In the modern age we have Einstein to increase the science in the city, Elvis to increase the luxuries and other guy to increase the taxes.

Does the other guy like Einstein and Elvis some important economost or something similar, or not?

I totally agree. Generally he is just called the tax collector, but I definetally think he needs an actual name. How about Adam Smith (but his name is already in the game), or < scratch, scratch > What would be a good name that people would be able to remember?

Yes economists aren't so popular for most people. You can note Ford, with was a good economist but a bad humanist, I think.

We had (french) Colbert by example. Look at your history book and at the Economy Nobel Price.

I have the perfect one.

Rockefeller

Besides being famous for all his money, and being a famous philanthropist, (had to attone for all the people he had wacked building his empire)

It can be shortened to "Rocks".

"My city had an Elvis and a couple of Rocks."

"I didn't need the extra science or happiness so I used Rocks."

key factor: rememberability, how well can people remember the name? I don't think I would ever be able to remember that they are called Rockyfellows, or whatever. It is much easier to remember Uncle Sam, or just Sam. I can spell that, and I think most other people will be able to spell that as will, and also:
quote:

"I didn't need the extra science or happiness so I used Rocks."

just doesn't sound right, it sounds more like you built Rock(affeler)'s something or other rather than tax colletors.

A famous tax collector in legend was the Sherrif of Nottingham, does anybody know his personal name? Guy de Guisborne was a different character wasn't he?

I actually thought it would be easy to remember one of the richest families of all time, airdrik

But if someone from Idaho didn't recognize it,
1. My age is showing.

2. The public school system has gotten worse than I thought.

It isn't as much that he isn't all that hard to remember, it is just that his name is too big, and has too many syllables, and, and, and... and Uncle Sam is just easier to remember.

I have been rather annoyed by the similarity of the tax collector to my appearance ever since the game came out. Microprose never did get me to sign a release. I wonder what lawyer icons look like?

Money sucking vampire would work for me any time.

Now if we can find a universal character to personify this...

It really has the same meaning as tax collector tho, now that I think of it

Mad Monk:

You wanted an answer to the actual question? What do you think this is, on-topic??

I don't know if it is intentional, but if you want a famous economist, my best guess is that the tax collector is modeled on Alan Blinder, a professor at Princeton, and Federal Reserve Board chairman, and economic advisor to President Clinton. Do you think the picture fits?

He reminds me a bit of one of the characters from The Godfather. You know - the son of Vito Corleone who was not actually his son at all, but nonetheless still one of the most loyal to the family. The lawyer guy.

As far as I am concerned the most famous tax collector has to be the Sherrif of Nottingham, namely Prince John, the attempted usurper of King Richard's Throne.

Well, it spoils the job/name symmetry, but I actually refer to that guy as Scrooge, since he looks like every representation of Scrooge I've ever seen. Besides, if we call him Ebenezer instead of Scrooge, then they're the three E's! So that's my vote. And isn't nice to know that no tax collector has ever become famous enough to be universally recognizable?

Be real guys, we are not looking for an econmist, or a business Guru. Surely the taxman is the fiend of every businessman, not friend. Adam Smith or even Bill setag would throw if they were compared with taxmen. Prince John is the most famous taxman, but scrooge (though not a taxman) would also be apt.

Uncle Sam would be very rememberable to me. Unfortunately it might be confused with SAM missile batteries.

"I made a sam like you all suggested, but instead of getting more money, I lose 2 coins per turn."

Calling the tax collector a fiend, or count taxula ... No, no .. don't forget you're on the other side of the line in civ, he's a friend and a big one if you ask me. I would call them simply ... taxi's.

Uh... no. Then when you talk about switching to taxi's, people would probably think you we're building either the superhighways, or capitolization (taxes).

Edward, You do bring up an interesting point, though on these forums you could just try to remember to capitolize SAMs and don't capitolize uncle sams.

Taxes precipitated the revolt of nobles that led to the Magna Carta (signed by Prince John, for whom the Sherrif of Nottingham worked). Taxes precipitated the American Revolution (Boston Tea Party, King George). Taxes were a strong aspect in the call for the legislature that eventually set off the French Revolution (Salt taxes, King Louis). Compared to these, I challenge anyone to think of a positive moment in history related to collecting taxes. If there is one, the collecter is a hero worty of a label. Othererwise, those little guys are taxers (singular: taxer).

Your problem is you are looking at him from the point of view of the person being taxed. In civ, though, you are the ruler, and the reciever of all the money that your wonderful tax collectors (uncle sams ) have collected from your loyal subjects.

I reckon Greenspans is about right. Rocks isn't bad either. I have no idea why it should be "Uncle Sam". What's U.S. got to do with tax, except that he personifies a government which collects tax? By that logic we could pick any national leader - but I don't think it would fit in a game like Civ where you are not always playing America. It would be weird having Uncle Sams in an Australian government, anyway. (Although, since Malcolm, maybe not as weird as it should be).

Also, Uncle Sam wasn't a real person: Einstein and Elvis were, so it's not a good match.

How about Levi? Matthew, as in 'Gospel of ~', was also known as Levi, and was a tax collector before he became an apostle. Also, it resembles 'levy' as in 'levy taxes.' Presumably, unless you modified the game so that Calvin Klein jeans were a trade good, no one would be confused by being told that you made Levis (Leviim).
