You'll have to make up your own mind on that, otherwise we'll have ourselves, yet again, another riveting "It sucks!--it rocks!--it sucks!--it rocks!" species of argument. Still, the intellectually-challenged have seemed to dislike the game to an irrational degree.

I wrote a couple of articles for apolyton why CTP sucks, here's a summary:
- Activision gave the shaft to their playtesters and released a buggy game, took forever to patch it, and has moved onto the sequel before finishing CTP 1.
- The interface is a bastard, that is, if you ever played another Civ title, activision thought it would be best to change everything for the worst. Moves that used to require 1 click now require about 3-5
- The AI is Dumb, and not just slightly impaired, but real stupid.
- There is no diplomacy, only war and have not discovered thee yet.
- The art is uh, different, and the more I think about it the more I hate the polished look of many the units, they look as if they have been covered with chrome, and the movement gets on my flipping nerves
- The pathing is awful, and why not? Everybody wants their units walking over mountains and have it so the unit cannot be stopped once a mistaken click is made. Of course activision assumes that a player will always move a unit if he or she clicks on it.
There are many more, but I will tell you I have spent at least 15 hours with the game only to walk away from my empires before victory. I've reached all the way into the space age and said "screw it." The will is just not there for the "just one more turn" like the previous civ titles.

Well, I have been reading these forums for quite some time now and this is my first post. Really exciting But to the point now. I bought CTP the moment it came out and I have been playing it ever since. To be honest I didn't liked it at first either (seems to be the same for everyone who's used to CIV 2 ). But you've got to give it a second chance eventhough you won't be seeing any fancy cityscreens floaded with gold, science or people. And if you are a TB strategie and simulation fan,CTP and CIV 2 are problably the best games available for the moment. And for those who are whining about the little sitbacks of the game, clearly the advantages don't weight up to the disadvantages or how do you say that in english.

I'm not going to go into this argument again, but I'll just say that I've had plenty of enjoyment out of CtP, and I haven't even tried any of the mods yet. There's plenty of things that could have been better, but it's still a good game.Play it on a friend's computer and see what you think. And try to find it cheap somewhere. - MKL |

I was actually thinking of asking the same question earlier today, and Lo i find someone beat me to it?!?!!? So the general concensus is that it's an ok game, but buggy as hell, isn't quite what it was claimed to be!! But if it's right for you, you can still get into it!!!So i don't think i'll spend £15 of my hard earned money on it!!!! does anyone think the sequel is going to be anything worth looking at? even though i haven't got a hope in hell of getting that one to run, i don't even know why i'm saying all this cause my p75 probably wouldn't even run CtP either way, i mean i could only just get SMAC to load after about 2 hours tweaking my ram with qemm, god i hate being suck in the 20th centruy?!?!?!? ****!!! sorry guys, i'm drivelling again?!?! take me out to the barn like old yella' and put me out of my misery, by the way. Has any one read that book? is it as good as the film? argh!!!! |

Big Dave, your response is no more enlightened then theirs. Just because a game is being played by a number of people does NOT mean it's any good. Witness the 1,000,000+ copies sold of the Deer Hunter games (nearly all very low rated). You have to remember that alot of gamers here have and are still playing Civ2. CtP was an incomplete product and of inferior design. I mean, how many titles do you know where gamers had to create mod packs (or the like) just to play the game out of the box? I'm not talking about patches, I'm refering to changing design aspects to make it playable. No, people saying that CtP is bad do have very valid arguments. |

Steve, if you've been following these forums for any length of time you would already know that I have a number of complaints about CTP, not the least of which is that they didn't finish the game. Not just polish it, but get it out of beta. My gripes with AH and Veda are that they are no more than a couple of trolls screaming "CTP stinks!" every chance they get. No constructive criticism, no "I don't like this feature", just whine and complain and try to start flame wars. Big Dave |

I would look at *who* is playing the game, rather than just how many people are, and *why* they are playing the game. The guys I have worked with on the Med mods are all civ-series veterans who are very familiar with most of the Microprose games, and have years of playing experience. I received a note last week complimenting me on the Civ2 mod I sent in to Apolyton a couple of years ago. Anyway, if a bunch of people with extensive civ experience believe the game is better than the others, and spend a lot of time making mods for it, than I would probably pluck down $20 to try it out at least. (Just remember to try the Med pack before you give up on the game.) |

Have you even read anything else I've posted? Do you even know when the last time I played CTP was, oh all-knowing Horse? And are you truly so mentally handicapped you don't even realize when you've made a feeble attempt to start a flame war? I think not. Stoop to my level? You only wish you could reach such heights! If you have nothing better to do that post "CTP stinks" do it somewhere else. In another thread that was over 100 posts long you made exactly 3 posts stating in specific what you didn't like about CTP. When other posters attempted to address these issues you went back to flaming. That coupled with your little barb at the end of your "Are CTP players younger" thread has left you with no credibility whatsoever. So I say, flame on, Sir Gadfly, and don't whine when you have received the full measure of what you have asked for. Sincerly, Big Dave |

I wasn't going to come back in but I think a point needs to be made. AH did bring up a good analogy about the dud car. It is human nature to try to justify value of a purchase, regardless if the product is good or bad. This is true for gamers in the amount of effort that can be invested, not only in playing the game, but in the anticipation of it. CtP certainly falls in the anticipation idea since it follows very successful titles. Since a number of civers really wanted to improve upon Civ2 (hard to do, imo), they really wanted CtP to work. And reviewing a number of posts here, they still do. I am biased in that I think Civ2 is the ONLY good civ title (didn't play Civ1) for in the Strategy forum, we are still coming up with new challenges and new ideas, without any modpacks. |

I haven't played CTP since it became apparant that Activision wasn't going to fix it. And if I feel something is a bad value I'll tell others, but I'll tell them WHY it's a bad value. I activly discourage people from purchasing CTP because the game is not finished, I encourage people to not buy CTP2 until it's been out for 6 months and we can all see if Activision is going to correct their previous mistakes or just try to soak us for more cash. What more do you want from me?But I have had enough of certain pinheads performing their visceral mantra as if it means something. Either add something useful to the thread or prepare to get flamed. (Not directed at you, Steven) And if you have any questions about who AH is, well just search a little. You'll see he has a reputation on this board already if you look here. Even Markos had something nice to say. [This message has been edited by Big Dave (edited May 16, 2000).] |

I'm the 'almost-fifty' guy playin' CTP who finds it much more engaging than CivII...but I have no cents as I was gifted the game by my daughter 'cause she was hooked on AC...duh.When I first started to play CTP I found many things annoying (unit movement, for one) beside my shallow learning curve with new games and their cryptic interfaces...I learned about the Apolyton site and stepped up to the kool freshness of mods (huzza)...later I found Deiter's way-out civilogue on slavery and deity domination, and all the other forum brigades here abouts. CTP is in many ways a better game because of all the inputs it has received...it has been fortuitous, imo, that Activision lamed CTP to market...expectations were high and the tar baby caught us all, the hugh and tumult has made for at least more interesting forums... hell, (bad word) even the long-standing shriekers are still shuffling about, posting their phlegm (apparently imflammible to some) this is just another fine mess...no, really I'm glad none of you can overturn the board when you get real upset! |

Hi everybody! I'm relatively (?) new to this game (1 month or so) but still I find it better than Civ2 in some ways like:1. You can stack units together to make it a more powerful combo. This means that there is no more "Get best guy first and win" thing. 2. At last! a Civ game which lets you go in space! (I don't know for Civ1 ) When I was playing Civ2, I always wanted to continue and go colonize other planets or at LEAST go in space which CTP did (not for colonizing other planets ). 3. Subversive units! In Civ2, the game was all about getting the best military units. But now, some players can do much more damage with those stealthy slavers getting to all your citizens or those infectors, corporate branches or all those cool guys. It takes the game to a new level with rewards well someone who uses them. 4. Trading! I prefer by far the trading system of CTP. You can understand it much better and you don't have to write down which city the trade caravan I built 30 turns before had to go! 5. It's buggy! ... ... ... ... never mind that one . But of course, every game has a downfall (or LOTS of downfalls ):
1. It's BUGGY as hell! nothing pisses me more than playing a 5 hours game with 30 civs and me having the best citys by far cause of my slaving skillz and then BAM! game shuts down! 2. I don't find the water units "specialized" enought. I "think" I remember in Civ2 about 5 sorts of ships, each specialized for a specific task. 3. My friend once lost 3/4 of his new air fighter (unit you have in about mid-game to late-game) to a legion (VERY early-game) 4. Interface! Almost forgot about this one. Interface in Civ2 was MUCH better, you could see everything you needed in one window instead of 5 windows! Well that's all I found in the time I wrote this. To conclude this, CTP is a great game, you just have to forget about the bugs (yea right). Cya! |

Slight problem with this though - if nobody buys it, then we won't know if it's any good or not. We only know the limitations of CtP through the vast quantities of time invested by people playing it. Equally, this has led to the development of Mod's to improve and fix things. OK, I agree that the initial release version could have been better, but I think that it's a great addition to the Civ family (even if it is a bit like the uncle that people don't mention! ) and some things were definite improvements over CivII (as someone mentioned earlier, caravans were an ENORMOUS pain in CivII!). I will probably buy CtPII when it comes out (if I have any spare time to play, unlike at the moment!) Dan

Dan,
It's not the original release I'm complaining about. They didn't finish the game. I expect the initial release of any software to be, well, quirky at best and buggy at worst. With CTP1 you've got to have the 1.21 HACK, the Apolyton Pack (or at the very least CD's mod) or WesW's Med Mod, AND ModPicker, a VBA program written by yet another player. Now I really hate being on the same side of an issue with anyone who acts like a horses backside, but the above listed facts have really ticked me off. Big Dave
