I notice that cities with or without walls are different (for most of you it is not a news but maybe somebody doesn't know). But I can't tell if the city has other things, like coastal fortress, airport, etc. Anyway, you don't need to waste a diplo to check if a city has walls, that's for sure.

The difference is: cities with walls have walls in their icons.

I pats myself on the back for knowing that cities with walls can be distinguished by their icons. I sincerely regret that it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to my tres ordinaire play.

Xin Yu has played the game forever. He is one of the leading experts on the game. But this subject came up in another thread, and as usual for Xin, he wanted to make sure the new people were aware of it. You can always count on him to figure out all the strange stuff. I even learn new things from him on occasion, and I also have played forever

Xin doesn't need to hustle... He plays with our bunch all the time (assuming he ever gets a home connection again)

But now that you mention it... WAIT A MINUTE

And just to screw you around completely wallwise, when you build the GW (if you're so inclined), every new city you build has a wall in its icon, even though there isn't a wall there in reality. Which makes checking and building real walls in your pseudo-walled cities (if you're so inclined) after the expiry of GW a real pain in the ... wall.

Are my eyes (and or memory) deceiving me or does the capital city of a civilisation have the icon normally used by a city of greater size than it (the capital) currently is. Sorry about the dispicable grammar - I'm shattered this morning.

You are right. The Capital is never a "small city" ie the left most graphic in cities.gif
(walled or not).

Thanks guys. Here is a true story of "pain in the wall". Me and my ally were planning to take a city. Since there was only one narrow land bridge towards it, I used two settlers to build a road through it while my ally was building vet elephants. Then I gave a diplo and a settler to my ally for him to use and moved all my units out of the way. (I could not use the diplo myself since his elephants were on the way). I asked him to steal literacy for me (from MPE I knew this was the only tech I did not have), but he investigated the city instead (he said he could not afford to 'lose the elephants to the walls'). It turned out there's no walls, so he took the city with ease (8 vet elephants and 4 vet pikemen against one non-vet phalanx). However my 300+ shields were stucked in my largest city, no where to go -- I was one turn late for the wonder.

XY - Love it. One of the nicest I've heard. I have a sort of other side of the coin story. Last night, in one turn, I hurled 11 Crusaders (4 of them vets) and 3 Dumbos (all vets) at a Great Walled Viking city. Two Viking phalanx units saw them off comfortably.

SG - Yes, Miner's obviously brighter than I am. Or Miner was in a similar condition to you and was able to interpret. Bridge Club and ice on the roads, hm? I thought you might've been shattered re the flannelled chappies in South Africa.
