1st:
Anyone seen the film "Hamburger Hill" bout the Nam War ? When US infantry desperately bleeds out on a fortified strong-point on a hill, only to conquer it and see: 1000s of other hills.
The French built the Maginot fortress line
to defend them and the Germans just moved around the edge of it through Belgium.
Russian infantry charges hooked arm to arm
screaming "Urraeh" into German MG fire in WWII till the bodies stacked that high they had cover ?
The Persians lost 10,000s of men against 300
Spartans that defended the narrow of the Thermopyles, till they found a traitor that lead them round it.
A million men were lost in Verdun (1916) alone on the German side when they tried to
bleed the French and British dry on their
STRONGEST point.
The Allies landing in the Normandy faced a
hedgemaze that allowed total chaos and to stop em quite a time.
The Allies landing in Sicily were delayed 2 months (!!!) by retreating paradrop troops
that were really outnumbered.
In the Civil War units were battered and outbleeded when storming above open terrain
against fortified hills.
The Allied front in Italy was held back by
an inferior number of troops that had the mountains helping them to defend..
and made no real advances till Germany collapsed in 1945 though the push from West
and East, but surely not from Italy

SOOOO:
------
How stupid is the AI compared to real strategists (so-called i would admit)
1)
Generals tend to love strongpoints more than their men.
2)
Preferably Allied WWII generals knew even less bout terrain usage (Casserine Pass)
3)
Good strategists are few
4)
The game doesn´t even try to simulate the real effects of mobile warfare or combined arms

What really is baffling me bout the AI is the
movement !!! If you play Mediterranean the
AI (your own for movement automation(Go To))
is not able to move your units from Germany to North Africa on railroad tracks, even if you built them 3 squares wide!!!
And worse, if u use units like tanks, with higher movement factors, he even tries to use
shortcuts by roads, even when all the way is
railroad !!!!!!!!
It´s surely a MESS moving a 100-unit army for
blitzkrieg, I tell you !!!

P.S.:
The AI may not even be called so.
The 1st sign of intelligence is LEARNING.
They built chess computers able to beat Kasparov, and the more they beat him, they better they get.
Civ doesn´t use an AI at all, there´s simply
a small list of strategies, that only work against inexperienced players.

Simply put the AI is pretty stupid although repeated spies from AI prove to be quite annoying and stupid.

Here's a tale of AI stupidity.

Once upon a time (GMT+1 hour last night) in a galaxy far, far away (cyberspace) three little piggies wanted to play MP. Let's call them Bird, Carolus Rex and Sten Sture...

A couple of hours into the game the middle pig, Carolus Rex, was thrown back out into the real world. Meanwhile the big bad AI wolf huffed and puffed and messed up the Romans pretty bad. Here's what happened.

i) Since the big bad AI wolfe never experience unhappinness problems every citizen in every city was put to work. When the middle pig came back in power, every city therefore revolted.

ii) The capitol (Carolusville) had built a "150+ shields" temple. Meaning that the AI switched from a wonder carefully being built (under the middle pig's strict supervision) to a temple, only to start on a wonder again when the temple was completed. Praise the lord...

iii) A diplo trained to buy back a city from the evil barbs mysteriously disappeared, delaying the happy reunion a couple of turns as a new chargé d'affaires had to be appointed.

Sigh...

Another example of AI as well as human stupidity.

Due to incompetence on the part of yours truly, an evil Zulu diplomat stole espionage and immediately gave the advance to the horrible Vikings. Since I was at war with both civilizations I thought this would mean big trouble. Since that time I have played about fifteen turns and have yet to see a single Zulu or Viking spy.

Hm...

Think I'll have to join forces with the fabulous French to rid that game from the Conquistadores
