1. I usually play on a large map with no free techs so you may have to adjust the following to fit your game.2. The way I keep the unhappiness under control in Deity is to set science to 60% after founding my capital and to set the worker on a trade rich location as long as I can still get at least one food and one shield. Have the city start building a warrior. This takes 5 to 10 turns and usually give me an advance within 6 turns.
3. Research Pottery, Burial, Bronze in that order when ever possible. Pottery is one of those "Disappearing Techs" so I want it first if at all possible. My intent is to build HG and COL in the same city. This way I can use the combination of WLTLD and COL to really push the science or taxes whichever I need most at the time and have that ability last for close to half of the game.
4. While that first warrior is building I have the second settler run around popping huts or if I find an even better city location that is immediately shield rich and with the potential for excellent trade I'll stop and build my second city so that I can put HG and COL here instead of in the capital. Later I may or may not relocate the palace to this city.
5. Any good defensive units from huts get sent back to defend my capital and/or HG city.
6. To build wonders before I have caravans I use warriors from other cities and just disband them to help build the wonder. The other advantage to HG is your first citizen is a happy even if he started out double unhappy because of other factors.
7. Until I get HG built I have my cities turn out: Warrior, Temple, settler and then warriors for city defense and wonder building. Once HG is built I use the best defender in place of warriors and send the warriors over to be disbanded for COL.
8. If I have to move off my prefered tech line for any reason I use the Alphabet, Code of Laws, Writing line because I want to get to Philosophy as so as I can. By getting Philosophy first I can usually pickup either Monarchy or Monotheism for free.
