I really don't like to use the city mayors in the game. The problem is, if I don't use the mayors, I have to continuosly go through each city and assign the new workers farming early in the game. Why don't the new workers default to farmers when added? I usually don't need the other specialists until later in the game. Even then, most in the city are farmers!

For a moment I thought I was in the wrong forum, but then as I continued reading your post, I realized that you were talking about specialists and not the classic style worker management.

Well, if you want more food and growth in the beginning, add farmers and build the appropriate improvements. But some players may want a more balanced progression for their cities, and so I say, "To each their own".

This is all just so confusing.......

I know you will agree with me that the """MANUAL""" could have been more specific concerning these game mechanics.

I guess my point is that the population (specialists) should not be put into a "labor pool", but automatically assigned to farming.

Mike8 if I understand correctly you believe that by NOT assigning farmers you get no food? On the contrary you get growth based on surrounding tiles, the city growth model is not same as classic civ/civ2 check the help forums for clarification

Doh! You're right. Still trying to apply the old Civ rules I guess. There is one thing this game could use, though. An alarm clock to let me know when it's time to quit playing
