Hey there everybody!

I just reread what I posted in Civ3 General/Suggestions and thought I could post it here as well, cause it would be an interesting unit-recruiting model.

quote:
When they would use the training system, it could be even easier. Cause then you would produce weapons and equip some of your pop with it (like in Colonization). Then you could have the option, to give him special training: he gets special abilities (guerilla, spy, spec-forces) or standard military training: standard soldier. Then you could go deeper and define how long the training period would last: a longer training period would result in a "unit" with a higher starting experience. Then there could be options, if your overall military is a conscriptive one or a normal. Conscriptives armies have the advantage that training a unit costs less gold and the unit has a higher starting experience (best option when on war), but soldiers do not gain as much experience when they stay at home, while the standard army has the advantage that already created soldiers gain experience much faster when staying at home (best option for peace times), but newely created "units" have less experience and it is also a bit more expensive.

A cool idea that's worth thinking about...
I disagree, however that conscripted armies are more effective (highly trained or motivated) than an all-volunteer army. After all, the volunteers WANT to be there, while the conscripts often oppose miltary service or are less fit than their volunteer counterparts. A comparison to the US Army of the 1960-70's and today drives that point home. This was even true in WWII, although most men fought willingly (for any of the countries in the war) since they (rightfully so) thought that the survival of their country was at stake.

This could also depend on wether or not they thought their country was worth fighting for. The early roman armies were made up of conscipts that fought for the glory of rome and fought with more effeciency, vigor, whatever you want to call it that did the later armies of the empire which were pay volunteers, mostly from other countries.
