As some specific units seem to behave against the rules of common logic; does anyone know exactely, how the computer performs his combat calculations?

A few examples:

1)Destroyer (4a 4d 6m 3h 1f) vs. submarine(10a 2d 3m 3h 2f) Mostly the sestroyer wins this fight, however mathematically it should only win 50%, as 4d*3h*1f=12 = 2d*3h*2f. The total offensive of the attacker compared with the total defensive of the defender)

2)Annulus (7a 2d 5m 2h 2f) vs. Hohmann (6a 6d 4m 4h 3f) (Sci-Fi scenario) 7a*2h*2f= 28
and 6d*4h*3f=72, still the annulus easily wins.

3)Can anyone confirm this result??? It is taken from the alien scenario.
Partisans (4a 4d 1m 2h 1f) vs Force Shield (0a 12d 0m 5h 2f) The partisans win about 80% but this is clearly ridiculous!

There are numerous threads on this general topic in the strategy section - several recently. From all of that there is still some disagreement about what the formula really is. Enter those threads at your own risk!

Here is the link ../../Forum3/HTML/001196.html?date=18:57 I went back and read it and now I'm confused again!

Units in the partisan slot get a bonus when attacking 0a units like caravans, engineers, and diplo/spies. Stationary fortifications need at least 1a to keep from getting sabotaged.

Short answers, but really just a direction arrow to the strategy forum where you might get a more complete response.

Good thread, nice formula's, nevertheless...
sometimes units just don't seem to follow any rule at all:

Lalande game (ToT):
Hammer (15a 6d 5m 3h 3f) vs. Urdar (21a 21d 8m 12h 10f)
I tried this ±20 times and the Urdar survived only twice!!??????

No special rules applied (as far as I know)
(strictly this is a bomber vs. a heli).

Same results apply to Hammer vs Adamastor (also a heli).

The Dondash however (ground unit) suffers no penalty when confronted with Hammers.
Any idea's?

The defender might only defend at 1fp. Not sure why I think that might be the case - might be an air unit or Heli thing.

Even that doesn't explain it entirely... hmmmm.

According to the manual, any air to air unit attacking a helicopter receives bonuses ( or rather the defender suffers penalties):
the defenders firepower is reduced to 1 and its defensive strenght is reduced by 50%.

See ToT manual page 88.

So the above result would make sense if the Hammer was an air to air, unfortunately it isn't, so probably it's just another inconsistency in the manual.

Hey, this might actualy work as a strategy in Sci-Fi TOT. Stock up on Hammers in Orbit before researching Quantum Gravitics.....
