Personally I thought SMAC was good but in my opinion CTP2 is better. SMAC was fun the first time I played it but I got bored of it pretty quick. There were some things I didnt like about it. I guess though this is more my personality though. I like more down to earth games. I probably like CTP2 more cause I have a realistic mind that lacks creativity. Really the most important aspect to games I play is realism and accuracy, whether it be a sports game, or and RTS or a FPS. For example I like realistic blood and gore, not green blood. Well basically what I am saying is it seems I am the only person who didnt like SMAC all that much, really because I got bored of it after the first time I played it.

Kidding aside, so much detail is abstracted in the Civ-style games that it's pretty silly to talk about realism and accuracy in reference to them--SMAC and CTP2 included.
