Caravan gives 1 Trade Route Point and costs 380 production points to build.

Freight Transport, the modern age equivalent of the caravan, gives 3 Trade Route Points and costs 1200 production points to build.

Comparing Freight Transport to Caravan shows we pay 1200 production points for the Transport to get 3 Trade Route Points, whereas for 3 caravans we would pay 1140 points to get the same result.

I want my caravans back!

Yes, but you can build three trade routes in one turn from a large city. With caravans, it's take three turns. Sounds like a good deal for me...

Ideally, you could extend this prinicple to other units with SLIC. Build two musketeers at once, for example...

The deal comes from the added benefits of efficiency from only needing one turn. A city with ~1500 production can make freight in one turn and only waste 300 production. That same city would have waste of 3000 over 3 turns if it tried to make caravans instead. Freight prevents that waste.

Hmm yes, hadn't thought about it that way yet. I guess it is a better deal, although I still don't see why it has to cost more
