Funny you should say that, I'd already set my sights on you as the next person to 'shoot for'. Now I guess I'll just have to stay off my computer so I can do it. Can do a unit in 12 hours if I'm using the computer, can do a unit in 8.5 if I don't... Better watch out |

The interesting race is Sten Sture, MarkG and don Don. They keep one upping each other. Every day when I run SetiTeam, they have traded places. Carlos113 and Murgatroyd is fixing to get interesting also.

If any of you are looking for a less strenuous version of a client processor, try Entropia 2000, available at http://www.entropia.com . It does AIDs research from Aids@Home. The interface is very nice and it doesn't appear to be nearly as compute intensive as Seti@Home. Personally, I am running the DOS Seti@Home and the windows screen-saver Entropia versions at the same time for testing. Talk about watching the CPU go to 100%. Another option is the Pioneer client from Parabon, http://www.parabon.com . It does cancer research which is what I am shooting for but alas the Pioneer client sucks big time.

Thanks Skorpion for those other suggestions. Though I like the idea of 'discovering' new life, I think it may be more important for the AIDs or Cancer ones. I didn't know there were similar programs for them. I'll have to check them out. Thanks! |

Hey, OmniGod, I finally passed you on the list I switched over to the command line version instead of the pretty graphics version and am now getting a work unit done in 6.5-7.5 hours. Woohoo! |

Yeah, the DOS or CLI (command line interface) version is the one to run. It is much faster than the Windows version. It takes more effort but it is worth it.Just don't fire it up when your 6 hours into an 8 hour video encoding session. Had to learn that one the hard way. Oh well, live and learn.

about these radio signals--they come from that big-ass satelite dish that you always see in movies, right? (Aracebo?) by the way-- let me know if you find some aliens LOL but seriously-- the seti@home program is a great thing! (i used to run the screensaver, a few years ago) i'm just suprised (and happy) this many of you are a part of it

You mean you didn't know Unix was built on DOS! Technically, it is SetiCli (Command Line Interface). All CLI clients are listed under Unix. [This message has been edited by skorpion59 (edited February 27, 2001).]

Well folks, incase you haven't noticed...SETI at Berkeley has been down for the past few days. Evidently, vandels cut the fiber cables used for the SETI Project. The report stated the vandals were looking to salvage copper from other nearby cables So if you haven't been able to connect to Berkeley to upload new data - this is why. The report states that service should be restored by Friday 02 March 2001.

No problems here yet. I use Setigate, I program that will cache SETI-units for you so that you can continue to process workunits even if the server is down. But it shouldn't last much longer. Depending on what else I'll be doing on my computer I have only for 16-20 hours of units left. |

I finished the last of my cached units yesterday. I was lucky in that I had just downloaded 3 units about an hour before the line was cut. I've been looking at this as time for my CPU to cool off a little bit. Stepped back my overclocking and watched my cpu temps drop about 8 degrees C. It thinks it's on vacation... Ooops, gotta run, it just placed an order for another round of pina coladas. |

Sometimes a workunit has so much noise in it that SETI can't do anything with it and just asks for a new one. In that case you can get very fast units. |

Great another user. we can always use more, Thanks. On another note, anybody been seeing anything weird since upgrading to V3.03 of the client. When using both the GUI and CLI clients, I get *.sah files scattered all across my hard drive in all kinds of directories. The first time I noticed this, I found 1800 SAH files to delete (outside the Seti directory). Has anybody run into anything like this?

Well, I put another operating system on my computer (duel boot now - Windows ME and Windows 2000), any way, I figured I would load the command client instead of the full version (to try and get more speed). After I did this, there were sah files scattered all over my desk top!So I deleted the command client version and got rid of all of those sah files, then loaded up the 3.03 full version (in Windows 2000). Haven't had any problems since - but it still takes me between 14-15 hrs per unit to complete and that's with a 866MHZ processor and 512MB RAM. |

No problems here. I use the CLI under Win98 with SetiGate to cache workunits and my sah files are only in the Seti-client directory. |

I had the GUI version installed then switched over to the CLI. I haven't had any files show up outside of the directories they're supposed to be in. Just did a scan of my system to make sure and everything came up okay. I don't have any idea what could cause that. |

I've been in offices with ~40 SETI clients running around. If PCs are on for 24 hrs a day, it's very efficient.------------------ Solver - http://www.aok.20m.com |

Well, I finally did it too. My goal for the last 6 months has been to make it to fourth place and I hit that mark this past weekend. I guess now I will try to hang on to fourth for a couple of months and then that will be that.Welcome Moondog. I see you found you could add your units to the Apolyton total. As for how many computers I have running, that just about depends on what day of the week it is. I have a Novell network in my house and I try to keep 6 computers online at any given time. This is for multiplayer gaming as my house is the local gaming center. In the early days, I tried to keep Seti on 4 or 5 computers but now days I just run it on 2. I have moved on to the United Devices Cancer program and run that on most of my computers now. With the failure of CtP2, playing Diablo2 on Battle.Net has totally taken over my network and most people turn off the clients when they play and fail to turn them back on when they are done. As I am in the middle of a struggle with Cancer myself, I don't tend to ensure the clients get turned back on when they are done like I used to.
