Hopefully the Firaxis people will have more say than him. The bomber thing isn't a cheat per se, but it isn't realistic either. |

While I agree with your opinion... My job is to point out these things to the designers. It is their job to determine if it fits into the game. I hope some didn't realize what an advantage this can be, and decide not to do it in the next version. |

New summaries are due at the end of August. If anybody has any last comments or thoughts, now is the time to bring them up. It seems lately, the MP community is really concerned about cheating... for good reason. Nothing worse than trying to play a game for fun, and having somebody cheat. We've heard of programs that allow to you to hack in make changes, and people who modify the game between sessions. What do people think. Is there a way to stop this? Maybe a feature that is incorporated in the game that automatically saves, and the host machine automatically checks the other players save files to see if there are any differences, and then alerts you if there is a problem. Any other thoughts or solutions that we can pass on to make civIII a lot safer from hacking? |

Ming,Regarding MP cheating: I think it's a case where you can never stop someone with enough time and talent from hacking the game, but it should be relatively easy to make it a lot more difficult. How about this: allow each player to turn on a "mirror save" button. Each time the host saves the game (including autosave), the save file gets sent down the pipe to each of the other players who want it. Then they can compare files when the game starts back up (maybe need a "verify save file" option here). If the host's connection mysteriously drops out, you go back to the last autosave. If you are really paranoid, it would be nice to have an option that saved every autosave file as a unique name. Then you could back and do a post mortem if you think you got hosed. |

Ming: Even if this group is unable to come up with the means to prevent MP cheating (Lord knows I don't have a clue about this kind of stuff), at least we need to emphasize that it happens and that it is a big concern. As best we can, we can explain the known ways of cheating and at least hope the programmers can figure out workable solutions. That's certainly not to say the above suggestions, and those seen elsewhere, aren't good or won't work. |

I agree.. some of the suggestions to stop it are good ones. And again, any that we can point out will give the designers a chance to think about them. But nobody can stop the slick cheating programs. I would settle for a way to know that cheating is occuring. Keep those suggestions going. Again, my next (and who knows, maybe last) summary is due at the end of the month. Lets try to use these last few days to expand on any other ways to catch/stop cheating. Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread. I've learned a lot, and I hope the designers do to. Now, let's finish the job. |

Mention the host tech advantage in MP games. I don't know whether that's endemic to Civ II and MP only, but it should be avoided if the Firaxis code is similar. |

A very good thread i discovered many things that i didnt know before. I have a few things that i would like to bring up. First the spy trick, if u are playing a multiplayer game, and at the time u are almost done with the United Nations, then a spy shows up and destroies it. But there is a way to prevent this, just go inside the city when u see the spy, let him destroy ur work, then change what to build back to united nations, whoops, now u have as many sheilds as before. This problem is a minor bug but can be very good one in the begining of the game when a diplomat does this. This includes whatever improvemnt unit u are building at the time. Of course this cheat ocurrs thanx to lag problems. Another anyoning thing is when u try to bribe a unit and the other player goes in to the units homecity and disband it. U will lose your unit and money on this. Many cheats or so called cheats during bad lag, can easily be removed. Let all the players send their moves to the host after their turn, then u will get rid of these dirty tricks and the lag!! I dont know if this is a relevant issue when making civ3, and i havent seen anyone saying anything about this before, if so u have to excuse me for not taking notice. -Bergman- |

I just encountered a quirk I haven't seen reported yet. I traded maps with the Aztecs, then moved the cursor into the newly revealed territory to explore a little. There was one Aztec city and one barbarian city. When I moved my cursor over the barbarian city, the window under the world map showed a barbarian archer. When I moved the cursor over the Aztec city, it showed an Aztec warrior. I'm trying to play an honest game, so I didn't go into cheat mode to double check, but I'll bet you a doughnut that the cursor was showing me the troops present in these cities, as if they had been my own cities. |

It IS possible to create non units after ALL players turns. Not just the player before you.Not that I would ever do this or anything but I've SEEN it.This can be up to 6 units per round! |

While it seems that version 2.0 is done, and who knows if we are ever going to do version 3, I'd still love to keep this going. Many people have claimed to have learned alot, so keep those posts coming. |

I haven't been checking this thread for a while and I don't have the time to catch up, so I'm sorry if this is old news.Belongs to free info I guess. When an enemy caravelle and the unit it carries are put to sleep, clicking on it reveals which unit it is carrying. Don't know how general this is (valid for all types of transports, if it works with more than one unit on the ship, if it matters if it's a non-sleeping transport and/or unit etc). What's happening here now? The lists have been sent in, but is it over now? Carolus |

What exactly do you mean? I've clicked on enemy caravels and all I see is the caravel (active). And the only time I see a sentried AI ship is in a city, so I only see that if I investigate the city. Do you use an older version of civ2, or is it a multiplayer or TOT thing? |

Theben, it was with the patched MGE (UK version). The caravelle was put to sleep and you could see it was carrying something (or was in a stack). When I clicked on it, I saw the picture of a sleeping marine in the window where unit info normally is (to the right of the map). As I said, don't know if it "worked" only because both units were sleeping, but that's what I saw. Don't know if it's actually a marine on the ship. Carolus |

The caravelle was put to sleep in an ocean square, not in a city.Carolus |

Gee... I hadn't checked this thread in a week thinking that it had died Keep those cheats coming folks. I don't know if there ever will be a list three, but it's still important that people know all the cheats. Thanks for all of your help. I couldn't have done it without you. Keep on Civin' |

Strange. It only worked with that specific caravel. There was another one at sleep right next to it and clicking on it didn't reveal a thing. Don't know if it actually was carrying anything or only was stacked with other ships. Maybe it depends on which unit you put to sleep first, the ship or the unit aboard? Carolus

Matthew posted this in the strategy forum:It takes two luxuries to convert an unhappy citizen to content, and two more to make him happy. So you'd assume it would take six luxuries to convert a very unhappy citizen to happy, but in fact it takes only two. This can result in your cities actually becoming *more* happy as you expand your empire. Not what the designers intended, I believe. |
