Welp? Has anyone played COLONIZATION, a lost game that was the only strat game produced by Microprose that was superior to the Civ series?I mean, everyone remembers Dr. No, but no one remembers From Russia with Love, which is superior to Dr. No. So I am not surprised people don't remember Colonization. For those of you that do not know what it is, it was a game in which you played on of the four major European powers, and you settled the New World. There you'd encounter the three other colonies, which you could make war with if you pleased. There were Indian tribes, some of which were worthless and some of which, if you destroyed their village, you got a nice, tidy sum of gold. And there was the tireless micromanagement, for you'd mine furs or tobacco, then you could sell it as a raw product, or you could improve into something like coats or cigars. Muskets were the hardest, cause you have to upgrade them from tools, which came from ore. Once you had enough Founding Fathers [read: techs], and the populace supported you enough [to do this, you had STATESMEN which worked out of city hall producing LIBERTY BELLS, which counted toward your independance.] you could succeed and become your own country. But beware, for some cities may stay with the king, and soon after you'd have to withstand the European armies attacking you cities. If you produced enough more liberty bells, you could get assistance from a foreign power. When you had destroyed all the King's forces, you had won. After that when you played you were referred to as some nation, and once a nation was created, they treated colonies like dirt. [The USA was the worst, at least in the game.] ------------------ "Beggars should not be choosers." "Terror is the candy of devils." "If it was to be, then get over it. War, shouldn't that have been Elol? Sarge, it's a good game, but better than Civ - I think not - it doesn't have the replayability - and in the latter stages it really drags (IMO of course). However, as a dedicated gamer - if it works for you, enjoy! ------------------ ____________ Scouse Git[1] "CARTAGO DELENDA EST" - Cato the Censor |

Naval combat was certainly more interesting but there was less exciting ground combat. And if Founding Fathers were techs, than there are far less. I would compare them with WoWs. Of course, that means there are NO techs in Colonization. It was a good game but a with a more limited timescape. |

I played it a couple times long ago, and found it lacking somehow. I was really captured by it for a while, then it began to seem like too much work. I think it was the lack of progress - in Civ, I really look forward to developing new techs and being able to build new and better units and improvements. |

I was playing Colonisation at 4 am this morning. Sid's 3rd best game, behind Civ II and Civ. It's a reat game, but it can become a little dull mid game, but does provide very good micro/macro management (with out traderoutes, it would ba a nightmare) All in all it has aged very well, and as I'm still playing it now, 6 years after it's launch, it must have something....------------------ Seagoon: "A navy, milord, is an army, entirely surrounded by water!" -The Flea- [The Goon Show] |

IMO, "Conquest of the New World Deluxe" is a far, far superior game than Colonization. In fact, CNW is a close second to CivII for my favorite and best strategy game of all time. Much of what I learned playing CNW I applied to CivII. Why Colonization still gets press and CNW does not, is beyond me. |

Hey War, if the copy you got was free (I'd assume so), would it be too much to ask for you to email me it?See, when I first bought it, the game didn't work, so I took it back and got my $50 back. But once I had my money, the program worked. I have, since, deleted in and need a copy. If you can, thanks. If you can't, that's fine. |

Colonization was the Bomb! (translation: it was really really good). My 3 favorite parts were: 1. Getting a "specialist" citizen back in Europe and bringing him to help build the New World. 2. Pirating the ocean and stealing some of my opponent's hard earned goods! 3. Setting up a mission at the native village and getting a convert. |

War: Check out http://www.interplay.com/conquest The game is only a few years old, so you can find it on-line. It has great 3D graphics, BUT the best part is its combat portion. It is perhaps the most clever combat model ever designed for a turn-based game. It is a great exploration, explotation, resource-building and of course, warfare type game. Plus, I just found out that CNW II is coming soon. Please get it and play it, if you can. And, it has MP |

I think we need a game about the spread of religion threw peace and war. I think that would be interesting. The versions would be: Christian Muslim Jewish [although no one would buy it once they read the history of Jewish militantism to spread judiasm] Okay, mean joke, but serious the Jews never made war to spread their religion like the Christians and Muslims did. |

I've been trying to get my hands on Civ 1 and Colonization forever. It seems like there are no copies around in the usual computer stores like EB anymore( not surprising, considering how long it has been since they were released)I've heard of sightings at the bargain bin in CompUSA, but not anywhere near me apparently. If anyone can help me get them... by any means, but preferably free of course , it would be much appreciated. |

Col is, just like Civ2, a Brian Reynolds game, not a Sid Meier game. BTW: Brian Reynolds has left Firaxis and is now NOT on the Civ3 project. Check out http://www.firaxis.com/civ3/ Col has some features that makes it unique from other 4x games: 1) A fun trade model 2) Need for specialization of cities 3) Evolution of game challenge (terrain/city improvements -> indian wars -> european wars -> war of independence) And while the exploration phase is superb, the late-game stinks. Mostly because of the two major bugs: Broken random generator for combat and no automotic unloading of boycotted goods from your internal trade routes. C.

I have played Colonization, and I found it fun for the first game. After that, it is somewhat repetitive and not very interesting. I would say that it does not excel in replayability. It did have some cool stuff, like the trading which accurately represents more or less a trading economy of those eras. |

What is needed is the trade and specialization features of Colonization with the progressive elements of Civ. Scrap the founding fathers idea [this is Col's version of techs, and the Founding fathers include the likes of Chris Columbus and Cortez, so FF is a vague term at best], and make a Civ game with Col micromanagement and city specialization. This'd make enormously long games, but ones very involving, so involving one could tolerate playing against the computer. |

Colonization is a great game until the war of independence starts, then the combat system becomes tedious. But I still play it. The early game, when I'm developing, is the best part. Putting the best features of Civ II with Colonization's best features is a good idea. |

SG Thanks...I got it and it works perfectly (after I cleaned enough conventional memory for it...ahh dos )Steve Clark I downloaded the demo and it is great! Combat is useles, civ model is better, but the 3d terrain! man they should take a look at this in firaxis... |

Vet: Glad you liked the demo, but am wondering as to why you said combat was useless and civ2 was better? IMO, the combat in CNW is the best part of the game - civ2 has no combat to play out. Maybe it was just the demo, since I don't do demos, they may have left that part out? |

Hmmm...okay "useless" was the wrong word. The combat exists in demo and I gave it some testing. Problem is AI is very strong , and the rules are somewhat "unclear". For example, they say that flanking attacks and combined forces attacks are more effective then ordinary frontal ones. But in my short (I played 2 days) expirience, the random element is too high. It is so big that it denies the advantages you get tacticizing. Sometimes one soldier can miss three or four times in a row, and sometimes he hits two others with one shot! Probably these extremes "even" when you play more. I didnt think the combat conecept itself was bad, just that it would be useless in a civ game. Especially since civ combat engages great distances (artillery), close combat (warriors vs horses) and arial and naval fight, so this "chess board" system seemes to me isnt enough abstract. Game has many strongpoints, of which I like graphics best. I am sure we will have 3d terrain in civ3 and I hope it is going to be something like this. |

Vet: Fair enough. I can tell you that the combat modifiers are not that random. Each units (or combined units) have a rating from 1 to 6 as well as hit points (indicated by the asterisks after a battle round). This is just like CivII with its A/D/Hit/Fire and the green/yellow/red status bars. No difference. I have fought over 1000 battles in CNW and have won about 90% of them. All it takes is very strong units (just like in CivII, I don't fight offensively unless I have superior units). When I fight, I fire from 4-6 units at once, especially from the front and flanks. A typical battle round would be drawn like this:Cav Cav....X X X ..........Cav Cav ..........Art Art All firing at the same at enemy units X. Anyway, I probably bored you and everyone else about this. Let's just say that of TBS games, this is my favorite combat model. And like I mentioned at first, it wouldn't work for CivIII because it would take too long. [This message has been edited by Steve Clark (edited February 21, 2000).] |

The original comment noted that microprose didnt make a game as fun as civ2, what about masters of orionII, moo2? This game is like civ2 starting in the future, techs are researched, instead of cities, you develop planets. All the combat involves spaceships shooting it out, and you have about 25 different race characteristics to choose from. Any avid game players would love this game, and also it is great to play against a friend on a modem or internet connection(HEAT.net) supports it. |
