Just emailed Paul my latest scenario. You have only one opponent in this game, with AI restarts set to off. So don't kill off your opponent, or the game will end. Barbarian activity is set to one below raging hordes (you will get 100 gold per barb leader). I tested the scenario with 3 different barb settings, and found the middle one to be about right. |

Tom: I figure if you let the Romans grow it will attack you. So you must not let it grow while must not kill it . |

Ah, but if you don't let the Romans grow somewhat, your trade routes will suffer. |

You can build all wonders you want if you can sabotage the Roman wonder building process . If you build road to connect your city with Roman cities, then the roman caravans will come and update your trade commodity since you are the only one they can trade with. |

Interesting game. I did have some barb problems. They pillaged my land and killed my NON-settler. Luckily that was after I had WLTCD-ed to 21 and not too long before explosives, so it didn't cause too much damage. The Roman sneak attacks caused some more trouble and delayed my spaceship building a bit. They also killed my engineers, so pollution led to global warming. I never had that in an OCC game before. Worse was the fact that they also killed most of my caravans which were parked on the shore as protection against barb landings. It was a good thing that I built citywalls because I would have been dead without them. Claustrophobic togetherness – very realistic simulation of Cyprus, Tom; wish there were the Mediterranean lands to explore though! I gave in to the temptation to get Leo’s Workshop on the wrong assumption that the trireme upgrades might bring in the goodies from huts more quickly. Anyway it gave a valuable none-Engineer and two life-saving Musketeers. While building the SS parts I had to waste a few turns on defence with the menacing Romans so close. My extra pair of Engineers did help prevent any global warming problems. There was a lot of Roman Diplo sabotage activity including the stealing of Plastics and the destruction of my Marketplace, Library and Research Lab. Interestingly enough the last-named didn’t seem to affect the rate but it was not important at the end of the SS rush. Wish one could form an alliance with the Romans though – all I ever got from them was one lousy tribute of 100 gold! This is one game where Barbs were welcome - a regular source of gold, though devalued by 33%. In any case, when they landed on the Roman side, the Barb Leaders mostly got clobbered by the Roman units although my trireme did manage some lucrative ramming. 2.42 Deity

thoughts: barbarians were extremely annoying - they kept landing on my specials and pillaging them - took forever to get enough units built up to steer them over to the romans, and even then they would land and attack my caravans/freights (i lost 20 to attacks between the romans and barbs) Also, I REALLY should have built a granary. with all the barb landings and roman land stealing i had several famines due to growth. I would put myself in a food deficit to prevent growing, and enemy units would force me to grow, then pillage and force a food deficit... Also, I think i may try and discover astronomy a tad earlier couldn't figure out why i was getting 5-6 turns per tech, then saw i had bypassed astronomy Also should have watched science closer - with all the AI units using my land, i was getting 3 turns instead of 2 a lot, but still could have guaranteed 2 by dropping the science - i was never in need of gold except to buy AI units for defense and i would have had to turn off science like i did to get the legion, but for muchh longer time periods). I've now won 2 out of 2 games in OCC, but still have an ICS mindset which keeps creeping into how i research techs and conduct diplomacy... probably why i have 2 mid 20th century landings. didn't gift anything to the romans (they refused my science most of the time), although they did demand some, which i gave some of the time, and lots of gold, which i refused, and started a war, continued off and on for most of the game, basically gave up on diplomacy after that. I did manage to forcibly claim enough land for 80 shield production, and when the romans took some of that back during their biggest offensive, they killed enough of my supported units to keep it at 80 production. Fortressed freights and Leo upgrades saved the day on more than 1 occasion I had 17 freights left over so i could have built more wonders than i did, and should have built the hanging gardens given my late democracy change. Well, this was my first OCC attempt. I don't have the detailed logs that you guys keep (maybe next time), but I landed in 1945 playing MGE. The Romans never gave me a dime, and kept demanding everything from me. I rush-bought like crazy in order to keep my treasury small. If my treasury had any size, they demanded a gift! The barbs got my NON settler which really hampered things for a bit. Next time, I'll try out v2.42 of the non-MGE version and see how it plays. This is fun!BTW, I grew via WLT*D and had Engineers and Farmland everywhere. Then I changed to mine some Farmland into Forests and I lost all my Engineers to famine! How are you guys dealing with this issue? Do you limit growth via WLT*D to match your future terrain? I only got to 80 shields at the very end of the game, so a lot of my structurals took 2 turns instead of 1. [This message has been edited by inca911 (edited August 11, 2000).] |

inca911, I doubt there would have been much difference between MGE and 242 for this scenario (the romans kept attacking me when I was playing). I think the best thing to have done would have been to build a fort next to the Romans and put a couple of defensive units in it. Then sign a cease fires, but not a treaty.I unusally do a bit of pre planning about how many squares I'm going to forest at the end for production. I take theat into account when deciding how much to grow the city after refrigeration. |

Well, ideally, you only grow via WL's, not by natural growth once a republic (something i couldn't seem to controll this game), so you should have a reasonably full food storage for the end game. This will allow you to opperate at a food deficit for a long time (and get those extra specialists in action). So yes, you try and match growth to future potential, but not exactly. My way to dealing with impending famine was to shrink the city by building engineers, so at all times I had at least 3 engineers out there (including my upgraded NON settlers which i was lucky enough to hang on to) I was constantly scouting with diplomats and caravans along the coastline to preserve my settlers. A little trick I used was to always click on my settlers at the end of the turn so that they had the option of moving somewhere else, or finishing the job they had started each turn. Now if i can just remember which techs to research As for how to handle diplomacy, ask someone else |

This is also a central concern of mine now, when in one of the earlier OCC games I lost all my engineers by growing my city too large. I now have my special OCC spreadsheet to do the calculations. Interestingly enough in this game OCC15 because of the overlapping terrain, the Romans terraformed the forests to plains including the silk to wheat - great for the early expansion phase but it was a job to keep their engineers from doing the same again (particularly the silk) at the end game. |

The main reason I finished only 10-15 turns behind Paul despite my slower initial research is that I had no war with the Romans throughout the game. Several times that cost me a lot of money. . .By end-game I was very careful to avoid cleaning up pollution if that meant the Romans could contact me. I also built Leonardo's Workshop, just to upgrade my archer and one NONE-settler. It seemed worthwhile in this game. I had a fairly tough time in this one.I only got 2 turns after 1846 when I traded for Atomic Theory. It changed drastically. Before that I could not manage 2 turns at 100%.After- 2 turns at 60%-strange.No major gifting just a straight up trade. I did manage to keep my settler alive until very late.Had many close calls though. The Romans were extremely helpful in responding to barb attacks. They were also very helpful with irrigation and roads/rails. I gave up trying to maintain that river silk. They would have had units all over my city all game with a ceasefire so I decided to let them change it,irrigate and farm it while I changed the other wheat they couldn't reach. Barb and Roman intrusions wreaked havoc on "we love" days.Stopped and started way too many times. I bribed a leader early and set up an embassy. Was useful.I can't beleive how many times the Romans changed governments.AND they kept changing to despo!Terrible for my trade routes. Hiya! So, what notable events must you keep track of in order to be included in Paul's comparison table? Also, is v2.42 generally the OCC platform of choice? I used MGE for my only OCC game so far and the AI's hostility is quite an issue when attempting to get tribute/alliance/tech trades. Maybe next OCC game I won't lose my Engineers to famine!! |

In order to be in the table you must at least keep track of all the events that are mentioned in the table. Most people here put those in short summaries at the top of their logs; in my case those were: quote:
 AC: 1871Monarchy: -2450 Republic: -725 Democracy: 1020 Colossus: -1850 Coeprnicus: 20 Shakespeare: 300 Newton: 740 Darwin: 1580 Apollo: 1798 Trade routes: -850, -775, -725 Size 12: -275 Size 21: 580 Trade: -1100 Constrcution: -525 Sanitation: 380 Refrigeration: 1260 Automobile: 1580 Computer: 1758 Space Flight: 1796
 |
For our full logs we keep some more details; just check them out to see what's in them. OCC games are usually played with version 2.42 because the AI is generally more hostile in MGE. |

Hey Paul,do you think you could post a chart with the dates corresponding to selected turn numbers on your OCC page, maybe having a link to it from the comparison tables? It seems like i remember seeing one somewhere in this forum but don't remember where, and that would certainly make things easier for the newer OCCer's to interpret it. Working through the OCC games I started printing out the comparison tables from my completed games, but I was constantly converting between the dates in my logs and the turn numbers in the table. And as a side note to comparison tables, once you come close to what other good OCCers have done, it really is a big help to see where you went wrong. In #9 (my most recently finished game), I can see that the stretch from sanitation to refrigeration is where I lost it. I was actually first to size 21, and first to Shakes, but was one of the slowest to go from sanitation to refrigeration. Maybe I really should have built Darwins... Look out in #16, I may be a force to contend with ------------------ April Cantor: Sire, in order to expand further we must first gain favor of the King SCG: darn, I've never really got the hang of that tribute thing, guess it will be a long time until i make prince *goes off and starts gifting gold and techs* |

I already have such a list on my site: http://members.home.nl/paulvdb/turns.htm After oedo's discovery about revolutions I just updated the list with asterisks behind the turns in which new governments will be established. |

SCG: No doubt about it, once on the learning curve, the snowball effect comes into play.I've termed the comparison learning "incremental learning". I've found that playing through the extant comparison games up to a certain stage and comparing where I am, is extremely helpful. So my first objective stage was something like Republic Govt. and when I've learnt where my mistakes were, the next stage would be "Democracy" and so on. Although the "incidents" in each fortnightly comparison game would be apparent from the reading of the logs, it would also be interesting to have a little addendum to the table like "major problems" eg global warming, Barb activity...which give an insight into the result achieved. |

SCG, you should go for refrigeration before going for railroad. Your above statement suggests you detoured to railroad, which would explain why you were slower than others. |

good catch, i checked some of my logs, and while i went for sanitation before railroad in some of the games, i didn't in that one. Kind of a surprise for me as I'm one of those who seems to focus on growth over science more than some of the others here. I'm still trying to decide whether I'd rather have wheat or silk - i'm starting to lean towards wheat at this point. Also I think I may be leaning to wine over gold (i know, they don't convert to each other), although that will take a bit more testing. ------------------ April Cantor: Sire, in order to expand further we must first gain favor of the King SCG: darn, I've never really got the hang of that tribute thing, guess it will be a long time until i make prince *goes off and starts gifting gold and techs* |

And here we were tending towards silk over wheat. My goblins and I, that is - go to my home page to find out more Btw I tried another strategy for this scenario: going to Republic straight away, bypassing Monarchy. We reached AC in 1891. I'm playing #15 a third time; now we give all our new tech to the Romans right away, instead of trying to trade (which is HARD in MGE!), in order to keep the lagging-behind bonus. They won't start wonders anyway. Btw, has anyone seen Nicosia grow beyond size 8? In my games, they never build in aquaduct, while they do have plenty of extra food. They simply keep making military units (and explorers, yuck!) to throw them away at my defence. - Rib - ------------------ If you have no feet, don't walk on fire |

Actually, i think the problem with all the explorers we saw was because the Romans are agressive exansionist. Perhaps this scenario should have taken place on a small Japanese island, since the Japanese are agressive perfectionist. That or edited the rules.txt to make the romans perfectionist. I might give #15 another go sometime now that I have about 10 OCC games under my belt instead of just 1 when i did it the first time. ------------------ April Cantor: Sire, in order to expand further we must first gain favor of the King SCG: darn, I've never really got the hang of that tribute thing, guess it will be a long time until i make prince *goes off and starts gifting gold and techs* | |
