I've got this Win version of freeciv. installed . launched server . launched client . started playing . now why can't I move the unit in diagonal ?????? maybe I am missing something but aren't the 1,3,7,9 keys on the NumPad assigned for this 1 ?

Try turning NumLock on (or off). Whichever way it currently is is the wrong one. |

There is one little thing? do you use the keyboard to switch out of the server window?
If so that is your problem.
The problem is that the Windows version of the server goes into console mode whenever you press a key and waits for you to press before processing any input from the client.
I had that problem and informed the author, Andreas Kemnade, after a few e-mails we identified the problem as described above and he is now trying to solve it.
In the mean time use the mouse to get out of the server after pressing Martin the Dane
