Unitil recently I avoided 1x 1x games like the plague as carnide can attest. However, I have joined a 1x 1x diety game and am lost as to what units to build when. For instance, being that 1x 1x takes FOREVER to produce a unit, when should I start to build settlers vs military units?? When is a good time to start building temples?? Keeping in mind that I believe the key to winning is to have a large empire. or an you win with a small civ??

Depends how much risk you want to take...
I would still build one warrior first, and then start cranking out settlers. Temples are nice... later... No matter what you are playing, expansion wins games.

empress i build two warriors first ... one for hut tipping and one for martial law and then start cranking settlers...... expansion as Ming stated is crucial..... i like to research horse first especially on a small map .... allows one to find the enemy, huts , and potential city sites faster.... the only drawback is it slows the road to Monarchy and doesnt' allow construction of a wonder...... researching bronze before horse is an old strat which allow the building of colossus then switched to whatever later..... but doesn't allow you to attack barbs or other civs and the movement is slower...... five cities in despotism... and twelve in monarchy although i tend to through that out the window and just keep building......

No matter what settings I play, the first unit I build is a horseman. There are two exceptions from that rule.

First exception: I am lucky and find two or more fast units under goody huts before I found my first capital. Then there is no need anymore for building further exploring units.

Second exception: I am unlucky and find a tech under a goody hut before I get to horsebackriding.

After that I build three martial law units and start building a wonder in my capital. The other city builds a horseman, then a martial law unit then a settler...

I havenīt seen any better starting strategy so far. Maybe I change my mind after this thread became bigger

My styple is similar to the above... exploring unit, martial law, settlers.
Often I will build a temple when I have a perfectly happy size 3 city with three martial law units, and nowhere to send settlers to nearby. If the city has little potencial I would use it for building units for other cities or settlers for nearby improvements.

1 unhappy citizen for city #5 in despo.

3 units keep a size 4 city content in Monarchy.5 with temple.6 with temple and Mystism. After that hire specialists or build settlers or set workers so little or no more food is produced. You will see additional unhappies somewhere between city 7 and city 12.It has to do with # of cities, corruption and distance from capitol.
Early expansionists are well served by The Hanging Gardens.Great when you start to see size 1 unhappies...cept with Gardens you wont see them until somewhere between 10-16 cities usually.

you seem to manage Republics just fine

I agree with horsemen first. Explore the map and knock over huts. Knowledge is power. I can't resist quoting a song from one of my kids' favorite shows, "Little Bear":

We won't give up 'til we're through.
That's what explorers do.
Who's afraid? Who's afraid?
Not me, are you?

Well, I dont play MP much anymore - takes too long. So... might as well tell everyone how I play. My best games I built few if any defenses. Everything was put into wonders and science. It's my experience that few people really go after you with a large force. Most people also put everything into science and wonders. So forget the big defensive units - by the time you really need them they are probably out-dated anyway.

When I did build armies it was fun - but after the first night I find myself in trouble behind in techs and having to support an old, large army thats basicly worthless.

Ming - that one game where I stayed even with you (thats the best duel I've ever been in), I built almost no units. You could have destroyed me probably pretty easy with just a few units. But maybe I could have defended with all the rivers I had. I would continue but I fold - MP is just to stressful. Damn, every turn has to be your very best game - I can't take it!!!!

Horses do let you explore more quickly, but you can explore with a phalanx too. I prefer the defense bronze gives.
Unless you want to stockpile warriors in your city, temples are necessary early in deity. If you like unhappy citizens, then it doesn't matter.

I don't mind exploring with warriors...
If you lose them, you don't really lose much.

Yes, horses are better, but I don't usually take it as an early science till after I have monarchy. But, I don't mind when I get it from a hut

Empress in Republic you need but one unit.... additional ones only eat support costs in the forms of shields.... fortified units in a fort three squares from your city do not cause unhappiness.... any unit more than one from a city causes one unhappy person... unlike monarchy there is no martial law in a Rep or demo
