Someone wrote about that challenge a few months ago: winning ww2 scenario without time limit but playing as Franco, benighted leader of the Spanish.

I finished it yesterday (august 1961) and I wish to tell you: it's REAL FUN.
In june 1940, Spain is about 15 techs late compared with the Allies or the Axis, almost no roads, almost no mines, 5th civ on the powergraph, way behind the French and miles away from the Russians, the Axis or the Allies.

If you like building a strong civ, I believe that is needed.
If you enjoy fighting, you can't avoid it (the Russians lost more than 800 units in my game).
Nukes? Yes sir (I tried to avoid nuclear war; nevertheless more than 20 nukes were blown).

Have a try! You'll enjoy it.

(personally I enjoyed it so much that I am now busy playing it as French)

Well done LaFayette - you obviously found a lot of time for Civ while on vacation ...
Don't distract me, my Carthaginian Ironclads are massing at the gates of Rome and its still the third century BC - I certainly am not going to beat DaveV's ?43? turns, but I'm anticipating a sub century finish - are your dates for total conquest or all objectives?
Again, congratulations ...

I did that three years ago or something like that, if you want to change goverment go to a neutral city and steal techonologies, when you steal Fundamentalism you have the chance to change goverment...

In my game I was ready to invade Russia in 1970 there wasn´t any other civ in the game

YES, there is a way.
You are allowed to change as soon as you discover (or steal or trade for or receive as a gift) a new government. Do it at once. Next turn is too late.

To make it clear to civsplitting specialists:
No civ was split into 3 in 1 blow.
The sequence was as follows:
French take Berlin = American rebels in Italy + Axis capital moved to Dresden
French take Dresden (on the same turn) = Aztec rebels in Benelux + Axis capital moved to Prague (ST: sorry I mean Praha).

yeah, that doesn't work in FW... otherwise I'd just switch to Fundy, but that won't work on my highly intellectual version of the game... BTW, is Democracy a better idea for this scenario? I suppose not...

I used Democracy.
Try Fundy, if you feel like it, and let us know.

BTW here are the latest news on the BBC:
December 1960: All russian objectives have become french (purple color). (french rebels, dark blue, appeared when french troops, purple colored, entered Moscow, but they did not last long). French (democratic, purple colored) troops are now in London and Washington.
One fat city named New York and a few middle size objectives remain foreign.
Victory in april 1961? Our reporter will let you know.

All right, you super-deity-ACinBCwithOCsize1 civ masters, how about winning as the Neutrals in the WW2 scenario? That looks like an ugly undertaking, altho unlimited time would make it possible for the civ whiz. I'm not at that skill level, so maybe I'll try the Spaniards first...

I must admit trying it with the Neutrals is tempting Your allied with the Allies to start off with so you can just go to them for techs. Take over scandinavia, then send a couple transports full of howies to take Britain. Should be easy from then on

Decided to have a go as Neutrals. Not as difficult as I thought - it's October 1949 and the Neutral Scandinavian and Iranian howitzers are gathering in Bergen for the invasion of England. Taking England should be easy, but attacking the Axis is gonna be hell, they've got Manhattan Project and there's no way I'm getting the laser anytime soon. Although I was soon reduced to 2 cities, it was suprisingly easy, building airports in Tehran and Stockholm and airlifiting freights over to be transported to England produced tons of cash fortunately since I needed to research robotics myself.

Contest: Whoever wins as the neutruals, the turks, and the spanish wins!

(If you can win as the turks or neutruals it goes without saying that you can win as the allies axis french and russians

All I need is to win as the neutruals (I've won the other 2). This will be difficult!

My opinion in short:
The ww2 scenario was designed to be fought and won either by the Axis or the Allies or the Russians within time limit. Many of us have done that, I suppose.
Winning being either French or Spanish, without time limit, is possible: I have just done that. And it is FUN.
(contrary to what SilverDragon states, I found it even more challenging to win with the French than with the Spaniards: no Pyrenees to start with, and a lot of heavy cheating by the AI later on, eg stole me suddenly 30 000 gold twice in a row!).

Tiny Hall of Fame (today, but I know it won't last! ):
French: La Fayette; april 1961.
Spaniards: La Fayette; august 1961.

Has anyone won with either Turks or Neutral?
I feel compelled to have a try with both

As nuetruals, the best thing is to sell enough to build airports in both Tehran and Stockholm, and then you can send routes from tehran to england and get 1000 gold a route. Unfortunately, I still can't kill anybody. I might bribe the axis cities, but first i'll steal some techs

Are you guys playing the original ww2 scenario that came with the game? It looks like it, but I'm not sure. I thought about playing the neutrals and spanish. I thought I would get bored waiting so many years to build my forces up. But maybe it would be a nice challenge. I think I did try to play the ottoman empire in some ww1 scenario before (the one that came with the add on I think). It's tough.

Yes we are and, believe me, it's FUN (the delicious feeling that you are so tiny and weak that you never will manage to fight those giant monsters, Axis, Allies and Russians).

Here is a short summary of my experience (1 game as Franco, 1 game as DeGaulle):
The main problem is to stay alive and grow your civ during the first 10 years.
Spain stays alive quite easily with help of somewhat careful diplomacy (don't forget to bow before talking to any of the big 3). Then you should be able to fight the French victoriously (but I was unable to avoid being at war with the Axis doing that and was compelled to prepare very quickly a strong surprise attack allowing me to take Berlin and split the Axis empire).
Playing DeGaulle, I never managed to be at peace with the Axis (looks quite reasonable from a historical point of view ).
But the Axis asked for a cease fire any time they took a french city and RESPECTED it (more or less). Then it became some kind of 'compte à rebours' (telling backwards: 5,4,3,2... ), trying to conquer Spain before the Axis had conquered what was left of France.

I suppose that the problem is roughly the same for the Neutral Leader (impossible to make peace with the Axis after they have taken Amsterdam in june 1940, hence you are bound to loose Belgrade 2 years later or so; can you then get strong enough to defend Stockholm or is your small civ condemned to a new start with only Tehran?).
I shall have a serious try from tomorrow on (hope this helps for those who wish to have a try too).

Report on BBC1, March 1945: SPANISH MENACE SUBDUED

The heady Spanish leader, El Marqui de Vasco, has been chased back to Madrid by the French and their allies , the Axis powers. De Gaulle told the press that El Marqui had deeply offended the French by making diplomatic contact. "Vee had no choice but to declare war on zem, non? Our good friends, zee Germans, who were so kind to take from us zat rats' nest, Paris, will aid us een zees struggle." El Marqui requested assistance from Allied forces, but was declined. "With the entire German navy off the coast of Portugal, our own efforts should be so much easier," declared Churchill. The minister did, however, send a case of brandy to the spaniards as a gesture of goodwill.

Altho efforts to cross the Pyrenees proved futile and bloody, the superior navies emptied coastal Spanish cities of defenders, forcing rushed conscription, in turn wreaking havoc on the feeble spanish economy. The French freed the city of Tangiers from spanish tyrrany in January. The Spanish decided the war was too much, and are now taking a siesta. El Marqui closed his capitulation speech declaring, "We weell crush you een an alternate reality!"

Pero si! That scenario should have it set so that the French and Germans can't make peace, let alone ally with one another. Maybe I'll tweak it myself. Apparently all those engineers working the hills struck fear into the heart of europe; They foresaw the bleak future of paella and olives and nipped it in the bud. Grrr...

Meanwhile, El Marqui checks with his scientists, the time machine is almost complete...

Got tech for transports off allies, build airports and flew all my freight into Stockholm. I took the cities in Scandinavia one by one, making cease fire with the Axis after taking each. This was before the contruction of the Manhattan project . What I meant was attacking mainland Europe will be hell.... I even screwed up attacking England, not bringing enough howies, but now (early 1951) an Allied and an Axis nuke later, England is finally secure under the Neutrals . The Zulu nation appeared in the middle east after I took London. At least now I have a large production base to start producing units to attack the Axis. Being stuck in Monarchy (I'm playing FW) hurts.

LOL@ Marquis
I confess that this description of average french accent seems to be quite realistic (though it doesn't apply to mine ).
Otherwise your experience is in accordance with mine: if you attack the French, you fight the Germans; that is why I started with North Africa (in 1948 IIRC) and did not try to send troops over the Pyrenees before 1950.

Shall I try to sum up?
1) 1940: Sell some improvements and buy airports in Tehran and Stockholm.
2) Following years (1941 to 1946 ?): rushbuild freights in Tehran and build transports in Stockholm; then airlift the freights from T. to S. and use the transports to forward them to England.
3) 1942(?): Lose Belgrade to the Axis
4) 1946(?): Discover Robotics and start building howies.
5) 1947 and 1948: Take OSLO, then BERGEN from the Axis with help of those howies.
Is that what you managed to achieve?
IMO it is brilliant.
I tried that kind of starting strat several times the other day: did not manage to get ONE freight to England (either airlift shot down between T. and S., or, most of the time, transport sunk by Axis navy between S. and England.

AFAIK no one has managed to win that ww2 scenario as neutral leader yet.
My starting idea was about the same as SilverDragon's and DrFell's (airlift between Tehran and Stockholm, then forwarding freights, preferably to England (for island bonus)).
It failed (several tries; not even ONE freight delivered in England).
So I decided to choose the long way: building a fresh new civ around Tehran, far from the harsh guns of the Axis. I lost Belgrade in 1942, as expected, but managed to keep Stockholm with help of a SAM which proved to be very wary and efficient (the Allies had given me rocketry just in time).
The Russians did not like my idea and I built my small civ under permanent threat of their guns and spies. Hence it took me 23 years to build a tiny '6 cities civ' able to strike its weakest neighbor (namely the French in Damascus).
It is june 1963 and my first 4 howies should take Damascus very very soon.
From previous experience with the Spaniards and the French, I suppose that the worst is now behind me. Inch Allah!

Stockholm is relatively safe from the axis; they have few forces up there. Thus keep all your freight up in Stockholm. IMO Tehran is in more danger, if you end up at war with either Russians or Allies it'll be hell to defend. After Belgrade is taken your likely to get a ceasefire offer from the Axis, obviously you gotta take it at all costs, including tribute payment. Then send over the freight. After that it gets much easier. Currently I now have UK secure, and I am preparing for the attack on the Axis. It's 1955 and the main problem is actually building enough units, corruption in England is a major problem too. The Allies are destroyed, the USA and Middle East has fallen into the hands of the evil Japanese empire (not the Zulus as it turns out) so hopefully if I take Berlin the Axis will split in two. Now I just need enough vet howies for a successful attack, luckily Axis are preoccupied with Russia at the moment (and they're winning). I'm definitely not going to do this in record time, but its a bit of fun

Edit: Actually the best way to get cease fire with the Axis is to beg for tech off the Allies, contact the Axis and hope they haven't got the tech you just got. This can buy you cease fire for a while, if your lucky.

Taking up the Neutral's challenge.

Its Dec 1959 and its just the Russians and me left (they have over 15000g) I have about 3000g and was able to switch to fundamentalism (2.42 ). I'm just sneak attacking the Russians (pretty much the same front for them as at the start although they've laid down a couple more cities and some were destroyed by the Axis). Over 100 units are flooding over the border and I've taken about 7 cities so far this turn and will probably get about 2-3 more (they have 48 cities I have 73). I expect them to be able to bribe a couple back so I'm going to try and block the routes to them using mech inf/ bomber stacks.

After the axis took Amsterdam on turn 1 they offered a cease-fire and then peace. I was able to ally with all the other civs then. The Axis sneak attacked to take Belgrade a few turns later. The entire world declared war on the Axis and the gifts started to roll in. This was the end of the German challenge for me as they threw units at the Russians and left Stockholm alone. Allies giving a tech every 2 turns and a few hundred gold from all the others (Turks were a bit poorer). Started getting over 400g every other turn from the French . After Howies Scandinavia was mine (c1948/9). Allies sneak attack almost crippled me but luckily they had just built a new city near Oslo for me to take (-> peace).

Took Great Britain and Baghdad and neighbouring cities by 1952. US by 1953.
After taking about 6 Axis cities the germans decided to start building Manhatten project (at a hell of a rate considering how few shields they were generating ). Used some sabotage and taking of cities to stop it being built . Bribed last Turkish city and took a couple of turns to finish the French and Spanish. With Fundamentalism, JSB, AS, MC, Hoover the money's flooding in and production is high.

Should be finished by 1962/3

Finished all the objectives (barring 1 or 2 destroyed when the Axis and Russians were fighting) in Oct 1960 and took the last Russian city in Dec 1960. After Moscow fell the Russians became extremely keen to build the Manhatten Project. Captured a city with a nearly complete MP several times . They managed to throw away 1047 units (cf 123 for the neutrals). I had over 500 units at the end about half of which were Mech Inf defending the cities and about 100 howitzers and 75 tanks . Probably should have used them better and won earlier.

It is clear that the Neutrals are so weak that lucky results in the field of diplomacy are key to a good start. Ally with all against the Axis is probably the best one can get , and you managed to get it. Congratulations!

Turks: ...?, ...?

(it seems that DrFell is bound to win with Neutrals in 1963, and I should manage it around 1975; 'it's a long way to Tiperary...'; therefore I suppose I stop where I am, nice place in front of Istambul,(my mother lived there when she was a young girl), and switch to the Turks).

Certainly helped having nobody knocking at the gates from the start. MP never getting built probably sped things up a little as well. No need to rush-build SDI or recover from being nuked. Almost every AI city I took had an SDI though, so a nuclear war would have been a bit one-sided .

I only saw about 5-6 Russian Howies after the first turn of the invasion and didn't lose any units to them. I think this was mainly because most of their offensive units had been tramping around on my territory before I cancelled the alliance, so that they were all destroyed when I took every city along the front (except Murmansk) that turn. They had nothing left to counter-attack with .

... the russian bear stayed asleep...

Anyway, it seems that you are #1 (of all times and all levels?) to win ww2 as neutral leader and this deserves SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS.

(Nobody has claimed to have won as French, hence that pleasure is mine, and it is a special pleasure for a frenchman to win ww2 as leader of the French

I think the Turks may be a big challenge. Stuck between the Axis and the Russians I can't see peace lasting for very long, perhaps a new mountain/hill city will be needed.

Although I never finished a game, I have played as the Turks several times.

It's not too hard, really. If you can stay out of war with the russians for at least 10-20 turns, you can build rails to connect your civ and yourself to the axis, and then I send freights into the heart of Germany. With some trade flowing and cities growing, I build tanks and howies and attack the two French cities down there (can't remember the names, it's been some time). By now the Russians have usually declared war, but it's easiest to just let them waste units on Istanbul (coastal fortress) and whichever city is in the east closest to the Russians (walls + SAM). From here it's your choice. Taking the French And Spanish cities of Northern Africa gives you a nice launching pad for an invasion of Spain, and a MUCH larger empire. This has always been my way at it, but I'm sure there are some MUCH more effective ways of doing this.

I might try this again tonight After my homework, of course...
