I just got started with the game, the only game like this i have played is Colonization.

I was wondering if some of you experts could help me get started.

Who should i be? where do i start? how many cities shoudl i build. What things shoudl i worry about? What settings for production, rations, etc??

Hi cffl.

I'm fairly new to the whole CTP/Civ scene too, and I found that simply reading the manual (I know, I know, it's somewhat painful...) helped out a lot in answering the questions I had, which were much the same as yours.

There's that, and also a heap of experimenting/playing.

First of all, welcome to TBS.
1. Be whoever you want. Civilizations are all exactly the same, except for the names.
2. As for the rest of it... This stuff all depends on your strategy. Do you want to conquer the world or expand your knowledge. You might want to try different strategies, just to see what's more fun.
