Here is a challenging idea:

Start your civ on a 6 square island, like Japan, build as many cities as possible on it.

Stop building anything other than city improvements in 0 AD.

See how long you can last

I have tried this and am up to 800 AD; are there any other takers,

I made my map on a small map and made the 5x5 grids for all challengers and my own looked like this:
xxx|
xxx|
---|

x=Sea
|and-= Land

I had one grassland, 2 Plains, 2 Winter Squares.

Civ rating of 4%
3rd strongest civ of 8
