I feel it only right to exprss my thanks to everyone in this group. Making use of many of the tips and suggestions found in various of the threads here, I ended up winning my first game in a long while last night.

I arrived at AC in the year 1915, and ended with a final score of 1058.

I don't imagine that score is much to brag about, since I've been reading people doing great things against the AI. It is, however, great for me.

Now I make sure that wasn't a fluke, then after that I make the game a little tougher, add another Civ. Or worse barbarian activity.

Anyhow, thanks again.

Gee, with all the differences of opinions, and many different strategies presented here, one wonders how anybody could digest it all and come up with a single cohesive startegy that would work

Congratulations. I continue to learn new stuff about this old game all the time by reading these threads. Keep up the winning streak!

Honestly, I'm flattered, have it on me and say no more about it.

Ahh, there's always a need to do it one more time, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I think exactly the same thing every time I start a new game. Then I do it again and again. Congrats!

Jim, glad all our disparate opinions helped. I often ask questions with the same results. The responses may vary greatly, but I always learn from even contradictory ideas.

I guess it is that there are so many different ways to win (or lose, *s*) that all of them have merit. It's what matches your natural inclinations that will work for you best.

I am constantly amazed what one player can do with few cities and a lot of horsemen, or another can do with only defensive units and engineers. Whatever strategy suits you most is what you will practice, and of course whatever you practice most will be what you get better at.

I've never seen a game with such a wide range of viable strategies, and I think that is what keeps me here! I hope that every single player ocassionally runs into someone with a very different specialty and says "How does he/she *DO* that"?!

I share Jim W's feeling of appreciation. When I first got Civ2, I roamed a dozen Civ sites. I picked up FAQs, tips, and strategy guides. Most of it helped to one degree or another.

However this site is different. The exchange of ideas is more dynamic and, I think, more insightful.

Also I'm really impressed with the -- well, for lack of a better word, I'll call it the "sociability" of the participants. There's a degree of cooperation and helpfulness that I certainly appreciate.

Campo... You have obviously missed some of the more heated threads

But overall, you are right. We have a good mix of experience here. And most people are just looking for a place to exchange ideas. And this is a great place for it!
