped arm the workers in anticipation of the coming world revolution. The warriors built in our cities were converted to muskateers... Meanwhile, however, the Politburo decided that trade with the capitalist, imperialist nations will serve us well until we are ready for the unification of the world's proletariat. Therefore, caravans were sent on caravels accross the great sea to establish trade routes with the Zulu and Aztec Empires. To educate the burgoise population how to be good communists, prior to establishing the true form of communism, Roman had to resort to governing in the name of the people in this preparatory stage. The socialist dictatorship of the proletariat he had set up, then started the reeducation program and the transformation of the society into a socialist one. The peasantry was collectivized and the Kulaks and other hostile peasants were sent to labour camps. The burgoisie resisting this progressive form oof government was also deported. These labour camps proved invaluable to our country as the labourers (read caravans) were used to build two great projects in Little Bighorn. Both the Central Planning Agency (read Adam Smith Corporation) and the Issac Newton College were built under Roman's Tutelage. Our flourishing revolution also brought scientific progress. Theory of Gravity was discovered and Steam Engine is being researched so that we can someday learn how to build railroads. The research now also only takes 5 turns down from six at the beginning of Roman's oversight over the revolution. The Politburo, however, grew jelous of Roman's enormous success and therefore Roman had to flee to exile. A new leader was than picked from among the ranks of the faithfull, which the Politburo will undaubtably also replace if he growth too powerful for their liking. |

Sorry for the delay in playing my turns....a couple too many glasses of "Chateau de Beaver Dam" last night. 1320: After a brief period of political infighting, a new leader takes the helm: Komrade Thoth.
1360: Our scientists discover the secrets of Steam Engine. We begin reasearch on Railroad. Little Bighorn begins to build The Effiel Tower in the expectation that a fellow named Darwin will soon wish to make a Voyage. 1380: Salzburg founded. 1400: Bergen founded. Chemistry obtained from Germans in exchange for Invention, Seafaring and Navigation. 1420: Trade Steam Engine to Aztecs for Metallurgy. Caravan from Wood Lake to Tlataleco, Dye, demanded: 144 Spice from Silver Moon to Tenochtitlan: 121 Wool from Stoney lake to Tenochtitlan: 127 Libraries in Bear Paw and Wood Lake completed. 1440: Russians and Aztecs begin Eiffel Tower. Zulus offer us 100g for a peace treaty. Accepted. The reactionary Aztecs have sneak attacked us. The progressive scientists of the United Soviet Sioux Republics discover Railroad, Little Bighorn changed to Darwin's voyage. Our researchers turn their efforts towards Explosives. The mantle of leadership is passed on. (Rumours of assasinations will likely be denied by the new regime) |

1440 AD. Comrade Brenzaidovich declares he only has one goal. To free the world from evil capitalism. Such a noble cause justifies any means. Chivalry is stolen from the Greeks. They declare war. 1460 AD Feudalism stolen from the Russians. All was well planified but all was slow. After 4 turns nothing else had happened. Then on the very last moment (1510 AD that is) we got sneak attacked by the Zulus, were raided by Barbarians near Salamis – the city will be lost next turn – and then learned that Zulus had discovered Conscription. On the positive side, we discovered Explosives the same year and as science is only a tool for the power of freedom we went for direction. A Zulu catapult was destroyed. Mpondo was captured by a diplomat. It was a bit expensive, but Propaganda always pays in the end. Everybody now knows nobody should dare to sneak attack us. What’s more still on the same last turn, 3 caravans arrived in Tenochlitan, filling back the coffers. The city of Lost Island was also founded. What a last turn ! |

SG: "1580 - Bapedi (Aztec) falls (178g) to Ironclad/Cavalry. With several cities "Xinning" tech rate is 3. It's time for Ribannah to lead the Presidium."OK, I gotta ask, what is "xinning"? John-SJ

'Xinning' is the term we use to denote following the 'Size 5 Strategy' expounded by Xin Yu (hence the name) in which every worker in a city of size 5 (or greater) is converted to a specialist - although this leads to much hunger as long as there is a single sheaf in the food box no loss of population occurs so on the next turn sufficient workers are returned to the fields to put a few sheaves in the box and the process repeated - at the expense of a few turns of loss of growth some remarkable scientific advances can be achieved ... See also a related thread by La Fayette called 'SSC = Starving Silicon City' which IMHO did not recieve half as much attention as it deserved.Good civin' [edit to correctly accredit La Fayette] Scouse Git[1] "Staring at your screen in horror and disbelief when you open a saved game is one of the fun things of a succession game " - Hueij "The Great Library must be built!"
