G'day to you all! And a cookie to boot! Yes, I just got here (with the game and all), and I was playing around with everyone's favourite file "const.txt". On any occasion, I was trying to play Omnigod's beautiful maps, but to no avail, I could not. You see, I changed the settings for gigantic map size (like the attached readme said) and every time I tried loading a random map in the editor, it would crash. With further testing, I found that only the maps which were of 1:2 ratio would work correctly. I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem, or perhaps even a solution (I really want to play those 210x210 maps!) ------------------ Jokes are for the 'masses'! Don't give in! Oh, and ... if insanity was music, then so would I! |

Hi! Well, I made a 400x400 world map (based on OmniGod's earth map) and this map works perfect! I played 378 turns with "my" map and no crash happened. After you have downloaded the map at http://www.crede.ch/ctp2/ctp2earthmap.zip you have to place the files in the subfolder "Scenarios/WorldMaps/SCEN0001" Also you have to modify the file "scenario.txt" file: The last number represents the number of scenarios in the subfolder "WorldMaps". That is: If there are two subfolders (SCEN0000 and SCEN0001) the number has to be 2! Change also the following line in "const.txt": # # These map size settings must all be defined, # and in this order # MAP_SIZE_SMALL 26 52 2 MAP_SIZE_MEDIUM 48 96 2 MAP_SIZE_LARGE 64 128 2 ------------------------------------------------- THIS line below has to be changed: MAP_SIZE_GIGANTIC 200 400 2 ------------------------------------------------- The original values were: (MAP_SIZE_GIGANTIC 70 140 2) Have a nice day! There is no golden rule The problem may be which map_size you call 210x210 compared to me... I believe that I used gigantic for that. The other problem might be just a difference that skorpion was talking about a long while back. The only solution to that is to import the map which requires me to post the new text maps. My suggestion is to change gigantic and load the editor, if that fails then you when you load the editor load it with another map size and once you get into the editor just load the map. It should resize your world to the 210x210 size. If not then I'll post the txt maps sometime tonight after I'm done TA'ing. |

Ok..I just went by what majority posted... ~Sheepish grin~ Troll ------------------ Hebrews 11:1 Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for and things unseen |

The 1:2 ratio is for a square map appearance and to follow activision's setup. It's been tested and works both with the AI and building maps at any ratio... previous testing before x-mas was a max of 210x210 with normal AI play... since then there have been the mods which may have allowed larger maps with no AI probs... |

Here's my computer limits for map size at 8 AI's. At about 200X by 400Y it slows significant. I can play 150 by 300 without any problem so far. I have a 450 Celeron with 64 Meg. I prefer the map results when I go to 200 by 200. Note: I have the AI's time slice set at 2000/4000. At 4000/8000 things slow down significantly.Spelelunk forever, Dennis

Hi Dennis! Yes, you are right about the time if the gigantic map (200x by 400y) is used.... although I have an Athlon 700 MHz, 256 MB RAM, the AI's time is now (turn 480) quite long (about 30 - 60 sec.) per turn. But anyway, it is very impressive to play on such a huuuuge map! Have a nice day! MrNett |

I have too an Athlon 700 256 RAM..I am on a 250 X 500 Map and 8 AI's..but I gave everyone 25 settlers..then excluded settlers and urban planners..also went to risks.txt and gave a ZERO percent chance of finding either one of them in a ruin...so far so great! This is an all Land Mass...BTW Troll

Well, thanks for all your advice. However. . . none of it worked! I did all that, and still, the game crashes when I import or just start with a "square" map. But on the up-side . . . ONCE it worked (computers are dumb) I never exactly changed anything, I don't know. But I guess I'll just have to chance the crash. I'm running on a 350 Mhz processor with 192 megs of ram. Remember, I have successfully loaded a 400 x 800 map, yet the square maps are always full of trouble. I tried loading a 210x210 map from the "scenarios" menu, but it crashed to desktop still. For some reason it has worked for me once when I changed nothing. I'll look into it more tonight. |

Well..for some reason..If I try anything outside of a 1:2 ratio..I crash to desktop..I am running currently a 180 X 360..all land mass...I tried 200 X 300..but crashed to desktop..Go figure... Troll, we discussed your maps in an earlier post. Well I finally was able to use a 1000x 500 map. not 500 x1000. Well, i have a AMD K6-2 at 400MHz. I had 64MB SDRAM and that size map was slow!!!!. I increased my memory to 224MB, and have quite improved performance. Using 8 civs, it takes a few minutes to load. about 1.5 minutes to open new windows the fist time, but it is quite an improvement. It takes about a minute to close down now. It used to take at least 10 minutes.Flash |

I never tried a 2:1 ratio..but whenever I tried something other than a 1:2 ratio..it crashed..I am glad to see you are doing well... Troll, A 1:2 ratio gives you a square, a 2:1 ratio is a rectangle. It works great but the size is the same number of squares either way. When I get the map down, if anyone wants it I will make it available for download, unless Omni wants to convert it and I'll add the detail if possible.Flash |
