Realistically, I always hope for a two-movement unit to expedite exploration and enable me to tip more goodie huts.Ideally, I'd love to receive Monarchy. |

Well... If I already have my first city down, I would take a non settler, or a free city... If not, a two movement unit would be nice If I haven't placed it down yet, just give me that two movement non unit |

yup what he said.... to be more specific i would like a chariot or elephant from a hut with a city down...... i will take the non settler over the city but really now....... who wants to be greedy If its a high shield city down i will take 100g to pump out a couple of settlers before size two takes effect. if its science then i will take alphabet with cheers and WC with jeers But most of all if i have a city down i will take a non unit to go after my unfortunate neighbor can you say second city toast! |

It's hard to beat those NON settlers, but who could argue with a village that teaches you monarchy? Apolytoners seem to loath archers, but a NON archer for your first city is good - no need to build a defender for a few centuries at minimum = more time to build what you want.------------------ "There is no fortress impregnable to an ass laden with gold." -Philip of Macedon |

"but who could argue with a village that teaches you monarchy?"When we play MP we restart if host has techs. If my fist hut is monarchy, I'm in big trouble, since it means I didn't find any huts early. I'm with Ming and War4 on this one, (and it seems most others) Non-2-movement unit if before first city. (an archer to protect my cap is almost as good) Nomad after. But I won't whine about a city. More 2-movements units, Any tech that I'm researching. 100 gold is underated. Buying up settlers early can make a big diff. RAH

2-move non-unit for the first two huts. After that, the tech I'm currently researching, a couple more 2-move non-units or 100 gold would be nice. Problem is, 100 gold is rare. Usually you get 50 or 25. |

A chariot. An early two-move unit can help you find and tip more huts, which can yield more units, who tip more huts...Exploring the map early helps in a lot of ways, and having several fast units is the best way to explore. The chariot can also double as a barb killer if necessary. |

I prefer the Settlers to getting a City, since usually the City is in a bad location. When I get a City from a hut in a bad location, I have it build a settler at Pop 1 and found a new city in a better location, or happy to get NON Settler to do work.A 2 move unit is always nice for your first hut for more tipping, as mentioned in other posts. |

New settlers and units (except horsemen) always come in-handy. However, you need 50gp or 100gp when you want to build a wonder and just dont have the money to build it. |

I'd rather learn the ancient art of nuclear fission from a hut... Back nearly a decade ago when I first started playing Civ1, in my first game, I walked over a hut and barbarians popped out, so I assumed the huts always did that, and never checked another one for like a couple of years |

Well my opinion on this is that the new city is good if you get it b4 you found your capital. Otherwise it is usually too far away and corruption and waste are bad (unless you ICS) and it is usually in a bad location anyways. I am with the guys that want a good non 2 movement unit from the first hut for more hut tipping and exploration. |

this is true..... and although most cities are placed poorly..... sometimes an early city has minimal overlap and is actually a benefit ! When this happens i let out a big war whoop and proceed with agression |

In one game, the first hut I tipped gave me an advanced tribe, much to my delight. However, in the very next turn, a barbarian horseman pillaged the undefended city and since my initial two settlers were still busy tipping huts, I lost the game. I finally got to see the end screens -- cool. |

What am I missing here. Two people have now mentioned getting a city from a hut prior to laying their first city down. I thought that it was common knowledge that before you laid down your first city, all you could get was money, units, or sciences. (no barbs, no settlers, no cities) Yes, I've heard the tales of people who go hut hunting and finally got a city close to AD...Again, what am I missing here Are we playing the same game? |

Good question Ming! I think some posters' memories are playing tricks. The very first time I visited this site I recall reading how somebody found Mass Production in a hut - mass production of myths! Before any city is built the only outcomes from villages are: Gold or a Unit or a Science - and you must have the prerequisites for the tech. No Monarchy without Alphabet/Code of Laws/Ceremonial Burial SG(2) |

Yes SG... I remember the famous "I got Mass production from a hut posts" I also remember those who took my goody hut hunt approach far beyond 2000bc and claim to have gotten a city before laying a city down. And I also remember experimenting after hearing that. I tried resetting a hut before placing my first city down over 1000 times, and all I got was gold, a unit, or a science that I had the preregs for... Now granted the year was about 2500BC... so I can't discount that it might not happen later in the game, but I did it at that time frame because that is about the latest I would ever go using that strategy. Maybe they were playing TOT |

I don't think I have ever gotten a nomad b4 laying down a city but I have gotten an advanced tribe b4 laying one. It could be that it was near or after ad because a few times during experimenting I have wandered that long. Sorry I don't recall the date but it can happen |

I went through an entire phase of explore forever on large maps without founding and once, just once out of a lot of games and a very large number of huts, I got an advanced tribe. And it was early, BC for sure.I remember it because it had no palace and didn't offer me the option to build one. I put a regular city down and it too had no palace nor any option to build. Seem to remember a post when Xin Yu recounted something similar. Anyway, I think this is just a bug which surfaces in rare circumstances. The basic rule is clear and as stated. By the way, I have recently appreciated that the trigger for advanced tribes having more than one citizen and an improvement or several is the tipping player's discovery of Invention. It's a while since I read William Keenan's slot property paper so I can't remember if this has been appreciated before or not. |

Exploring huts with planes is much more fun than exploring with land units. But seriously, can paratroopers explore huts? Never tried it myself. |

Yes, paratroopers can tip huts; any land units can. Too bad about air units not being able to collect what's inside, tho. Why is it that you cannot find explorers in huts? Yeah, the three movement factor of explorers would be nice early in the game... but I wish we could get diplos/spies from huts. Think of the possibilities |
