Jools-Glad you asked. I've tried playing it, but for some reason my computer won't allow me to get past the (adding players stage). What's the command for this? Also, do you know any way/set-up to make free civ run in Windows 95/98? I couldn't get the unix (?) shells to work...

I'd love to delve more deeply into freeciv...specially since it says up to 14 civs can play...just that the FAQ for users basically had the tone of "we don't care about you windows idiots. Stop whinying...this isn't meant for you."

Any help from anyone would be wildly welcomed...

Freeciv consists of two programs: the server, which coordinates everything between players and handles the AI, and the client, which human players use to direct the civilization they are playing. To start a single-player Freeciv game under Windows:

1) Start the civserver program -- there should be a start menu entry for this.
2) Select the game options you want in the server.

The next step depends on which version of Freeciv for Windows you are using.
If you are using the Windows-native version:
3) Start the civclient program.
If you are using the X-win version (most people are, since it is better supported):
3) Start your X server (XWin32 is a good X server for Windows), and then start civclient.

4) In the dialog box that comes up for connecting to a server, make sure that the "Host" box contains "localhost". Press the "Connect" button.

5) In the civserver, type the word "start". This will start the game.

To start a multiplayer game (the easy way):
1) Connect to the Internet.
2) Start your X server (if you are using one) and civclient.
3) In the dialog box that comes up, click on the "Metaserver" tab and click the "update" button.
4) To start a new game, select one of the servers that does not have any players on it.
5) Click the "Connect" button.
6) Wait until enough other players have joined the game, then type "/start" in the chat text box to start the game.

To join a game someone else is running, do steps 1-3 above.
4) Select a game from the list that has the status "pregame".
5) Click the "Connect" button.
6) Chat with the other players until the game starts.

Freeciv is a freeware game that is similar to Civ II. It is designed to fix many of the problems with Civ II. At its current state, it is good for multiplayer games and scenario design.
See http://www.freeciv.org for more information.

I play it occasionally, have one game running on my Linux box right now. It's pretty good, and continues to improve for each version. My main problem: I've grown used to CivII deity play (and OCC). That strategy won't work on FreeCiv. Expansion is way more important, while riot control is easier (I spend too many shields on warriors and temples early on).
AI is good, but doesn't handle diplomacy (yet). While it's designed for MP (last CVS version allows up to 126 players, IIRC), I think it still lacks the macro-management and UI to allow fast game play.
I would recommend setting up a Linux box (or an Amiga) for playing FreeCiv. All development is done on Unix, and I haven't heard much good about the Windows versions. A java version is in the works, that might be more promising than a native windows compile.

I have a problem with it, Mark, i betcha you could answer it.
I use GNOME, and I can't save any of my games. A simple "couldn't save bla bla" message comes up in the server shell. Any tips?

The only thing I can think of is to make sure that you have permission to save files in the directory you are trying to save to.

Actually the patch to allow up to 126 players never got into CVS, because it didn't work properly I think
But just 2 days ago I checked in the patch to raise the number from 14 to 30. (that number is limited by the lenght of a player bitvector, ie 32. The last 2 players are reserved for barbarians)

I've played it on Linux but I'm playtesting the windows version now.(CVS ver 1.10.1) Yes Thue, Fog of War IS installed and activated!
At the moment I recommend the use of the demoversion of X-win32 for the X-server. It's a snap to install and you can use it for 2 hours without any hassle.

I'll have to go with Slackware on this one. It's the only distro of linux that I managed to get working on my spare machine, and even then I haven't got X-windows working properly.

Any distro of Linux beats the crap out of Windoze and MacOS any time. But if you happen to be a total Unix bimbo, go with SuSE Linux. It's so easy, that the mac-crazed admin of my school managed to get it run on the same HD with WinNT without my assistance, X and everything! If you are any dumber than him, I truly feel sorry for you.

No what we need is a board to set up Freeciv games and an Apolyton based metaserver to keep track of them! So how about that new section, admins? Is it coming along or what?

Why would we need an extra metaserver? The one at www.freeciv.org works ok, and having only one means that all the players are together at one place.

Urgh, looks like I got cornered.

MarkG, I've never tried mandrake, so I wouldn't know. I guess choosing a distro is a question of taste. No point in fighting over those.

On the extra board and meta one, you are both right Thue & MarkG. I made that post pretty late my time, so I wasn't thinking very much.

I've played a few games of FreeCiv.

Ive seen both Mandrake and Suse install and both of their install's are very easy (assuming you have supported hardware). Personally I recommend Mandrake, as it gave me more options than Suse, on install, plus it can dynamically resize your windos partition. (not sure if Suse can do this)

Oh and Mandrake's Mailing lists are extremely helpful to newbies.

Let's not start a distro war already, eh? I'm using Mandrake now, but have used Debian before. An extremely well-driven and friendly community, the best installer (first dselect, then apt even better), and better for customizing for low-grade boxes. A developer release of Freeciv broke the installation, though...
Most people use RedHat, on which Mandrake is based. The next distro I will try is Corel, that one got a lot of nice reviews.

Stability:

Linux Mandrake release 6.1 (Helios)
Kernel 2.2.13-7mdk on an i586

[stig@mandrake stig]$ uptime
9:07am up 100 days, 17:55, 4 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

Looks good, right? 100 days since a power black-out booted the box last time. Not too high load on it, though...

Stop this silly distribution war already, Freeciv doesn't need Linux. In fact, it's easier to install on FreeBSD, and I've also seen it on Solaris, IRIX, HP/UX, Amiga, OS/2, and other platforms. Main development happens on Unix variants, mainly on Linux,
so you Windows users sometimes lag behind a little.

Are you sure you have the right version of Freeciv. If you're using XWin32, make sure you have the X-win release of Freeciv, not the native Windows one. If you have trouble configuring XWin32, just do a search for some documentation for it. It shouldn't be too hard to find some online.

Ummm... no. Here's what Bill did:

1) Bill buys DOS almost finished from an independent hacker, polishes it a bit, and licenses it off to IBM.

2) Bill and Microsoft work together with Steve Jobs (Apple) for a while. In return, Bill steals Apple's idea for a user-friendly GUI OS.

3) Bill makes Windows 3.X, which is not user-friendly, or an OS for that matter. It's a DOS app that makes windows and crashes a lot.

4) Bill makes Win95. It still needs DOS and crashes a lot. MacOS beats the crap out of it in user friendlines.

5) Bill makes Win98. It still can't quite get rid of DOS, and it still crashes a lot. MacOS is still friendlier.

6) Bill makes Win2K. I don't even know what it looks like yet, and I sure as hell won't pay a 100 bucks to find out.

So much for "Bill's original and user friendly OS".

Windows 3.X is very similar to a UNIX windows manager.

Windows 95 (Windows 4.0) is an advanced version of Win 3.1

Yes, Xwindow for UNIX is a sparate suite not tied to the kernel, but it sure isn't distributed as a full fledged OS like Win 3.X was. Linux (or any other Unix) is the OS running it, and I have never managed to hang Linux yet. I'm serious.

Yes, Windows 98 is ALMOST an OS.

Yes, Win NT is an OS, and the only bad thing I have to say about is that it costs almost twice as much as Win98.

And now I'm going to shut up on this matter. Please don't try to intimidate me.

Hey I never claimed Billy did anything original, he just knows where to buy a good idea from... !!!

Problem with Mac and even more so with Linux is lack of applications. Mac is getting better, but till software companies are encouraged to release a version of their software for other than Windows most people wil lcontinue to be stuck with crappy blue screens !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No apps for Linux, you say? Where did you look? Your local software store, maby? That's the worst possible place to find stuff for Linux. Most Linux apps are open-source and licensed under the GPL. It is illegal to sell these products or their modifications without providing the source code for them. Why would you sell something that anyone can legally copy, modify, and distribute for free as much as they like?

There is a massive amount of open-source Linux and compatible Unix software available out there, more than enough to provide an equal or better Linux alternative for almost any piece of software for Bill's OS you can get your hands on, and it usually doesn't cost you a penny. So where do all these apps hide? Look from these for starters:
