Check this out! Robert Reed's story "Two Sams", in the most recent issue of Asimov's Science Fiction (May 2000) is all about the joys and costs of terminal Civ addiction (looks to me like he's been playing ToT). Recommended. |

Does it mention Apolyton?I once thought Civ might make a great spooky sci fi, with a plot a little like this: Sid Meier is really an all-powerful alien carrying out experiments on mankind. One copy of civ2 is linked to reality altering devices so that, all unknowing, history is actually changed, only the player doesn't realize it until he starts nuclear war for fun... |

No, Reed did not name-check Apolyton. Shame on him!His story deals in some ways with overlaps between Civ and reality - but I'd hate to think a divine Sid Meier had set up a direct connection between the two! Good thing I prefer fantasy/SF scenarios; in case that's true, mostly non-humans will have suffered at my hands... |

I actually read that short story in Asimov Science Fiction and it is quite strange. It portrays a man obsessed with a game of civ2 that takes his entire lifetime. ------------------ -GeoDan |

Nope. He lost. And since the Civ2 game was paralelling his life, his life ended in a failure as well.------------------ -GeoDan |

www.asimovs.com It doesn't have the text of the story, however, as far as I can tell. Some libraries may carry Asimov's and have back issues. |
