This has happened before but I was not sure. Again today I had a unit bribed by the AI - and I was a democracy! Has anyone else had this happen?

yes.Not only that but the units that did the bribing were a crusader and, later on, a partisan.Pretty rare but it does happen.I've only seen it on deity level.

I'm not sure what did the bribe because the times it has happened the units were next to stacks or cities. I'd get the message and wonder if I've fallen out of democracy. Everything looked ok the first time so I figured I must be half asleep and missed something but it happened again today. Nice little advantage the AI has.

I think I have lost a unit to AI bribery while in democracy. I also did a double take, and figured I missed something. Is it possible that a unit supported by a city in revolt is vulnerable?
Also, ANY ai unit can bribe. The AI particularly likes to bribe good units fortified on mountains. If you have been bribing ai cities, be prepared to lose one of your own to more active AI bribery.

So has anyone had the AI bribe a stack of units away from them? I'd be pretty annoyed if a pair of moutaintop pikemen were bribed away from me.

I thought it was only cities that could not be bribed under democracy, but that units were always fair game. I, too, have had units bribed by non-dips or spies, but never had stacked units bribed.

Both cities and units are vulnerable under democracy. However, it may be possible that units supported by "none" can be bribed? Or as suggested earlier, perhaps units supported by cities currently in revolt can also be bribed.

I always thought that if you were a Democracy your units and cities were safe from bribery EXCEPT at Deity level. I'm not sure though.

I've also lost units to AI bribery while under Democracy. My cities were always in perfect order when this occured. Actually it use to happen quite frequently to me when I forget to stack units, perhaps because I frequently bribe away cities and key units from the AI and tend to send scouting parties into the AI civ. I have never, however, lost a stack of units to bribery under any form of government. Nor have I ever lost a city to bribery under Democracy. I think a stack of units is immune to bribery under all government levels, and I think cities are immune to bribery under Democracy at all difficulty levels. Perhaps the high difficulty level of Deity makes units not immune to bribery whilst under Democracy, but I have little non-Deity play time for comparison. Anyone out there seeing Democratic units being bribed at lower difficulty levels?

Not at King level; at this level the AI rarely bribes my troops, and has never bribed a city unless it built it. Has anyone seen the AI 'recruit' barbarians? If so, at what level?

After buying MPG recently, I had a none unit bribed during a democracy. But I later heard that I needed a patch. Since then, I've never had a unit bribed or city bribed during democracy.

I think it was MPG that required a patch for this bribery bug. Prior to MPG, I had V1.07 and NEVER was a unit bribed under democracy. Again, if memory serves me, in the readme file of the patch, it actually mentions this bribe bug as fixed in the patch.

AU

Edited to include the patch name V1.3 but good luck finding it ...

Can I echo what Au has said above - I have NEVER had units or cities bribed when in Democracy at Deity and I play almost exclusively v2.42 - I have not seen it with MP, CiC or FW, but have considerably less playing time in with these variants.

I was playing MGE when my troop bribery incidents occurred, and I have not downloaded a patch. I will get the patch and see if my problem goes away. It is certainly a plausible explanation for the differences in what people are seeing. Thanks, Aurelius!

Hi Inca,

First time I found this patch, it was at Apolyton ( I swear!), but since then it has disappeared. I finally found a patch at Microprose technical support.

Go to http://support.microprose.com/ and look for FTP in the left margin. In the list of many patches to the right, look for CivIIMultiUpdatev1.3.exe

Here is a readme file regarding the problem:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Patch 1.3 Notes
----------------------------------------------------------------------

* The Casualty Timeline is now available in both hotseat and single
player modes of play. In a hotseat game, this can be used to
determine unit losses at the start of a turn.

* Bribing of units in a democracy now functions correctly in all
cases.

* The chat window and trading windows will now re-center when a player
executes the "Arrange Windows" command from the "View" pulldown. This
allows the these windows to be brought back into view when they "jump"
off the edge of the screen.

* In a hotseat game, attitude values for a human player towards other
players will NOT change while it is NOT that human's turn. They should
be adjusted manually in the "Foreign Minister" window.
