AH,

hexagonian can come up with a several reasons why CTP is good but you can only come up with one bad reason? And the bad thing about CTP is its graphics???!! I seem to recall almost everyone praising CTP on its graphics... and since when has any civ game ever had sprites that were perfectly in proportion?

Come on AH, you can do better than that... the title of your thread states CTP: Is it the worst game of all time? Now you have to tell us why you think its the worst game ever... give us some concrete examples already....

Let's start with the player interface. It will send you blind.

Anything specific about the interface? I personally don't like how you can't see certain information when you have one tab clicked on. However I find that if you use the global city screen along side with the tabs it makes the interface far more usable.

The sprites are out of proportion...

At least I can tell what each sprite is supposed to be. The graphic definition is much clearer than TOT or CIVII. And lets face it, if the sprites were in proportion to the map, then you couldn't see your units in the first place. Its a game, not reality!

The fonts are too small...

What size monitor do you have? Personally, I have no trouble seeing the fonts on a 17" monitor. And, I dont have to count shields to get an indication of how my city is doing. From a info/playability standpoint, that seems more user-friendly.

CTP supports resolutions as low as 640x480. Try that resolution, the letters should be huge.

You can use Q,W,E,R,T to change the visible city tabs. Pressing the keys is easier than moving the mouse, and the screen updates faster that way than from a mouse-click. Try it, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised.

Hexagonian, I have a 17" screen.

Thanks for the tip on resolution, Chris.

The real problem with the interface though is that it not user friendly. Info is hidden. All the major categories of info should be accessible from the top screen.

As for the sprites, sure they have to be out proportion to the landscape but the CTP ones just dwarf it. They should be about a half to a third smaller.

The sprite issue is one of aesthetic preference. We could argue that one back and forth and never get anything resolved.

The tab system however...
Actually you have a point there. But there are flaws in CIVII/TOT. And the differences/flaws do not make CTP 'The Worst Game Ever' as you stated at the beginning of this thread.

It's true that the tab sytem only provides partial information about a city. (The two tabs, IMO, that should be visible at the same time should be the Maximize tab and the Labor tab.) But as Monkey suggested, using the global City screen or the City Labor screen in conjunction with those tabs will provide you with the necessary info. It's also true that the City screen in CIVII/TOT provides a lot of info - but at a price, because it blocks out the ENTIRE map when it is activated. When you have multiple units in the game, purchase decisions are often based on what you have in the area, and what enemy units are there too. Being able to see the map to see those units in the area is user-friendly. Plus, you still have tabs in the CIVII/TOT City Screen that need to be activated to gain info.

The various screens that you can pull up in CTP are also movable, and you can have several screen up at one time. So the info is there. Personally, I don't need to see every bit of info about a particular city every turn, but I know where to get the relevant info with one click of the mouse.

AH - Several questions, as related to CVII/TOT.
1. Recently got a copy of TOT. Is there 'Fog of War' (and I mean areas that have been explored by a unit but not currently occupied by a unit as opposed to areas that are just only unexplored) in TOT/CIVII and how do you activate it to show up on the map?
2. Also, I get messages that I have finished building an improvement, but I do not get messages that I have built a unit. Any way to activate that?
3. When scrolling through units in TOT, I have to use a keyboard command to skip a unit. If I do not use that keyboard command, that unit's movement is forfeited for that turn. CTP allows me to scroll through my units without the hassle of using a keyboard command to avoid forfeiture of movement.

These are standard features in CTP. I'm wondering if these are not standard in CVII/TOT. It goes back to my earlier point in this thread. You can look at any game and find flaws.

BTW, I'm still waiting for that savegame you were going to send me with the stack of phalanxes killing a defending tank.

Another issue is that it was very difficult to move units. Try getting a unit out of a city for start. I was forever getting the wrong unit fortified or the wrong unit to move. The status window for this was very confusing and no help. Drove me nuts.

Another bug was fortifying unit stacks in and out of cities. What a pain. The status window for this was no help either. Also the interface for building stacks and breaking them up, particularly in cities, was incredibly clumsy!!!!

Face it, the game sucks!!!!

"I say the things I say to the people involved because they have not got the sense to resolve their own problems, and are just flaming the rest of us, or they are trolls looking for attention by causing trouble.

I agree that much needs to be done with CTP, particularly with Diplomacy. Frankly, CTP has been the straw that has broken the camel's back for me. I won't be buying a new games within 6 months of them coming out because I'm tired of being an ignored and uncompensated beta tester. See my latest rant in EVC's thread if you want to know more on how I feel about that.

I play CTP (when I have the chance) because I enjoy it. I post, not because of a fanatical belief in the game, or the company, but because I can't abide whiners, trolls, and troublemakers. These vermin need to be revealed for what they are, and slapped down once, at the beginning of their whiney little tirade.

So my advice to you, should you become disenchanted with CTP, is twofold.

1) Caveat Emptor. Let the buyer beware, because of widespread software theft (also known by the cutsie name of piracy) software companies feel they have liscense to rip the consumer off. We seldom have the opportunity to try before we buy, and the release version of the product usually is quite different from the demo.

2) Retain your dignity. Do not become some bitter, disillusioned whiner who does not know how to deal with the setbacks that life hands us all. Just keep #1 in mind and beware so you don't get ripped off again. I've said it before, I'll gladly say it again. There are 2 game companies that will never see another dollar of mine. That's Microprose and Sierra. This is because of past fiascos that they have release. Truely unplayable games, Outpost and Darklands. CTP has been plagued by enough software issues that I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude for Activision. I won't be buying the next patch, but should they choose to release it as a patch, rather than an expansion, I might buy an expansion from them in the future, or even CTP 2, if and when....

Enough rambling for now....

Big Dave"

Well little dave, that's quite a confession!

Anyone else want to fess up?

I'm forming the impression that what we have here is not people who like CTP and those who don't but those that admit that it SUCKS and those that don't. Everyone in fact knows that it SUCKS.

I like the big units! I have a 19" monitor and I play at 640x480.. it makes me giggle like a school girl to finally see units that seem.. well.. like units and not eensy splotches of color (like starcraft, etc.)
In the words of Sir MixALot, "I like 'em round.. and big!" referring to the fact that I enjoy prodigiously sized units, with an absence of jaggies. Give me WarcraftII any old day!

Oh, which *mods* would everyone suggest? I have the 1.2 patch, and heard mention of an "Apolyton" and a "sandwich" pack.. would anyone care to elaborate?

Turgid, huh? I guess getting online does that for some people.

Markos and some of the mod-makers here have put together a mod combo called the Apolyton Pack. Also, someone made a hack which solves a couple of the deficiencies in the scenario setup. I would highly recommend you getting both those. Just remember you will need to manually switch the aidata folder from the scenario directory to the game directory. They didn't realize until the Pack was out that the game doesn't read that folder in the scenario directory. I would also recommend my terrain mod, too.

I mean, if you just didn't like it, you would move on to something you did like, wouldn't you? And that name! "The Rapist." That is hilarious! (*Shiverrrr*) Another "angry young man," most likely, trying to shock and/or frighten us all. Why not "Killer"? Or, no, no, wait, this one: "Satan"? Ooooh, that gives ME the willies.

Quote:

You people all have the IQ of a 2 year old.

Well, you are of course entitled to your opinion, such as it is. How you must have studied and pondered that...calculating the numbers of civers and estimating each individual one's IQ....As well, the hours you must have contemplated and brainstormed countless descriptive words to finally reach out with your nimble little fingers to type:

"dog crap"

Ladies and gentlemen...let us bow before true genius...a mind so penetrating (hoooh!--hence the name: "The Rapist"--so THAT'S why!!!), a wit so sharp, so keen.
We must bow before greatness!

Of course, your arguments do not seem well-thought out. (And "because" is not spelled "becasue," nor is "earth" spelled "eaarth"--I usually don't care about people's spelling, but since you're intelligent enough to know the average IQ of everyone here (and since you're from England, or so you claim, and thus speak english), I thought I should point that out....Surely a 'probing' mind such as yours must have simply made a simple error? You may wish to edit that later. )

Until then, you just keep up the good thinkin' there, m'boy! Can't debate that logic! Well done!

Wes, dream on - I have never been beaten by man or machine in any wargame (my secret? cheat ).

One thing on the sprites, I would prefer, both in Civ and CTP if the sprites were units rather than individuals - i.e. a squadron of ships/planes, a cohort of legionaries, a company of musketeers. I think this would look awesome. Would have been a lot better then wasting a whole lot of graphic resources making the sprites throw shadows
