Ok, I used to Mod Civ 2 and the Multiplayer version all the time. I know how to do it, and have never had a problem with it.

I recently reinstalled it, because I want to do some Mod work for fun. However, if I try to change the edit the Units.gif file, Civ II (this is the Multiplayer version) crashes immediately.

Anyone know what the problem is? Any change at all will kill it.

Did you remember to change the palette to the CIV standards?
