Now that we have several threads running, it is impossible for me to read all of them all of the time. I've noticed, here and there, comments directed to me in various threads. So, to make sure I don't miss anything from the Thread Masters or anybody with a question or comment, please post them here and know that I will check this thread very often (especially after June 3 when I come back from a business trip). Here's one for myself: Yin, can you please wait longer to get majority feedback on forum issues before you make changes? Yes. Yes, I most certainly can and will. ------------------ CIV3 DEVELOPMENT LIST COORDINATOR **(un)Officially Making Lists for Firaxis Since SMAC Enhancement 3!** [This message has been edited by yin26 (edited May 22, 1999).] |

Apologies in advance if you've encountered these questions elsewhere. I keep on NOT finding the appropriate thread. Is there a thread to improve the AI's ability? I'm not talking about programming per se, but rather specific actions that strike me as suicidal, such as consistently paying huge amounts of tribute, or declaring war while on virtual life support. Simple changes in both these areas (and there are others) would have a huge effect on human game play. |

Yin, I am relatively new to this forum and I get lost in hundreds of ver1.0 ver1.1 ... threads.Couldnt you put up a word doc to download where everything is summarized (shortly summarized)? This would help a lot to see what is already suggested. Thans for any help, ATa |

There is a summary of everything already suggested in all threads in the summary thread, as well as summaries at the beginning of the thread for each topic. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of suggestions prevents them from being very short. We're doing the best we can to be concise, but some ideas just can't be expressed in twenty words or less.Bell--Temporary List Ombudsman |

How about a discussion of the map itself - cylinder vs flat, resources, features, etc? Maybe as an expansion of the borders topic? |

Has Brian given you a clue on how long timewise Civ3 will extend? If he has we probably need a public statement so we can refocus our minds... (if you have already posted one I have missed it). If he hasn't we need a discussion thread here |

Freddz,I asked him yesterday; nothing yet. I think the project is still too early for him to say, and even if he knows, he might not want to leak out such details so soon. But I'm hoping... |

Umm, it's more of an HTML question, but when I make a link using (href="blah") with < and > in place of the paretheses, how do I put text that will describe the link in it? |

LordStone1,Just go to any post that has the format you are talking about, click the 'edit message' button, and you'll be able to see all the codes and how they make the link. It's the best way to learn, I think. |

Yin:Okay, progress report time. Has the List of Suggestions been sent? I forget how the system works, whether you're sending each list separately to Brian Reynolds or whether you're waiting until each threadmaster sends you the summary and then sending everything simultaneously. If the latter, and if that means the list hasn't yet been sent, who are we waiting on? Last update I got said that Cheats, Movement, Religion, Player Interface and Units had been taken care of. What about Economics, Diplomacy, City Improvements, Social Engineering and Graphics? And then of course the Technology thread has been passed around more times than a bong at a Pink Floyd concert... |

EnochF,I'll send another update in a few hours. Not much has changed since the last update, though. Of course, WONDERS came in. I've heard from most Thread Masters (some will submit today or tomorrow). At any rate, we need to get this finished, and I'll let you know in detail later what has yet to be done. And, yes, I'm waiting to send all of this at once to Brian. So we've got to tie up all the lose ends here and I'll then need to spend some serious hours polishing it up. |

Dear Yin,Are only the summaries being sent or are the threads themselves? If it is only the summaries can the thread masters be sure to give equal attention and length to each suggestion (even one's they do not like). I have noticed a real trend that some ideas are summarized well, while others are just written off (perhaps unintentally). Shouldn't Brian & the team be reading all posts (and the pros & cons) to get the feel and implementation of the idea rather than a one line incomplete summary. One persons "garbage" is sometimes another's treasure. |

Personally, I think that only the summaries should be sent, as not to overwhelm the Firaxis folks... afterall, they know that this forum exists, so if they want to read the whole thread they know where to look. The summaries give condensed reading. |

Bubba,Just the summaries will be put together into a big list (which I'm working on now). But I absolutely share you concerns, of course. All of the Thread Masters made a pledge to be fair and represent all ideas equally. However, they are just human, and sometimes the importance of an idea isn't always clear right away. Add to the fact that they are spending an enormous amount of free time on this project, and some things might slip through. Please help them out where you see things being glossed over. They welcome such help. Also, we'll be posting the list BEFORE we actually send it, so you'll have time to make any last-minute comments about stuff that we missed and/or didn't state fairly enough. Thanks for the reminder. [This message has been edited by yin26 (edited June 17, 1999).] |

Yin, old bean, I seem to be having some problems recently receiving e-mail. The problem seems to be that Microsoft has become rather paranoid about the recent worm virus and has stepped up its firewalls to the point where I've tried and failed to send a simple one-line message to you. Who knows why? Perhaps they're a bit wary of hotmail addresses. In any case, that means that any messages you've been sending the threadmasters recently has not reached me.This morning, for whatever reason, one message got through. It seemed to be a vote of some kind, and my name appeared off and on in the text, but other than that, I couldn't make head or tail of it, and I'm assuming there were past messages I never got that would have made everything clear. In short, help! What the hell is going on? |

1: In the Firaxis forum, only the TM:s can post new topics on the list board. Could that be implemented here at Apolyton?2: Do I have to do something more to my OTHER summary? At this rate of new posts (one during the last week) I won't have to make a new summary until the next month. |

Yin, I know you don't like me but I'm worried that when Firaxis reads these summarized idea's, they may misunderstand what the idea really is, because I see a lot of idea's which needs a lot of explaining, and examples, to explain the idea further. Is there a problem with this do you think? |

Icedan,I can't remember more than three days back, so I like everybody again after three days. You are right that certain ideas will need more explaining, and I'm going to 'invite' Firaxis to either contact the Thread Master/poster directly and/or post for feedback on a specific idea from the list that they would like to see clarified. I REALLY hope they take that approach, but it's too early to tell. However, there was no way to include all the coversations in the list. It's already 100+ pages in summarized form... Alexander's Horse, How about something to drink with that order? Also, I'm trippin now trying to finish this list! [This message has been edited by yin26 (edited June 28, 1999).] |

put your head between your legs and kiss MY ass. if thats sounds rude to you, mebbe you can think about closing someones thread without any explanation. i already know about your stupid rules so don't waste your time with a comments like 'blah blah we have hosts,etc.'. if you checking any threads but yours, mebbe you'll find out that my proposal doesn't fit in any of them. if you ever played civ2 to the end,you should know about population counter bug. that bug really bothers all serious players and i hope it will be fixed in civ2 and if not,i know to whom i have to send my 'respects'. what a **** you doing here at all? you're the one who constantly babbling about 'oh,alpha centauri is much better than civ2'. i've read your posts on ac site. you know when you have right to say that? very day when sold copies of ac surpass sold copies of civ2. and when this day comes,i'll apologize to you. until then...you may open a forum 'suggestion for ac2'. sf |

Ummm...If you know the "rules," why are you so upset? Plus, there is a thread called "OTHER"--your ideas don't fit there, either? Please show me ONE thread where I say SMAC is better than Civ2! I guess you weren't around when I was attacking SMAC for a number of reasons. Sure, I've grown to like the game quite a lot, but it didn't hook me right away like Civ2 did--although I like certain things about it better... Anyway, sorry that our entire organization got in the way of your thread. |

I just came to think of this:Why are there TWO lists - one here at Apolyton, and one at Firaxis? Are there any good reasons not to close down this one and refer to Firaxis? (Except for the Firaxis colour scheme which gives me a headache). ------------------ The best ideas are those that can be improved. Ecce Homo |

Ecce Homo,Well, the list was started here and the product is pretty good, of course we want to improve on it. The list effort on the Firaxis site started when I was invited to do it there as well--of course, I thought Firaxis would actually help the effort. Quite the opposite. They pulled the plug on a fan-led project and left Dan in charge, and he hasn't shown any interest in a long time. Add to the fact that the Apolyton site has a lot more visitors, much better support AND a color scheme that doesn't hurt your eyes , and I think you can see why the best work is being done here. Having said that, if the day ever comes when the Firaxis site has just as many visitors and just as much support for the fans, I'd be happy to try (again) to make an "official" list. But Firaxis' sites are a long way away from being that kind of place. |

2 lists problem:I took the CUSTOMIZATION thread because I saw that it was unclaimed. Then Ecce Homo pointed out it was already going on over at FIRAXIS. I really think this whole 2 forum thing is lame. I have 4 passwords for Civ/SMAC: Apolyton, Firaxis, SMAC, ACOL. If the efforts were segregated, that would be one thing, but if I try to check the Apolyton thread on Technology, I'm told to go to Firaxis. I haven't looked at all the other threads... I want this to be useful to BR, so that he can make a better game. The List was almost 200 pages- now it looks like we're making 2 lists. If BR is going to really read 2 200 page lists when making Civ3, great- but it just seems overkill, not to mention that I've seen redundancies already. At one point we were told that the lists were going to come together: now it looks like that's not going to happen. I don't really mind, per se: I like the effort I've seen here at apolyton, and the Firaxis effort is just silly (he couldn't even merge user/password databases for the 2 forums?) I guess what I'm saying is that I feel that the effort has been forked for no evident purpose. Can't Firaxis just have a link here and let the apolyton folks manage it or something? I'd even be happy to give my 'management' up in favor of one effort. I dunno. I'm just beginning to think that I'm wasting my time. ~mindlace |

Mindlace,I can assure you that Brian and the team are very well aware of the "Apolyton" list and are looking forward to our next effort. If other lists get made on other sites (Sidgames.com has one, for example), that's natural and good for the game. It's Firaxis' duty to sort through it all. However, if you go by site traffic, Apolyton has everybody beat (as far as I know). But the idea has ALWAYS been for the Firaxis site to combine its work with ours here--and that still is the idea. So don't worry. Things are going pretty much as planned, except that Dan has left us all in the dark on the Firaxis site. Yin

As to the issue of one to send off the lists, we should remember that we wanted to send off the previous lists June 26th, and they went out about 3 weeks later. Let's aim to have everything finished by August 8th, Sunday night, and send the things in. While there's still some good things happening in Social Engineering and a few other threads, I know that my thread and several other threads have seriously slowed down- I see no reason not to aim for that date.Besides, if it takes another 3 weeks to prepare everything afterwards again and make sure it's all in, then we'll hit the end of August as planned. | |
