I have twice downloaded the Civ2 patch 242 (I think that's the name), and when I try to open it with Winzip, the message comes "Cannot find Smedsnet.dll Windows needs this file to run c:\temp\civ2\exe. "Then I loaded Civ2 into another computer and downloaded the same patch. Got the same message. What is going on? Will it be ok if I just don't have this patch? What does it do that needs to be done? Then I did a search for Smedsnet.dll. It is in the Civ2 folder. On both computers. My civ2 CD is the Microprose one. Gives a date of 1996. Anyone got any ideas? sboog |

No immediate suggestions - but if you tell us - What operating system you are running, and
- which version of Civ2 you have at the moment
we may be able to help ...------------------ Scouse Git[1] -- git1@scousers.net "Staring at your screen in horror and disbelief when you open a saved game is one of the fun things of a succession game " - Hueij "The Great Library has been built!" Scouse, I am running Windows 98 on my computer. The other computer I tried was running Windows ME.My CD of Civ 2 just says "Sid Meier's Civilization 2" Microprose Software Inc etc. for IBM compatibles. It is the edition that came out in 1996, I think. It is not Multiplayer or anything. Am I missing a lot by not having this patch? sboog |

Try to unzip the patch straight into your Civ2-folder. |

It is sitting now in a folder called "Patches." Zipped because it wouldn't open. In order to open it in the Civ2 folder, do I "drag and drop" the zipped patch into the Civ2 folder? Then run Winzip?Appreciate your help. By the way, what does this patch do? sboog |

IIRC the 2.42 patch needs to be unzipped directly into the current Civ2 directory with overwrite duplicate files enabled - amongst other things the patch contains a new version of the game file civ2.exe and it must overwrite (and destroy) the existing version. To determine exactly which version of Civ2 you are running open any game and then click on the Game | Game Options menu selection - this will open a window that contains the exact game version in its title bar. Depending upon which version your CD contains - mine is an archaic v1.08 there are a large number of bugs and 'features' that are corrected by the 2.42 patch - it really is a must have. Scouse, I just looked. Mine says 1.07c 3 Apr 96. I guess mine is even older than yours. Will try now to get the patch unzipped in the Civ2 folder. Thanks for your help. sboog |

It worked! And now when I go to Game/Options it says in the title bar "2.42 Custom 08 Oct 96" instead of "1.07c 3 Apr 96"Thanks for helping me install the patch, Scouse. This game is growing on me... sboog |

I have just switched to a PC and my game is 5.2.5 November '98. If I need the patch, where can I find it? |

Berzerker, you can find the patch in the Great Library Index, which is part of the CivII strategy forum. Just about everything you would like to know can be found there, because it was put together by Scouse Gits, who knows where anything and everything about CivII can be found. |
