Geofelt sent me a scenario where you start on a one-square island with four whales. You are outside trireme-range from the other continents, so will you build the Lighthouse, go straight for navigation or just take the risk that your trireme will sink?Appropriate quote from the OCC rules: If you build your city on a hill you can't mine that hill. However, if you start mining the hill and build a city on that hill before the mine is finished you can get a mine on the city square. The majority of the voters decided that you are allowed to mine your city square. Play as the Romans. Click here to download. |

This is reminiscent of OCC7, the Polar scenario? "To the Lighthouse" then. |

Actually, I went without the lighthouse so far, but then my trireme got lost at sea. At least I got my trade routes done before it got lost at sea. |

Ain't that the truth! Just saw this thread. I'll have to crank it up tonight when I get home. Hope number one wife has plans. ------------------ Frodo lives! Better dead than "Red"... or green... or blue... or yellow... or orange... or purple... or white.

An interesting scenario with again a need to adjust the normal strategy to cope with the one-square island city (the terrain and the shield possibilities are well-conceived, geofelt ) . I took the safe option with the Lighthouse. Only two of the four allies were regular gold gifters. The last civ was not contacted until 800 AD with the Trireme busy plying the initial trade routes, although trade was a bit late.2.42 Deity AC: 1785 Monarchy: -625 Republic: -325 Democracy: 540 Lighthouse: -2150 Colossus: -675 Copernicus: 80 Shakespeare: 240 Newton: 540 Darwin: 800 Apollo: 1610 Trade routes: -275, -250, -75 Size 12: -100 Size 21: 460 Trade: -425 Construction: -775 Sanitation: 260 Refrigeration: - (not researched) Automobile: 1140 Computers: 1420 Space Flight: 1600 4000 BC Rome founded 3750 Mapmaking 3350 Pottery 2900 Seafaring 2350 Writing 2150 Lighthouse 2000 Spanish destroyed by Barbs 1900 Trireme built 1800 Hut: Horseman 1750 Ceremonial Burial Chinese: Alliance 1700 Temple 1600 Hut: 50 1350 Library 1200 Currency 975 Marketplace 900 Indians: exchange Masonry & Mysticism - Alliance 850 Germans: peace 775 Construction 725: Aztecs: Alliance 675 Colossus 650 English exchange Monarchy & Code of Laws - Alliance + gift 100 revolution 625 Govt. OCC #19 Deity MGEWe lost one trireme, luckily when it was empty, for not building the Lighthouse. The odds seemed pretty decent (25% accidents after Seafaring), land couldn't be that far away on a small map. We did have some trouble meeting the Spanish because of the accident. The AI tribes were particularly closefisted, even when we had 5 allies (!) we often couldn't get a dime to go our way. Trade was good though, our commodities were in demand - and all overseas, naturally . Got a few more techs than usual from the AI tribes, too. ================================================================ AC: 1686 Monarchy: -2850 Republic: -625 Democracy: 380 Colossus: -2250 Copernicus: -175 Shakespeare: 220 Newton: 480 Darwin: 860 Apollo: 1400 Trade routes: -675, -625, -600 Size 12: 260 Size 21: 440 Size 23: 480 Trade: -875 Construction: -400 Sanitation: 180 Refrigeration: - Automobile: 880 Computers: 1180 Space Flight: 1380 ============================================ -4000 Alphabet, Bronze Working, start mining ROME -3750 Ceremonial Burial -3550 Hill mined -3450 S2, N-Settlers join city -> S3 -3350 Warriors, Code of Laws, starting Colossus -3000 Monarchy -2900 Revolution -2850 MONARCHY -2650 Barb Trireme: "4 units destroyed" -2600 Mysticism -2450 S4 -2300 disbanded Warriors -2250 COLOSSUS, Writing -2200 Warriors -1950 Library, Currency -1700 Map Making -1650 Marketplace, Barb Trireme: "4 units destroyed" -1450 Trireme -1400 Warriors, Pottery -1250 Diplomat - waiting for Seafaring to halve the risk ... -1200 S5 -1050 Seafaring - there we go!! .... phew, land in sight -1000 Harbor -975 English, 8 techs->E, Peace, Maps, no Ally (they have The Wheel, we don't want that yet) -950 Germans, 6 techs->G, Peace, Maps, no Ally (they have Masonry) Chinese, traded for Masonry (slipped up), 9 techs->C, Maps, Ally(C) for War(G), no gift -900 Trireme -875 Trade -850 Wine -825 Indians, 7 techs->I, Peace, Maps, no Ally , Germans take Canton -750 50(h) -725 Beads, S6 -700 Japanese, 8 techs->J, Peace, Maps, no Ally , 1 tech->C, Chinese end Alliance , 1 tech->G, Cease Fire -675 Literacy, Hides to Osaka (d,206), everybody is hostile now -650 Hides, The Republic, Revolution, di Warriors -625 Hides, REPUBLIC, Wine to Osaka (d,206) -600 Mathematics, empty Trireme lost at sea , Beads to London (d,209), di Warriors, N-Legion(h) -575 Hides, Astronomy, We Love , N-Settlers(h) - hmmmm ... -550 S7 -525 Gold, We Love ends -500 Food -475 Food, N-Settlers join city -> S8, di Trireme -450 Food, Navigation -425 Caravel, finally under 50 gold -400 4 techs->G, traded for Construction, 6 techs->E, traded for The Wheel and Horseback Riding, Maps, Ally , 5 techs->J, traded for Iron Working and Warrior Code, Maps, no Ally , 9 techs->I, Maps, no Ally , 10 techs->C, Maps, Ally for War(G), no gift -350 Gold to Beijing (d,186), 100(h) -325 Aquaduct -300 S9, Barb Leader (150) -275 Food -250 Banking -225 Bank -200 1 tech->J,I, 5 techs->G, Cease Fire -175 COPERNICUS' OBSERVATORY -125 Philosophy -> University, 4,3 techs->E,C, Maps, -,25 (pfft) -100 Spanish, 19(!) techs->S, Peace, Maps, Ally, no gift -75 Beads -50 Hides to Madrid (d,212), Germans: GREAT LIBRARY, Indians: PYRAMIDS -25 University, Economics, Hides to Madrid (d,212), Japanese : HANGING GARDENS 1 3 techs->J, Ally!! Well, it could have been disastrous, but like I said the odds seemed to be in my favour. On a large map, I would have waited until Navigation before setting out, I'm thinking. A modification of Paul's route could be to build Hanging Gardens instead of Colossus, skip Literacy and The Republic, and go for Seafaring and Navigation asap. He could probably have traded for at least Literacy and Currency. ------------------ If you have no feet, don't walk on fire |

A "map clicking" told me there was land nearby in 2 directions. So I decided to get Seafaring and risk it.My first load made it but my second load didn't.I skipped Monarchy as this seemed like the perfect one to do it in. I built Shake's first as gold was a little short.Worked out ok.I originally thought I might go from 8>21 but there was too much to do. I did get alliances but only Spain ever coughed up. I got the largest bonus' from caravan/freight that I can recall in an OCC game.2 gold each brought in 1000+ deity 2.42 AC-1777AD

I guess vik's away although I'm not sure of the whereabouts of Tom dM and Oldman. What about SG(1)?On the other hand there seems to be lots of expressions of interest in OCC itself. Maybe we should reassure potential starters that this is not a competitive forum, just a fun one with luck playing a major part in the results |

Well, despite a good start and managing not to lose any loaded triremes, this one turned out pretty average. I didn't manage to get more than 1 alliance which didn't help much and very nearly got hammered at the end when the Japanese decided to attack my city which only had freights in it. What's the secret you guys? Am I just not being pushy enough with the AI? 2.42 Deity AC 1833 Monarchy: -2850 Republic: -425 Democracy: 380 Colossus: -2400 Copernicus: 225 Shakespeare: 160 Newton: 680 Darwin: 1080 Apollo: 1756 Trade routes: -825, -800, -675 Size 12: 40 Size 21: 340 Trade: -1800 Construction: -675 Sanitation: 20 Refrigeration: - (not researched) Automobile: 1080 Computers: 1590 Space Flight: 1754

Redbarron: I've had a quick look at your log and the point that struck me was:Your contact with other civs was a bit late, the Spanish in 825 BC and the next two from 380 AD and the fourth not till 1520 AD. Probably you should have researched Mapmaking earlier and built your Trireme well before 1050 BC. The loss of opportunities for tech gifts and exchanges and the slower science rates are obvious minuses that arise from both the lateness, and the lack of contact with the remaining civs. I guess the early destruction of the Indian and Sioux civs didn't help, assuming the second generation replacements were less accessibly located. Anyway great to have another complete the course in the light of Smash's concern about the diminishing fortnight band .

You never know how a game will unfold. There is "luck".In my game I got Burial,Mysticism and Masonary thru trading just when I needed them.Saved me a bunch of turns.Later I picked up Monarchy,Feudalism and Atomic Theory.Thats at least another 6 turns. Yes,apparently contact is very important. With all civs contacted, gifting techs is more effective in keeping research requirements lower. Not to mention any financial help that may come your way thru alliances. Gold is very important to OCC.You want to rush everything if possible. Its not so easy to raise gold when you are maxing science almost all game.Alliance gifts or tribute can take handfuls of turns off. It seems funny that someone that lands a 1 city deity game in 1833 is somewhat unsatisfied. |

I'm pretty busy at work these days, and have sort of fallen off the civ-playing/occ bandwagon. Probably the same for oldman and sg1. |

You've left a bit of a legacy - the Tom de Mille Effect will be in the minds of OCCers for a long time to come. I hope both the interruption of work and the civ2-OCC saturation are temporary - we need the imaginative and challenging scenarios to keep the fortnight games alive. If you ever feel nostalgic, the wagon and its band await you---- Edit: Oops transposed post

Looks like the off-season for the Fortnightly games with the main scenarists away. Perhaps there may some among the many extant scenario creators who may wish to design something in this "challenging" field? |
