Does anyone ever use it? Sometimes they're sure as hell annoying, as their intrests conflict (build caravans vs build embassies vs build barracks) but other times the best way to win is to please them all...

Do you ever use it?

Use, as in help determine strategy or use as in provide comic relief for when the AI is pounding my Civ into little bits of gravel? I almost never use them for the first and very frequently use them for the second.

BTW, any of you in serious need of gravel. I seem to be producing a lot of it lately.

I love them! As comic relief, not from a strategic point of view. Elvis is just so cool!
I can't play without the music, movies, throne room and council. I need it to get attached to my empires, to get that essential Civ feeling. And I need a movie when I complete a wonder, like a puppy that gets a cookie when he's done a trick.

Yeah... the wonder movies were OK the first, second, and third time... But come on, how many times do you really need to see them.

My favorite advisor is the military, especially when you are kicking butt and he just stays drunk...

I don't know about other level/world sizes, but on king/huge world, if I manage to get the financial guy happy pre-modern, I know I have the game in the bag...

...and his response always gives me a chuckle...

Sometimes it's just possible to get the AI in a handbag, and keep the game running for peace and building up your population...you keep pressing 'Enter' until the High Council appears...

Normally however I wipe out my allies with a huge World War (normally 6 vs me) before the 20th century...

Despite being scorned last time this topic came up - I find them very useful or more specifically I find the science advisor to be so -- how else can you determine how you are standing in the science stakes (assuming you have not built Marco's, or found all other civs and established embassies with them - I rarely do the first and never the second at least until spies come along)
When that little man smiles and runs off to polish his abacus I know things are good in the Empire...

I want to strangle that Trade Advisor sometimes. Especially when you're producing units to eliminate all your enemies, and you get told to build caravans!

Am I the only one who has watched them NOT on Civ2? Just open the file from a media player and watch them all! Some are very funny that I've never had in a game...

Sci Advisor (Medieval)- "Sire, the very cobble stones of our streets possess more learning than we do. I all matters sire, WE SUCK!"

Trade Advisor (Modern)- Here's you! Here's a clue! Get a clue! Discover trade!!

Then there the drunk Medieval Military Adivsor.

High council advisors may not be useful, I think we all agree with that, but they are fun.
Wonder movies and advisor movies are not precisely "useful" but they add some spice to the game. I sometimes enjoy and relax watching those guys discussing nonsenses, especially when the game is getting hard.

The city inside view could be vastly improved. It was much better in old civ1. Cities look almost the same no matter the age!

I think that the "High Council" was the very first thing I learned to turn off. Even the entertainment value paled rapidly.

I like the council, but for amusement purposes only. No real useful information can be had from it that you didn't have already from the game itself.

When it pops up at the usual intervals, I'm usually very quick to press the "No, too busy" button, but from time to time I still find it amusing to hear the "experts" at my own convenience.

I generally use them purely for amusement. I have however found a use for the Attitude fellow. He will always let you know if a city is in disorder, even if it doesn't show on F4. I find that useful when the riot factor kicks in after conquering a new city. Yeah, I know. I can set the lux rate and then reset it, but I don't always remember to do that when I conquer more than 1 city in a turn :P Elvis here is kind of a safety check

Other than that, only the early science fellow (SG1's post) seems to have any value other than comic relief

usually listen to the HC, though I amost never heed their advice. The last time my foreign minister told me to exchange techs with other nations, I tried and they all declared war on me at once. Granted I was pretty pathetic at the time. I felt like strangling that pretty neck when a bunch of dragoons came and took my outer cities.

I have to turn it off in FW scens, though. it gets irritatng when you have every tech and that girl is still bugging you to discover writing.

Elvis bores me, but the miltary advisor almost always cracks me up. like the time I had nothing but city garissons, and he said "we stand astride the world like a collossus". What an idiot!

For some reason I can't find the file that has those clips. I have MGE and I've looked through that folder and all the subdirectories several times.

Can anyone tell me what that filename is?

at least for 2.42, they are on the CD in the D:\civ2\video directory (with D being the CD drive)

council0.avi is the ancient council
council1.avi is the renaissanse council
council2.avi is the modern council

each period also has a separate anarchy file as well.
